Inequality between men and women still exists in a male-dominated world. Women are considered to be below men because they do not receive a literacy education like men do. Just like in past cultures, “women are inferior and unworthy or incapable of learning,” according to Nystrom. Following the Chinese customs are very important to women since it allows them to be successful in this society. Being a suitable young woman for their husbands meant they would not dishonor their family. However, this was very challenging for the women back then. Unlike many other women during the Han Dynasty, Pan Chao had received a literacy education and became an important scholar. Pan Chao assumes her daughters know they must follow all the rules and be a proper lady in front of others. Humility is the first lesson Pan wants to teach all women in China. Three days after a girl is born, the family must follow a couple of customs. Placing the baby girl below the bed is the first custom. This shows women are below men. Women are also too fragile and ordinary to be placed anywhere else. This chapter also explains that in order to succeed in the society, they must put others before themselves by being modest and never mentioning anything good she does, unlike men. The second custom women must follow is “giving [the baby girl] a potsherd with which to play.” A potsherd is a broken piece of clay, which implies a woman’s primary duty is doing all the jobs inside the house every day without complaining. Finally, the third custom deals with ancestral worship. A woman’s main job is serving her husband and giving offerings to the ancestors. She must provide food and wine to the ancestors as the offerings. Shame would otherwise be brought to the family, if the wife does not practice all three customs.
