Human Services Specialists

In the field of social work, there are many jobs that someone could choose from. There are some many different things that someone could do. Some include, licensed social worker, school counselor, mental health, juvenile counselors, human service specialist, marriage and family therapist, and an adoption social worker. The list goes on and on. Mental health counseling and Human service specialist are two jobs in the social work field that are very similar in motivates, but can have very different job description. Mental health counselors’ job is an ever growing one. There will always be patients out there with a mental illness. “The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (2010-2011) occupational outlook for counselors continues to be very strong, with a growth rate estimate of 24% for mental health counselors…” (Shannon Hodges). A mental health counselor’s job is to help a patient get through and help manage their mental illness. Examples of some mental illnesses

Early childhood care, counseling and mental health, family and community, personal care, and consumer services (Human Service Career). A human service specialist job is more geared to child and family case managers at social service agencies (What is the Difference). This is where a slight difference may come in between a mental health worker and human service specialist. Mental health one could work with young kids to the elderly. Granted with human service specialist your work is more centered around the families and who all that interacts with that family. The mother, the father, children, and so on. “Given the significant role human services plays in social service delivery, these perspectives are critical in defining the future of social innovation” ( Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes ). Helping kids while they are young is very important so that they would not continue on the same cycle during their adulthood. All of this is very important when it comes to family
