“Glory Road”, based on a true story, relates about a first mixed black and white college basketball term to the NCAA national championship. The story is not flamboyant or exciting, but the movie does accomplish to present what it is about the lead character that’s so stimulating and compelling. I am a big fan of basketball, and this film touched me on so many different figures. The one of the central figures in movie is the coach, Don Haskins. He determines to be “color blind” when he have his first chance to coach a basketball team down in the south where there was so much discrimination and prejudice. Aspects of diversity are in concordance with age, cognitive means, cultural factors, disability and other significant determinants. In partners develop at least two definitions of diversity as it is any mixture of items characterized by differences and similarities. Another one is its reference to differences between individuals or any attributes that may lead to the perceptions that another person is different from self. Diversity is truly confounding, as numerous different ethnic and cultural organizations have afforded to the social, monetary aspects and cultural standards of our society. citizens. Discrimination Individuals have the right to equal treatment and chances, not to experience any form of discrimination or cruelty. There are different types of discriminatory established practices, rules, concepts, beliefs, and laws happen in several countries and societies in any part of the world. There exist Equal Opportunity Act 2010 against to deal, or intend to treat, someone unfairly because of a particular or personal characteristic defended by law in sport. It is an act that shelters people from discrimination. Under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 sport concerns with playing, mentoring, umpiring, mediating and manging sporting evens. Discrimination must be explained and defined so that it will be inferred dealt with appropriately.In Glory Road, it shows that there are no black player in basketball team until the 1960s because of the racial discrimination. With the coach Haskin’s trust and help, the black players fought against with white people’s discrimination. Prejudice Prejudice is a something without substantiation and usually negative feelings toward members of a group. General features of prejudice involve unfavorable emotions, stereotyped principles, and to discriminate against individuals of the group. The same it is with discrimination, Prejudice must be thoroughly explained and defined so that precautionary measures will be made to deal with it accordingly. I felt so upset to see people are cruel to others just because of the color of skin.

In sports, there is no shortage of black success stories. Meanwhile, two black men of prominence in Odessa (who are not athletes) fell from grace. Willie Hammond Jr. (the first black city councilor and county commissioner) and Laurence Hurd (a minister and desegregation supporter) were glimmers of hope for the black community that were both snuffed out. Hammond was arrested on charges of arson conspiracy and perjury and Hurd is in prison for burglary and robbery, leaving a hole in the morale of the black community that was not repaired. These losses, combined the with negative news of black people circulated via media, made the possibility of succeeding in a white man’s world inconceivable. Yet, there is no shortage of black success stories in sports, like Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson; in every area that is not a “rich man’s sport”, black athletes dominate. To the poor children on the Southside, there is something very alluring about the “Cinderella stories” of men from poor black neighborhoods rising to prominence through sports. Based on these examples, there seem to only be two paths for a black teen to take: criminal or athlete. Many of these teens aspire to be sports stars and depend on nothing else because there is nothing else. Every individual in society and in a community is unique in their own ways, and their diversity shows up in many ways. Some of these ways include: religion, race, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, and so on. Everyone’s backgrounds are different, and this is what creates diversity in people. Even though everyone might not be the same, only by uniting everyone can we create the big picture. It’s like a puzzle—even though people are different, we can come together to create a big picture that couldn’t be created by puzzle pieces of the same shape. To me, diversity symbolizes the unique backgrounds that we come from. Every individual in their communities and in their society are influenced by their background—and this can come from various reasons. If someone comes from a different socioeconomic background, or lifestyle, their thought processes and their view of life might be much more different than mine. Their reaction to a certain situation can be much more different than mine, and it is important for me to see all these viewpoints in order to be a more informed member of my community. Defending Titles Diversely: A Persuasive Essay about the Lack of Diversity in Sports Many Americans have seen or at least heard of the movie “Remember the Titans.” The classic film focuses on a school that blends black and whites and takes on an African American head coach. The coach knows the importance of