Geologist have research and analyze many theories but is still unsure, leaving a question of how long has the Earth been around? In 1860, John Phillips a geologist, used the idea of sedimentation to determine how old the Earth is. As rocks deteriorated throughout the years geologists measured the lower lying areas, like valleys, rivers, and oceans to determine the age of the Earth through the thickness of sedimentary deposit. Charles Lyell Charles Lyell was a British lawyer and one of the smartest geologists known at his time. He was known as the author of the Principles of Geology, which helped popularize the theories and concepts of uniformitarianism. The Principles of Geology was the first book written by Lyell and explained the changes in the earth’s surface. He used the research and information in the book as his proof to determine that the earth was over 6,000 years old. The central argument in his book was “the present is the key to the past”, this meant that to find out what happened in the past you had to look at what was happening now.
Mark Driscoll, the Pastor at Mars Hill, discusses six different views in his article, “What are the Various Views on Creation?” They are Historic and Young-Earth Creationism, the Gap Theory, the Literary Framework View, the Day-Age View and the Theistic Evolution. In each of these views, Driscoll discusses the age of the earth and the amount of time it took God to create the earth. I believe the Historic Creationism is more scriptural. Genesis 1:1 is self-explanatory when it states, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”. There was no time frame listed.

During this time the sea transgressed and regressed a number of times. The final regression of the Cretaceous sea occurred about 70 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, at the time of the Aguja Formation deposition. By observing the transgressive and regressive cycles of the Mid to Upper Cretaceous period a reasonable prediction of ocean depth over time can be made. Fossil data from the mid to Upper Cretaceous period predicts the sequence of rock strata in Big Bend National Park to be from bottom to top: limestone (containing clams, oysters, and ammonites), shale and clay (containing shellfish and marine reptile bones), limestone again, and sandstone and clay (both containing fossil wood and dinosaur bones) (Maxwell, 1967). Assuming that the rocks on the bottom are the earliest layer, it may be concluded that the earliest layer of rock was deposited in a relatively deep marine environment, then the ocean regressed to produce the next layer, then transgressed to produce the last.
In the novel, The Age of Miracles, the main conflict that arises is the slowing of the rotation of the Earth. We personally have had several questions about what could cause such a problem and how it could be resolved. We found lots of intriguing information about the research that has already been done. Stars are millions of light year away and thus it would take millions of years for the light to reach earth. Thus, evolutionist believe that the earth is millions of years old because light is reaching earth. However, this theory falls through when we realize that the speed of light may not be constant so we must consider time dilation to be a factor and light speed up the closer to gravity it becomes. Creationist also believes that the decay rate of rocks have increased over time so radiometric dating of fossil is not accurate. Based on radiometric dating, Carbon 14 is 300 million years old and should be extinct, but carbon 14 is found in diamonds. The evidence to support an old earth creation is inconsistent. I would tell the lady that was unsure the age of the earth that scripture should inform our interpretation of scientific evidence not the other way around. Christians must stand firm on the authority of the Bible or scripture will fall through. It is made up of many different rocks and minerals, we know that the composition of the Earth¡¦s crust is generally the same due to the mines and boreholes that humans have made down into it. Mines that have been dug go down and still bring up valuable minerals that can be found just as close to the Earth¡¦s surface.
Earth Hour is an annual international event, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This event actually asked us to think about what else we could be doing to make a difference to save our Earth. Countries that participate will switch off their lights for one hour to display a universal commitment to protect the one thing that unites us the entire planet. Unfortunately, most of us do not notice that this campaign will bring side effects, if we as a citizen participate in this campaign in a wrong way. Hence, the campaigns of Earth Hour has innumerable uses and like all campaigns, it has its drawbacks which encompass negative impact on human activities, enhancing energy reduction as well as releasing emission to the environment and perception of people about Earth Hour.
