As social workers, it is easy to forget our own needs when we try to focus on our clients needs. The clients are in need of our support but over time we will be overwhelmed and depressed if we do not support our selves in the process. Since we provide clients with services to overcome their tragic and traumatic life events, we need to remember to not let that affect our own outlook on life. According to Grise-Owens (2000), social workers should remember to find ways to “survive” and “thrive” in order to not become “burned out” in the processes of their daily work. To do so, one should think about what makes him or her happy in life and try to accomplish that. Grise-Owens explained that having support in ones life could help social workers overcome the struggles of their work (2000). Self-care is another area that should be focused on as social workers so that one does not feel un-cherished (Grise-Owens, 2000). …show more content…

When I first started this job, I started to become very isolated from my family and friends and more focused on my work. On the days I worked, I would wake up at noon to get ready and go to work at 3:00 pm then come home at 11:30pm and sleep again. Since I work fulltime, it turned out that I was just living to go to work without having any other social interaction. Then I began to notice that I was becoming exhausted from all the work I picked up to help the unit.