winning, but also knows the team must work together to get those wins and have respect for every single person in the locker room. Although coach Boone was still put in a tough situation with the school board and the community, he was able to lead his team, with the help of a white assistant coach, to an undefeated season. The Civil Rights Era impacted the realm of sports in a great and powerful way. Throughout the mid 1900s, many minority athletes emerged through all odds and began to integrate themselves in the white dominated athletic business. These athletes endured constant hardships in order to achieve their goals and dreams; facing much racism, segregation, and violence. Minorities across the country began to look up to these sportsmen and realized that anybody could attain greatness despite the social troubles of the time. Stories depicting the struggles of minority athletes soon arose and grew popular among different cultures. These true accounts passed from generation to generation, each admiring the courage and bravery of athletes and how important they became in obtaining an equal society. Producers and directors soon found a way to revolutionize the film industry by retelling the racial discrimination that minority athletes faced. Remember the Titans, The Perfect Game, 42, and The Express are all examples of how minority athletes overcame racial adversities in order to obtain the championship. These Hollywood movies contain many inaccuracies that draw away from the true impact minority athletes had during the Civil Right Era. Although these films do depict the racial components of the time, they do not depict the accurate occurrences of the stories they try to recreate.
Glory Road is a motivational underdog story about Texas Western’s 1965-1966 Men’s Basketball team. The film emphasizes how serious racism was during the 1960’s, and focuses on the discrimination the team had to go through along the way due to the simple fact that most of the players on the team were black. Coached by Don Haskins, Texas Western was the first team in history to win the NCAA championship with an all-black team on the floor (Ott). When Coach Haskins was hired to take over the program, he realized that the team he was inheriting was a losing team and was full of weak players. Therefore, he focused on recruiting African-American basketball players from the North in order to have a successful season with great basketball skill (Clark). Haskins was also certain that it would be nearly impossible to recruit the talented white players. Initially, Haskins received a substantial amount of criticism for recruiting black players in a sport where white players were the norm. Traditionally, diversity refers to an assortment of races, ethnicities, genders, ages, disabilities and perhaps sexual orientations. A definition of diversity, however, should not be constrained by traditional categories such as these. Such a definition should also include categories such as religion, educational level, life experience, geographic location, socio-economic background, marital status and work experience. Indeed, each person employed by a company possesses unique qualities that encompass many factors.
The scholars expounds that Black athletes were commodities on the playing field to help win games and bring in revenue to their respected schools. However, the schools were just as eager and willing to leave their Black players behind and dishonoring the player as a part of the team. Therefore, not compromising the team’s winning and bring in profits for the school. Sadly, Black athletes at predominately White institutions (PWIs) who believed that they were bettering the live of themselves and their families members by going to college and playing collegiate sports to increase their post secondary careers. However, these athletes were only “show ponies” for their schools. Unfortunately, Black athletes had allegiance to their school; however, the school turned their backs on the athletes to protect the profit and notoriety of the school and the programs. Money and respect from White fans and spectators were more important to the PWIs than standing up for the respect of their Black players. Racial bigotry in sports was rampant and it was only going to get worse.
Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans; by bringing people together who are different, it can create a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual. For the purpose of this paper, I will define what the term Diversity means, and then I will concentrate on the diversity as a result of geographic origin or ethnic diversity. I will look at how ethnic diversity is managed generally and then how my employer, deals with the diverse ethnic groups in its organization and what it needs to improve on.
Culture is about a set of values, beliefs, and norms that affect the behaviors of large groups of people. Whereas, diversity is more than skin color or ethnic heritage. Diversity within a group is about the quality of being different. The differences between values, traits, attitudes, status is what diversity entails. Engleberg and Wynn state that these “characteristics include age, occupation, physical ability, marital status, personality preferences, and much more.” We must remember to avoid stereotyping individuals and learn to accept that diversity in groups is the skillset that individuals bring to the group.
