When a gymnast is sexually harassed or abused by someone else, then he or she might be too scared to come out and tell someone, due to fear that it will ruin the person or gym’s reputation (Rosen). Not only would the gymnast fear that it may ruin the reputation of the gym or coach, but the gym owners themselves might not tell USAG due to fear that its club may be kicked out. Also, a parent or victim might not tell a person because they have put so much work into the sport that he or she does not want to miss a practice or competition. According to author, Ben Rosen,“What if the reports aren’t true? It would be unthinkable to ruin this great man’s reputation. Oh, and by the way, he might not let my daughter/gymnast compete in the next big meet
Gabby Douglas was the first African-American female gymnast in Olympic history to become the individual All-Around champion. In the 2012 Olympic Games, she won gold in the team competition and the individual competition. She is a gymnastics phenom. From the beginning of her career to where she is today, she has been a true trooper through everything. Gabrielle Douglas is an inspiration to me and many others because she overcame being homeless, moved in with a new family, and won Olympic gold in gymnastics.
Also they may think that the police won't take them seriously or if the case. goes to court, they might want to avoid humiliation. It might also be a private matter and people might not want to involve the police, such as sexual abuse within the family. In such incidents as this, the victim and the family won't want to publicise the matter. so that everyone is aware of it.
Also being abused and letting someone know maybe embarrassing. In the article “Child Abuse.” Opposing Viewpoint Online Collection, it goes on to say, “Even people who are reasonably confident that they have witnessed child abuse may be reluctant to report it. Some may not want to become involved in what they consider a private family matter. Others may believe that reporting the problem will do no good.”
As an athletic trainer my job and duty is to protect and treat the athletes. Make sure they are safe to play in the games preventing injury and if injury occurs to help them heal and keep back to the sport. If an athlete came and told me and said that, we would sit down together and talk about all the consequences that can occur from what he did in the past and how it can and will affect him now. Just because it was in the past doesn’t mean there aren’t still consequences. In this instance I can see two decisions, tell the coach or not tell the coach. If I tell the coach it could cost them the chance of winning state and the...
I realized I was a victim of bullying. Bullying is defined as, intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that is marked by an imbalance of power. They helped me understand that my coaches’ actions were unacceptable and plain wrong. My parents requested a meeting with the principle and the superintendent of schools to lay out their concerns. This experience with a bullying coach has encouraged me to bring awareness that bullying is a growing problem in sport and performance settings.
The article, Majority of COC staff exposed to Marcel Aubut harassment, discusses the experienced or saw sexual and personal harassment of COC staff members by Marcel Aubut, the former Canadian Olympic president. Both the experience and witness occurred within and outside the company’s doors, as well as among non-COC members while Aubut acted as a representative for the company. The Olympic Committee’s management was aware of these inhuman acts since 2008 but failed to be responsive. The company received many complaints from employees as well as other organization like VANOC about Aubut, but the company ignored the matters. Along with an apology for tardiness, COC’s president, Tricia Smith, promised to implement eight recommendations to allow
The level of hurt that can come from ignoring a sexual assault and that it actually happened can affect someone negatively. It can even get them to thinking bad about themselves and it can turn to the worse fast. There were many flaw’s/fallacies that were committed pertaining to these sexual assaults on campus.
Sexual assault is an under-reported crime. It is difficult for women to report sexual abuse but it is far more difficult for men. For males, it is exponentially more difficult to report such crimes, thus making it more difficult for victim advocates to present an environment where victims feel comfortable coming forward to report sex crimes. To this end, according to RAINN (2009) male victims of sex related crimes may find it easier to make a first report anonymously, giving them the opportunity to speak to an objective list, specifically trained to address specific and complex emotional issues related to this crime.
