How the Makers of Shrek Subvert the Usual Conventions of a Fairytale Using Presentational Devices
In this essay I am going to discuss how the makers of Shrek overturned
the expected characteristics of a fairytale. They do this by using
presentational devices such as lighting, music, camera angles and
visual effect. In my opinion if the film did not use these
presentational devices the way they did, it would not be as successful
and people would see it in a totally different way.
The producers of Shrek took conventional well-known fairytale
characters and changed them to make them humorous, for example the
three little pigs were given stereotypical homosexual voices. Other
characters in the film were Tinkerbell, Little Red Riding Hood, The
Three Bears and many more. They also added and changed well known
phrases from fairytale films. For example the Three Little Pigs don't
say, " He huffed and he puffed and blew the house down" they say, "He
huffed and he puffed and signed the eviction notice" When they do this
I think it adds a lot of humourto the film. With the phrases they
don't change they put them into a different context. For example when
Donkey is trying to get out of trouble he says "oh! What big eyes you
have" and so on, which is from Little Red Riding Hood. When Donkey is
complementing Dragon she starts to fall for his charm, and their
relationship grows stronger throughout the film. We see this when
Donkey needs to help Shrek and he whistles for Dragon and she is there
willing to help. Also on the special features at the end of the film
they sing together looking at each other lovingly. I think it is very

see him, instead of hide behind the sofa. The producers used great
camera angles to exaggerate his height. We see this when we first meet
Lord Farquaad and the camera shows us different parts of his body,
using various camera angles such as close-ups, medium shot also medium
close-up. These shots gives the impression that he is very big and
important as he marches down the corridor, but when we find out how
small he actually is it is very funny. In my opinion the producers
chose brilliant shots as this scene has a lot of humour.
In conclusion the presentational devices subvert Shrek from the usual
conventions of a fairytale as they help create the characters. In my
opinion the makers have been triumphant in producing a fairytale with
a twist, as the film has been very successful worldwide.
The Reversal of Traditions in Shrek In traditional fairy tales ogres are man-eating beast. The prince usually rescues the princess; they marry and live happily ever after. How do the makers of 'shrek' use presentational devices to reverse this tradition to reveal the ogre as good and the prince as evil?
Throughout literature, there is a prevalent model found in various narratives that ensures its success. This archetype, called the “journey of the hero,” discovered by Joseph Campbell, serves as a guideline of three stages for authors to manipulate to their own desire. The departure, the initiation, and the return essentially create the same storyline, yet these formats can be molded into unique and refreshing works of art. Aspects of the “journey of the hero” in the movie Shrek 2 are highlighted as the main hero, Shrek, and his wife Princess Fiona depart from their accustomed residence, the swamp, rediscover the meaning of true love through peril, and return with Shrek being able to balance his identity between an ogre and royalty.
In the essay i am going to focus on the characters of Shrek and lord Farrquaad, the fairytale genre is subverted from the usual ogre being a man eater and the prince saving the princess to the ogre becoming the rescuer and the prince being evil person who sends the ogre to do his dirty work and rescue the princess.
A fairy tale story can easily establish rhetoric devices in order to enhance its storyline or give some character development. The movie Shrek is about an ogre named Shrek and a donkey named Donkey who is ordered by a prince named Farquaad to rescue a princess named Fiona so he can get his swamp back, but Shrek ends up falling in love with the princess himself (Adamson, Jenson, 2001). The movie Shrek breaks the norms of a typical fairy tales, reversing the role of who would be the hero and who would be the villain. This film adopts rhetoric devices like the four cognitive schemata to construe the perception of the characters towards Shrek, the Social Penetration Theory to show the growing relationships Shrek has with Donkey and Fiona, and verbal
Film analysis with a critical eye can give the viewer how animation giant Disney uses literary element to relay key messages to the audience. Walt Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” is a perfect example how different literary theories like ‘the Marxist theory’ and ‘Archetypal theory’ can be embedded in the simplest of the fairy tales. The different literary elements in the movie, shows a person how characters like ‘the banker’ and the setting of the houses helps to portray the socio-economic differences in New Orleans at that time. Applying ‘the Marxist theory’ and ‘the Archetypal theory’ to the plot, characters and the setting, shows how movies can be a medium to confront social issues and to prove that all fairy tales are of the same base.

Social Psychology is the scientific study of how we influence, affect, and relate to one another. Social psychology is studied to see how the influence of others can impact how we act. This can be seen in many aspects in life. Most specifically, social psychology can be seen in movies. Recently, I have viewed the movie Shrek which was released in 2001. Shrek is a kid’s movie about an ogre named Shrek who rescues a princess from a castle for Lord Farquaad in order to regain his swamp and privacy. During this process, however, Shrek falls in love with the princess and discovers a secret about her. While watching Shrek, I have noticed that many theories and concepts from social psychology were apparent in the film.
Through his portrayal of characters and unorthodox style of writing throughout the fairy tale, Goldman pokes fun at the literary process and ordinary fairy tales. Through his fairy tale, The Princess Bride, Goldman ridicules numerous tropes of fairy tales and simultaneously critiques overdone expositions. Every character represents an archetype of a common fairy tale, but they all have glaring flaws that directly contradict how they are supposed to act. William Goldman sets forth his satirical theme that the literary industry’s rigid rules reflect its inability to adapt in an ever changing society.
If children or adults think of the great classical fairy tales today, be it Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Cinderella, they will think Walt Disney. Their first and perhaps lasting impression of these tales and others will have emanated from Disney film, book, or artefacts (Zipes 72)

The success of the film has led DreamWorks to create several shorts, companion films, and sequels. From its memorable characters to its whimsical, edgy humor, Shrek was an amazing, highly successful animation that would pave the way for DreamWorks to make billions off the franchise. Shrek’s success can be attributed to three main factors: the range of ages it appeals to, its creative use of intertextuality, and its ability to cover a wide range of the fairy tale functions proposed by Vladimir Propp.
The animated film Shrek is a Dreamworks fairy tale that teaches us to look beyond what we expect to see, by completely subverting the traditional fairy tale concepts of gender, appearance and beauty. The characters in Shrek are vastly different from what we would expect to see in their appearance and behaviour. With unexpected plot twists, the directors of Shrek create important messages and morals that would not usually be conveyed, using techniques such as humour. The techniques have been placed strategically to result in an entertaining and educational film.

In today’s modern age, young children are being raised by their TV screen. Reining from the original tales of Perrault and the Grim Brothers, the Disney princess line has been a staple on the screens since the 1930s (Do Rozario 1). However, these princesses have gone through dramatic changes to remain relevant to todays youth. The effects that can be influenced by the roles expressed in these types of films send mixed messages to the audience, causing them to ask themselves whether or not they should believe what the princess is expressing on the screen.
