Freeman states that the snack called “Inner Peas” (2013 David Freeman) how six-time more fat than the snack that has protein. The author goes on to show the difference between Whole Food place and fast food. Explaining how the Whole Food place is more expensive than fast food. Freeman feels that Whole Foods is not worth the price. The author strongly aggresses that you should always check to see what is in the food you are about to eat. By researching your diet, you more than likely going to make better choices when picking the food to eat. Freeman shows that scientists, physicians, food activists, nutritionists, celebrity chefs, and pundits all think the same way; calling processed food, a “foodlike substances.” Showing that Pollan believes that restaurants and grocery stores give more attention to processes food than Whole foods chain.
Pollan also, believes that grocery stores and restaurants have thrived by rejecting industrialized food instead of returning to natural, simple, nonindustrial, so these foods are called “wholesome-food” (2013 Michael Pollan).
The author underlines that humans turn to technology to help solve our problems. Freeman shows that technology is linked in for a cause in obesity. When using technology people usually sit and are not moving. A solution to technology is to turn our backs to technology.
Freeman shoes that there are Whole Food places in big towns and suburbs. In these Whole Food stores, you can still find “wholesome” food. An example of this is Vegan Cheesy Salad Booster, the package emphasizes that fact that the food is enhanced with spirulina, chlorella, and sea vegetable and the label said it the snack contents are raw- no processing. The label also, noted that this snack does not contain any genetically modified ingredients. The snack does contain, is more than three time the fat content per ounce as the beef patty in a Big
Mac. The author explains that scientist says that fat carries twice as many calories as carbohydrates and protein, per gram. People’s brains crave fat, surge, and other problems carbs. Freeman shows that processed food is not the big problem of obesity. Finally, the author does not prove the point of view but, if he must pick between Whole Foods and processed food, he will choose to eat proceed food.
Mark Bittman’s article “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” tells about how people are not really getting their money’s worth when it comes to consuming junk food. He does this by showing the differences between ordering a meal at McDonald’s and cooking a meal at home. The twenty-eight dollars that is spent to feed a family of four at McDonald’s can be put to use making a meal that could last for a couple of days and feed more than four (Bittman 660). Engineered to be addictive, hyper-processed food has a taste that makes people wanting more. Lastly, Bittman addresses the convenience of junk food provides nowadays. Therfore, the cost of junk food is not really cheaper in comparison to a home cooked meal.
Journalist, David H. Freedman, and author of How Junk Food Can End Obesity, dedicates an article to address the situation regarding the wholesome food movement. In his writings, he points out that although this new phenomenon brags about healthier foods being made available, there are some faulty aspects within the cause. Many loyal fast-food customers are put off by the anouncement of healthier menu items, while health fanatics are raving about restaurants catering to their needs. There are two types of consumers in the world of food; both of which are blind to the opposing sides’ work ethics.

Amongst the sea of public opinion on obesity, you can find two articles: Escape from the Western Diet by Michael Pollan and The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food by Michael Moss. Each article presents a different view on where the blame lies in this public health crisis and what we should do to amend the issue. “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” by Michael Moss addresses many issues with big companies and their thought process. Although Moss neglects to show the things that companies do right or do because the consumer desires it. He doesn’t bring to light the different options that big companies put out that are healthier for the consumer. Moss does a good job of pointing out what he believes to be the short coming of big companies towards their consumers. Are big food companies meeting our needs or creating them for us? Should they have to set limits between meeting our genuine needs and making a profit for themselves? Moss’s point of view of the conscious effort to make food inexpensive and addictive is an accurate portrayal.
Michael Pollan and David Freedman are two reputable authors who have written about different types of food and why they are healthy or why they are damaging to our health. Michael Pollan wrote “Escape from the Western Diet” and David Freedman wrote “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”. Imagine Pollan’s idea of a perfect world. Everything is organic. McDonald’s is serving spinach smoothies and Walmart is supplying consumers with raw milk. The vast majority of food in this world consists of plants grown locally, because almost everyone is a farmer in order to keep up with supply and demand. How much does all this cost? What happened to all the food that is loved just because it tastes good?
