A hero is defined as “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding. achievements, or noble qualities” (Merriam Webster). Desmond Doss fought in Okinawa during World War II as a medic and saved seventy-five soldiers. Doss was passionate about serving his country, but refused to use a firearm. Beowulf, a highly praised Anglo-Saxon hero from Geatland, went to Denmark to help the Danes. Beowulf heard about the Dane’s struggle against the monster Grendel and decided to assume control. As Doss reenters the ridge with no cover, he is determined to rescue the survivors and return them to safe land. Doss repeats the saying “Please Lord, help me get one more” (Hacksaw Ridge). Doss gains motivation to keep reentering the ridge as he continues to rescue more survivors. Doss’s determination and motivation helped him recover seventy-five injured soldiers. Doss lowers each soldier down the ridge with a rope. Even though he is tired and hurting, Doss is determined to save more soldiers that were fighting for him. If it were not for Doss’s determination, many of the injured soldiers would not have returned home. Doss ensures every soldier is treated with great care and proves he is very dependable. The soldiers depend on Doss to attend to their wounds during open fire, and he always does. Doss administers morphine, plasma, medicine, etc. to these soldiers while being shot at Hacksaw Ridge. Doss would always return to the soldiers. While searching the ridge, he can only carry one soldier at a time, so he always tells the soldiers “I’ll be right back for you” (Hacksaw Ridge).