The statistics clearly show a group of people who’re affected by the heinous acts of sexual assault. Everyone knows that sexual assault isn’t a topic that’s on the top of the list to talk about; people usually even try to go as far as to hide it or to cover it up. Though, it’s clear for certain; covering something up doesn’t make it alright – It won’t make it go away and the problem is still there. For that exact fact, it is the very reason that sexual assault is something that needs to be brought to the
Studies show that women whose attacker is not a stranger are not likely to report the rape because of her emotional beliefs. Women also think that because they know who their attacker is, that it is their fault they were raped or assaulted, or they believe that no one would believe them. Men with high positions or who are in the public eye, such as police officers, politicians, basketball, football, and baseball players are often accused of sexually assaulting or raping a female but most women won’t report it because of their popularity, fame or they are paid off before anyone can find out. For Example, Kobe Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old, Vail-area resort employee. The victim reported the crime, but after 14 months dropped all charges. The charges were dropped because of lack of evidence and because she was offered a settlement that she took when she realized that she was not going to win her case. Statements like that detour woman who has been a victim from reporting it. When a rape is reported and it goes to trial the attorney may discourage the victim from bringing up any and all of the victim 's past sexual experiences to make the victim look bad and convince the victim that it was her fault that this act
Sexual assault needs to be taken seriously and shouldn’t be tossed aside or placed under the rug. When it comes to sexual assault a stand needs to be made. People tend to think the way girls dress and act they are asking for sexual assault and well that is just beyond wrong! There is something called a slut walk and everyone should participate in it. A slut walk is, “A kind of protest march against rape culture, generally led by young women who dress in revealing clothing” (Slutwalk Dictionary Definition). Goodwin college is one of the colleges in Connecticut to hold a slut walk and have girls take a stand and show people that no one asks for a sexual assault to happen so why it is happen and it needs to be stopped and addressed. Take a chance because no one ever knows who can be attacked, it can be someone you know, yourself, your daughter, anyone close to you or just a helpless person. No matter who it is it is still something very scary and something that shouldn’t be
There are many forms of physical abuse, such as, slapping, hitting, strangling, beating, kicking and sexual abuse. In many cases objects being thrown at a child that can injure them. Many times, physical abuse goes undiscovered because children tend to hurt themselves all the time anyway. According to the book, Violence the Enduring Problem states, “Many child victims are fearful or incapable of reporting their victimization to an authority figure. And Despite the mandatory reporting laws in place in all states, evidence of abuse and neglect can often remain hidden except for extreme cases, such as when broken bones and concussions require medical care” (170). Also, physical abuse is often explained away by adults as accidents. But according to Childhelp.org states, “A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. That in 2014, state agencies found an estimated 702,000 victims of physical child abuse” (Child Help). It is an epidemic that has plagued the United States for decades. Child abuse is an ever-growing social problem. Children that are physically abused have a high propensity to develop psychological disorders, such as, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. There is evidence about the mental health implications of physical abuse and environmental stressors that contribute to the ongoing
Women have faced a lot in our society today. They are a vulnerable population that are faced with many challenges. Women have been victims of injustice in our society for many years. Children get abused physically. They are hit, torchured, and burned. And the parent or guardian keep this a secret because the child is too scared to tell anyone because he or she thinks they’ll be more abused. Children are treated unfairly when they are abused. As a result the children end up getting beaten for reason that weren’t such a big deal.
Americans take pride in their sporting activities; be it the endeavors of American football or even the gentleman’s game, golf. What a majority of individuals do not know is that many players, especially rookies, are subjected to incidents of bullying and hazing. These incidents are thought to be a ceremonial act of welcoming to signify one’s readiness for being part of the group. In the mainstream media and for most of society, bullying and hazing are signs of exerting authority and seeking to enforce one’s influence over others. It is never the right thing to do considering it reeks of insensitivity, an outright condescending attitude, and thinly veiled hate and distaste. Bullying is not a new phenomenon in American society. In fact, a majority of institutions have reported numerous cases of bullying and hazing. If left unchecked, these activities are self-damaging and do serious and severe harm to the victims at whom these acts are targeting. The question that arises among all these arguments is whether American institutions are doing enough to curb this vice and protect innocent individuals who fall victim to such acts. Recent incidents in American culture have proven that bullying and hazing have escalated from a form of initiation that upholds tradition, to a malicious form of personalized bullying that needs dire attention.
