Personal Statement Zeinab Ossaili
Since beginning high school, I've been very interested in chemistry and the environment and when they came into my life that’s when I knew that I wanted to major in that certain field. I want to pursue a degree course that combines all of these. Since engineering runs through my family from the oldest to the youngest, it reinforced my decision even more. In the future I hope to obtain a Masters degree and become employed in research and development in the industry. My mother has been an extraordinary influence in my life. Growing up with such a great role model, I developed her enthusiasm. I not only came to love the excitement of learning something new just for the sake of knowing something

Watching him in his surroundings and how everything worked around him attracted me even more. He also studied here in the UK due to its remarkable universities. As he always says, “You’re following in my footsteps.” Many wonder why I would choose such, as their mentality pushes them to believe it is not something a woman would do in the Arab world. Chemical reactions interest me the most because you may not know why they are occurring and have to break them down piece by piece to get to the core and discover the reasons for a reaction. I want to give back to my community and to make a change improving resources and to save the environment. Chemistry is not my only interest; I developed a passion for fashion design and reading books with thanks to my mother I started at a young age. I also hope to combine chemistry with different fields to discover new innovations for different industries. Sports are also a part of my life as I am a big volleyball and baseball fan. Playing with a team taught me the importance of teammates and working together to achieve a certain goal, which we had set
My current area of interest is in the engineering and the biomedical field. After experiencing the rigorous AP Chemistry course, I was able to find my passion in the field of medicine. Furthermore, I had already developed an interest in engineering from my previous engineering courses and clubs, so a deeper understanding of what I wanted to do was discovered in a chemistry lab. Being involved with the Technology Student Association at our institution, I learned several different skills in a variety of technical fields. This led to my conclusion that I wanted to become a biomedical engineering. This field of engineering incorporates both the medical aspect and technical aspect of what I want to become in the future.
I started my journey of furthering education at Brunswick Community College. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to major in but I knew I wanted to work with children no matter what. I started my college courses for nursing and quickly realized that I needed to do what I loved most, which is teaching young children. I switched my major to Early Childhood Education which was honestly the best decision I have ever made. I finished my degree in about two and a half years and was so happy to graduate. I actually graduated with honors (cum laude) which was a great accomplishment! I was so proud of myself! I had known since my first day in this major that I wanted to continue on after my associate's degree. I knew I was too dedicated to stop there. So I
I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemists are constantly thinking of new ways to produce viable drugs containing different isomers to improve the pharmaceutical sector using mathematical equations. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.
Though many people fail to realize it, chemistry is a subject essential to everyday life, due to the fact that it is the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed. But what we must understand is that everything in the universe is composed of matter, hence chemistry is necessary in learning more about the world and universe that we live in. There are many careers and fields affiliated with chemistry that people pursue to learn more about the composition of the universe, but for now, let us examine the logistics of three of these careers. These three careers involving chemistry are geochemistry, environmental chemistry, and chemical engineering.
The study of Science has always been a part of my life. My mother is a science teacher and took it upon herself to teach a science lesson at every opportunity. She tempted me with chemical reactions and techniques before I even knew there was a word for it. This foundation created an undeniable curiosity in the natural world and an insatiable drive to know “why”; why something happened, why it worked, why it was important. After entering the chemistry program at the University of Louisville I was faced with challenging classes that peaked my interests and offered a challenge that no other class seemed to have. I found that I have a passion for organic chemistry. I can understand inorganic and enjoy biochemistry but it was my second semester
...ations well. I have also participated in the Midlands Business Enterprise challenge, which me along will 5 other student, had won and come second in the national finals. Our business was based on the importance of recycling and how we can improve and promote the issue in public. My team working skills were significantly enhanced, along with my ability to communicate and contribute my ideas to a team of people. Consequently I feel a much more able public speaker and willingly to take part in class debates and various school presentations. Which I feel will be important factors that will give me an advantage while being a chemical engineer. My A level studies have given me the grounding that I need to study chemical engineering and I aspire to have an impact on the environment and ensure sustainability for future generations through the study of chemical engineering.
I was eager to explore these subjects, ready to learn and apply each concept, and I felt as if I knew a great deal about the world and the complex species that inhabits it. I felt that I would eventually be capable of doing what I knew I wanted to do in the world. Even still in my second year of studying chemistry, my Advanced Placement Chemistry class is a place where I continue to unravel the intricate weavings of nature, as I prepare to move forward in my studies and towards making my dream a reality. Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences is where I take the first steps, as it offers the courses I need to take and at the highest levels of proficiency. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology provides the firm curriculum that I need to pursue a career in medicine, and that also gives its students room to explore electives and look after other interests, as well as carry out research.
