In order to understand the importance of our role as Human Resources Sergeants in today’s Army, we must understand the ethic and professionalism involved, if we expect the American people to see the Army as a profession. Motivation, commitment, and perfecting our profession are key factors that will ultimately determine a Human Resources Sergeant’s overall professional success. There are several levels to our culture that shape us. Artifacts are common throughout the Army. We see them on our uniforms, in pictures, on our flags, and in ceremonies. These are important to our history and story of who we are. We have a better understanding and appreciation of these artifacts than the American people. The beliefs, values, and ethics that Soldiers carry, have a huge impact on the current Army professional culture as well. Moral values that are instilled within us demonstrate an important role as the Army strives to protect the interest of the American people. We as Soldiers adhere and live by our warrior ethos. Within the warrior ethos, there are four statements that exemplify the strength that we as Soldiers endure during all aspects of our service. These include: I will always place the mission first; I will never leave a fallen comrade; I will never quit; I will never accept defeat. It’s important for us to remember how and why we fight. In conclusion, the experience is the kind of professionalism and pride that make soldiers respected the world over. It’s the experience that singles one out as someone with unique ability and unique qualities. The country depends on the military to fulfill the important mission to protect democracy and keep peace. Excelling as an individual and achieving impossible thoughts are motivating reasons to become a part of the Guard. It’s a way to help reach educational or career goals that are set in life. From family to squad members, communication acts as the cornerstone for a military officer, assisting in the mental health of the individual as well as facilitating the conduction of successful operations by an intricate, yet responsive, organization. The United States Army, in its current state, is a profession of arms. In order to be considered a profession, the organization must have an ethical code rooted in values, strong trust with its clients, and be comprised of experts within the trade. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture.
The Army requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. From the moment a soldier transitions from the civilian sector into the Army, he is indoctrinated with training. Regardless of rank, the Army demands each soldier to be technically proficient and mentally competent in order to be qualified in a respective Military Occupation Specialty. As a soldier progresses in his military career, he is required to continue his education and training. Army leaders are expected and required to continue developing their skills through academic studies, operational experience, and institutional training. Therefore, the Soldiers have to be experts who have assumed the character and identity of the profession; professionalism in Soldiers enables them to perform their duties with lots of motivation and inspiration. For example, 42A - The Human Resources (HR) Sergeant supervises, performs personnel and administrative functions in support of company, battery, and troop; detachments at division, corps, and echelons above corps must master their skill level in an effort to be a subject matter expert in their profession. The functions of Human Resource support four fundamental competencies: Man the Force (ex. Strength reporting), Provide HR Services (ex. Postal operations), Coordinate Personnel Support (ex. Morale, welfare, and Recreation), and Conduct HR Planning and Operations (ex. Planning and operations) in which a HR personnel must accomplish to support the mission. As a result, a professional Soldier should meet very high standards of a profession, for example character, competence, expertise and morality to fulfil their HR role. Young soldiers need to learn to live the Army values, which are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. If these values can be instilled in us then we will have everything we need to make an excellent soldier but also a great person. These values also come into play when you are sent downrange because you want to have good fellow soldiers who will always have your back know matter what the situation you find yourself in. The army values also define our character traits as a person and they teach us discipline. The Army Values are a big part of our lives us young soldiers need to learn how to maintain them.
The Human Resources Sergeant (HR Sergeant) in the profession has the responsibility to balance the role of the profession’s Human Resources Leaders and the Army professional culture. The HR Sergeant in the Professional Arms has the role of supporting the Army culture. The HR Sergeant also ensures that a balance in the leadership role is attained. All these are for the purpose of achieving one common goal of the military in defending the U.S Society.
In June 2013 Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1 (ADRP1) “The Army Profession” was released and the website http://cape.army.mil was created. In (ADRP1), it states there are five essential characteristics of the Army Profession, trust, military expertise, honorable service, Esprit de Corps, and stewardship (ADRP1, 2013). Those characteristics is what I think separates a Soldier from a civilian. No one should think that their job or occupation is harder or more important than someone else’s. It takes all kinds of professions to make this country work but the Army could not be as successful as it is today without our professionals teaching, coaching, mentoring and preserving these five characteristics.
The core values are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. The Army’s definition respect is, “Treat people as they should be treated. In the Soldier’s Code, we pledge to “treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.” Respect is what allows us to appreciate the best in other people. Respect is trusting that all people have done their jobs and fulfilled their duty. Professionals in the United States Marine Corps stand apart from others engaged in particular careers in the civilian world.While many vocations contain some of the characteristics of professional, a lot of careers do not include all of the elements necessary to distinguish themselves as being as close to a professional as a marine. Professionalism grows depending on the time and service they have in the Marine Corps. A professional has specialized knowledge and skill which can only be acquired through prolonged education and experience. Such skill and experience form the basis of objective standards of professional competence that separate the practicing professional from their peers and measure the competence of such professional. This professional knowledge must also be intellectual in nature.
To begin, ADRP 1 states the individual ethic begins by creating, and sustaining a professional identity as a member of the Army team, which in turn, enhances the moral fiber of the entire enterprise. Next, the Army Ethic White Paper reminds its Soldiers that as Army professionals they perform their duty according to a common ethic , eluding to the deontological precepts of this philosophy. Moreover, the white paper states, that as the Army prepares to operate in complex environments, it must anticipate the unique ethical challenges of the future, and remain committed to developing Army professionals of character, competence, and commitment. Next in importance, the joint nature of future conflict requires a common framework for ethical conduct, just as joint doctrine provides for operations and planning. Due to the exceptional importance of understanding this concept, the Army Ethic illustrates the following:
