Sexist advertisements have been a part of our society for as long as anyone can remember. They form such a huge and prominent part of our everyday life that we no longer notice how they’re getting more sexual and offensive by the day. In this advertisement, a woman is portrayed in front of a sandwich, posing with her mouth open in anticipation. She has an expression that is clearly illustrating shock at the size of the sandwich. This is because it is showing young adults, specifically, that this is what women are for. It is dehumanizing women and objectifying them as a tool for pleasure. It is also relaying the message that if it is a genius idea that companies are objectifying the female gender, then it is definitely okay for anyone to do so as well. This advertisement is painting the much-hated picture of sexual entitlement in men’s minds. This picture is exactly what leads to the increase in the incidents of rape, as more men are urged to believe that they are entitled to women’s bodies and sexual acts, and that their sexual needs have to be met. On the short-term, however, we believe that it will only increase the company’s sales of this new sandwich, as we discussed earlier in the essay that “Sex Sells”, so all in all, this is generally a successful advertising strategy. The messages broadcasted are only contributing to the downfall of the society over time, that is, there will be social change, but to the worse. Being socially responsible of something means that it contributes to its occurrence and to the formation of a particular idea in the mind of its perpetuators. To reiterate, we believe that this advertisement is socially responsible for all the sexual violence occurring against women and the rise of patriarchal attitudes amongst nations worldwide. This ad is directed at customers as citizens as well as consumers, whether that was intentional or unintentional. This means that people can be classified into either category; as citizens meaning that people would think and rationalize what they retain from adverts as such, without mindlessly being influenced by it. Also, rational citizens would not stand for adverts like this one, and would take a strong action against it by, for example, striking and boycotting this particular product due to it’s offensive content.