I am currently taking Maths, Chemistry and Biology to Advanced Higher, all of which are challenging and stimulating subjects. They have all influenced me in different ways and were integral in my decision to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering. They have also helped me obtain a foundation of core skills and extended knowledge to hopefully prepare me undertaking my desired degree. There is no doubt that Maths and chemistry have helped fine tune and advance my problem solving skills and think in a more logical manner, all of which I believe to be essential for this degree.
I began to get fascinated by our capitalist world’s economy at a very early age of my life. Growing up, I was incredibly curious to unravel how systems function, and this curiosity developed into a burning desire to learn how processes and organizations operate and run our world. As I started my first job, I realized how much I needed to be better acquainted with the science of money making and the scientific approaches to money management. Later on in my life, being within a company system, I wanted to see the big picture by learning where such a company stands in the midst of all other business interactions locally and internationally. Being involved in the company’s practices I started analyzing the methods used by my managers, the causes and consequences of their managerial choices.
There have been a vast number of lives that have touched mine. Many different people have shared a piece of their soul in my formation. However, it is my mother who is the most important and most influential person in my life. My mother raised me by herself since the day I was born. My father was abusive and she left to make a better life for the both of us. She has worked as many as four jobs at one time. My mother wants to make sure my brothers and I have a better life than she did. It hasn’t always been easy for her, taking care of us on her own, trying to pay bills and making sure we had everything we needed. My mom has always had us involved in sports at a very young age. We always were doing something or involved in something growing up. We went to summer school all through elementary school because she wanted us to get a head start. I remember when we were little she enrolled us I a manners and more class and I can recall when we would go out to eat people would compliment us on how well behaved we were.
The one person who has influenced my life significantly is my mother. My mom is a person that I look up to every day. She is a loving, compassionate, and strong Christian woman. She is my definition of a mother. Ever since I was a child, I saw her as the kind of woman that I wanted to be when I am an adult.
When I joined the engineering program at Texas A&M I knew that I wanted to become an engineer for sure, but I didn’t know what type of engineer I would become. In high-school, I had heard about the typical types of engineers. Electrical, Mechanical, and Petroleum; all great majors and all with great salaries. So during my first semester I did some extremely basic research and came to a rapid conclusion that chemical engineers were paid the most and that chemistry was interesting enough to major in. After my first year in the program and after my first real chemistry classes I realized that if I majored in chemical engineering I would be miserable for the next 4 years. I was back to square one and had no clue to what type of engineer id want to be.
My father, being a chemical engineer, inspired in me an innate desire to be a chemical engineer myself. I appeared for the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) and was placed in the top 1% of the 1,100,000 students who had taken the exam. I chose Chemical Engineering as my undergraduate major at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur which provided me the opportunity to explore the breadth of chemical engineering. While the core courses provided the fundamentals of the field, the electives that I chose helped me gain an insight into the various facets of chemical engineering.
Everyone has had accomplishments in their life, and behind those accomplishments is someone who has had an impact on their life. My mother is my greatest influence for several reasons. She supports me, and the decisions I make, showed me that success comes from hard work, she inspires me and taught me to always believe in myself.
Hmmm.........What shall I tell you about me? You, the person who will decide my fate, my fate as to whether I would go to CU-Boulder, go live in Colorado, go snowboarding in the mountains, meet lots of interesting people, and have the most wonderful experience...I better make myself sound worthy. First off, I want you to know that I'm an unparalleled individual, whose outlook on life is of total optimism. Through out my 18 years, I've become freinds with people from all walks of life. I've learned to empathize with just about every one of them, gaining the greatest understanding in a variety of remarkable characters. One of my favorite, a homeless lady who's called Polly, tells the most incredible stories of love and the many men she has encountered in her 54 years of life. She lives under a bridge and panhandles for a living, yet she appears so happy and dandy, and she can put a smile on my face any day. She's the kind of person who makes me appreciate all the little things people like myself normally take for granted. I come from a family in which the parents struggled starting fresh at 30 years old in a new world, America. They came here in refuge from a country whose leader had forsaken his people, leaving them in a four year long nightmare in which over two million people were done to death. That country is Cambodia. The parents came to America, after having survived such evil and cruelty, not knowing a word of English, yet they persevered with desire of better lives for their two daughters.
