Human Diversity includes differences related to age, class, gender, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, marital status, family structure, race, national origin, religion, and sexual orientation. Understanding differences and social injustices is very important in the field of social work because individuals that are a part of certain groups have distinctive needs. Some differences can separate people from some resources and other opportunities to meet their needs. Social workers also have to understand that people are complex and belong to multiple, overlapping, diverse groups. In generalist I learned that many factors should be considered when working with clients. I learned that the types of goals and the means to achieve them should consider issues of diversity. As a worker I should also consider the diversity factor in the community. I also learned that diversity competency does not only refer to race and ethnicity but includes differences related to age, immigration status, class, political ideology, culture, disability, religion, sexual orientation, and many other things. I remember watching a video about how bad the trash is in Jamaica. A place that people love to travel, but don’t know much about. It was sad to see how young children and families have to live in such horrible conditions. I was also able to develop self-awareness so I could ensure that I do not force any personal values or biases on clients. I also learned more about different cultures.
