This assignment intends to identify how attitudes towards studying children have been evolving over time, whilst also identifying three key principles which should be aspired to when implementing such research. A range of theoretical perspectives and methodologies shall also be explored with examination on children’s roles and their involvement being evident throughout.
Researching children is in no way a new phenomenon however there has been a considerable shift in paradigm which has led to increasing amounts of research being carried out ‘with’ children rather than ‘on’ children (Christensen and James, 2008). This could be because of the growing interest in children’s rights to participate (James and Prout, 1997), which as suggested by O’kane (2008) occurred in the late 1980’s. However it is difficult to determine whether this shift in paradigm occurred as a result of natural changes in researcher’s attitudes or as a direct result of new legislation (2008). As at a similar time, in 1989, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) (UNCRC ) was enforced, giving children the right to participate and be heard in matters affecting their lives. This difficulty is evident by Schaffer (1990) suggesting developmental theories have strongly influenced policies thus indicating, as researcher’s knowledge on children and childhood develop attitudes and policy change. In contrast O’Kane (2008, p.125) states “changes reflect an acknowledgement of children’s rights”.
Views on childhood have and still continue to change (Waller, 2009). The contemporary view that children are empty vessels (Skinner, 1974) is being disregarded as children are no longer perceived as passive recipients in an adult world (O’Kane, 2008...

In conclusion this assignment has identified that attitudes towards studying children have and still continue to change, although it is evident attitudes are still dominated by a western perspective and some changes have been more embraced than others. The findings within this assignment support the view that children now have a participatory role within research, however it also identifies that participation is only possible if the researchers fully embrace children as competent beings and aspires to the key principles of consent, listening and responding to children and adheres to ethical codes of conduct.

Research in any given area can yield many different results despite having the same aim. Varying results of separate studies may be due to different circumstances and conditions that surround them. Both Bigelow and La Gaipa and Corsaro differed in their conclusions (Brownlow, 2012). However, both had a similar aim in as much as they wanted to research how children understood friendship. By contrast, how and whether previous studies influenced them differed. The work of Bigelow and La Gaipa was not rooted in any background or tradition of research. They carried out their work in 1975 and at that time most studies about children had centred on attraction. Therefore, the work that they did was among the first of its kind. In addition to being an original piece of research, it also had validity because subsequent individuals carried out similar work. One of the children (George) created a map, that did not look like a physical representation of the children outdoor area, when his partner asked what he was drawing he explained he was using his imagination. The ‘water represents the big children’s playground, our area is the island, the dotted line is where we have to find the word treasure, that’s hidden under the X!’ George’s partner Pedro looked puzzled and asked me why he was doing it wrong. I explained that George was not doing it wrong, it is his interpretation of his outdoor area, and this is how he imagines it. This allowed me to be reflexive and flexible as a researcher, and to ensure at all times the child’s voice was being heard, and that I was not shaping the research to the outcome I wanted. I also thought this was a lovely example of children’s imagination. The child’s outdoor area can represent a number of things to them as expressed through George map. There are proponents of the debate that childhood is disappearing which will be discussed in this section which include Postman (1983), Elkind (1981) and Palmer (2006). In considering these points of view which are mostly American, one must firstly set in context what is meant by the disappearance or erosion of childhood. This key debate centres on Postman (1983) who wrote “The disappearance of childhood” which is a contentious book about how childhood as a social category which is separate from adulthood is eroding. Abstract In this essay, I intend to explain how everyday lives challenge the construction of childhood as a time of innocence. In the main part of my assignment, I will explain the idea of innocence, which started with Romantic discourse of childhood and how it shaped our view of childhood. I will also look at two contradictory ideas of childhood innocence and guilt in Blake’s poems and extract from Mayhew’s book. Next, I will compare the images of innocence in TV adverts and Barnardo’s posters. After that, I will look at the representation of childhood innocence in sexuality and criminality, and the roles the age and the gender play in portraying children as innocent or guilty. I will include some cross-cultural and contemporary descriptions on the key topics. At the end of my assignment, I will summarize the main points of the arguments.

Adults are obligated to respect children’s rights to participate in research, but in doing so it is imperative that adults are not unintentionally coercing children into participation. Adults and researchers must be aware of the power imbalances that are active during the research process and to do everything they can to equalize these imbalances. Researchers need to give children the tools they need to know that participation is voluntary and that they may withdraw their participation at anytime. Researchers also need to emphasize that there are no wrong answers and children are allowed to express their opinion and answers freely.
