Patty Jenkins, also known as Patricia Lea Jenkins, is an American film director and screenwriter, once said, “It’s not easy to be a hero. You do it because of what you believe, not because of what other people deserve.” This may be interpreted as, you can’t just one day decide to be a hero and that heroes know what is right and they don’t care who deserves it or not. In the minds of these heroes everyone deserves to be saved, even if they have vendetta against them; that is what makes them a hero. Although heroes care for others, and put others before themselves, they are not always fearless when looking danger in the face, but overcoming those fears is what makes them stronger than the people who need to be saved.

themselves, but for others, this shows that they are very caring. Determination is the only thing keeping them going when caring so intensely. In the White House Funeral Sermon for Abraham Lincoln, “...not for himself only, not for us only, but for all people in all their coming generations till time shall be no more…” This can be interpreted as, President Lincoln took risks not to ensure his safety, but to make sure he would be known as a person who takes action. The actions of Lincoln exemplify the caring attitude. For instance, Lincoln knew what he was doing would revolutionize the way not only the way his generation would live but all future generations. This showed that he cared not only for himself but for people he would never get the pleasure of meeting. In World War II a true hero was born. In one of the bloodiest battles of WWII, Hacksaw Ridge, soldiers were lucky to have Desmond Doss as a part of their medical team. He saved 75 people, most of which others had left behind, because they thought those people weren’t worth saving. He cared about every single one, making it back to base so that they can get the medical attention needed to stay alive despite who was after him. In addition to Lincoln and Doss, the 9/11 boatlift many heroes stepping up to the plate. Vincent Ardolino, Captain of the Amberjack V, told his wife before he left the house, “I gotta go do something.” Not I wonder how things are going or has anyone been injured, he got up and did something; that is more than most of the people in this world can say about themselves. Although heroes can be anyone, he is one not will be one. Also, getting up and doing something, shows just how much he cares. Someone who risked his life, supplies, and love to save others that proves heroism. Who would do any of these admirable things if they didn’t care for others in such a compassionate way? Heroes are selfless when it comes to another’s safety, whether that be jumping into burning cars, running into the twin towers, or taking your father’s place in battle. Amazing things happen everyday, for instance, an officer on patrol in Los Angeles, named Donald Thompson, jumped into a burning car to save someone stuck inside just before it blew up. Subsequently, Thompson suffered many injuries, including terrible skin burns. Morris, the incredible author, wrote, “Thompson suffered horrifying first and second degree burns. Yet he kept right on with his single-minded rescue mission.” The authentic definition of selflessness, from Dictionary.com, is someone who is ¨concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own.¨ A perfect precedent of selflessness, is the Man in the Red Bandana, who's full name is Welles Crowther. He is an astounding example of a selfless person. He kept going back into the Twin Towers to save people who were trapped and get them back to safety during september 11th attack. The New York Times wrote, “He led a first group to the 61st floor, then pulled his bandanna over his mouth and told them he was going back up to guide down others.” Not many people would voluntarily charge into a burning building for perfect strangers. Samples of selflessness are even shown in movies, to give kids an example who they could one day aspire to be. For instance, in the movie Mulan, the main character disguises herself as a male soldier, Ping, to bravely take her father's place in the Imperial Army. She didn’t know if she would come back but had decided that risking her life was better than putting her father in danger while he was ailing. Heroes are not always fearless, for they are full of all sorts of doubts and consternation.
What makes them different than every other human being is that they use their fear as a car uses gasoline. Instead they recognize their fear, but know what needs to happen, despite their fear and doubts. In the Narrative of Frederick Douglass, Douglass wrote, “...the ferocious beasts of the forest lie in wait for their prey..” This was Douglass’s response to his fear of talking to the whites who had once taken his freedom and liberty. Although he was uncertain, he still spoke and still conquered his fears, while inspiring others to fight for their liberty. Morris once wrote about an officer with fears that were sighted, faced, and then overthrown. Morris once said, “He leaped into the guy’s path, using his own body as a ...human body cushion...” He leapt after a suicidal individual, who was only minorly bruised, while he survived with further injuries. It’s amazing to know that fearful human beings can still overcome their fears and use that energy to create courage, for these heroes were a lot stronger than they thought. That power, determination, and compassion is what got them to overcome their fears and do what was right even if it meant prioritizing their lives after
another’s. A hero's ability to care for the wellbeing of others and not just themselves is what sets them aside from ordinary people. Additionally, a hero’s ability to completely forget about their wellbeing to ensure another's is incredible. Even the fact that they are full of fears but continue to do everything they can to stay courageous, shows how strong they actually are. Hero means a lot of things to a lot of people, but most importantly it means embracing fears, caring absolutely and putting others first.
A hero is someone who doesn’t give up and keeps on fighting for their goal. Jackie Robinson is a great hero and came over great challenges, but he achieved his goal. How Jackie Robinson embodies the human spirt is that he broke the color barrier, and the challenges he faced, and his life.
While reading “ Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, many opinions can be formed of Chris McCandless. One, in particular, was the author's opinion which he blatantly stated on page 85. He didn't think that Chris was some reckless foolish insane idiot. He believed that competent otherwise he wouldn't have lasted so long. I agree with Krakauer, things Chris did on this journey did not show signs of some careless person. Chris was just an adventurer looking to get away from the expectations society had of him to see the world for what it really was.
scared for there own selves, that’s why I think Atticus is very courageous he is not scared
A brave hero often risks his/her lives to save someone else. In Zeitoun, Dave Eggers tells us a story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, the hard working Syrian American owner of a contracting company in New Orleans. Zeitoun and his wife Kathy ran the company together. They have three children named Nademah, Safiyah, Aisha. Kathy has a child from her first marriage. Zeitoun is very closed with his family and he takes his family like nobody else. When hurricane Katrina landed in 2005, endless number of people were affected. Mayor Nagin ordered a first time ever mandatory evacuation. Kathy moved with the children to her sister’s house in Baton Rouge. Zeitoun refused to leave with his family because he didn’t want lose his properties, but at the same time, his customers trusted him and gave him their house keys to check on their houses, which caused his separation with his family. This illustrates that Zeitoun is a responsible, powerful, trustworthy, and unselfish person. During the hurricane, Zeitoun was using a canoe rescuing people. Due to the lack of rescue work, many people didn’t get enough supports at that time. Zeitoun had the courage to sacrifice his family, safety, and selfish needs for saving the people.
Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. She is implying that the whole world could speak English; however, it would not be the same type of English because of how everyone learns and how others around
Jumping handcuffed from a third-story window at the Fulton County Pretrial Services in Atlanta, the man who leaped from the window fell head first and died. The 22-year-old man, Tyquan Devoun Richard was going to enter a drug intervention program at the Fulton County Superior Court at 10am when criminal law arrest him for a weapons charge.
The want for money drastically affected the Younger’s and changed their lives for the worst. In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, A family in 1950s Chicago want for money was putting a negative strain on the family.
There is so much that can be learned from the past. Especially from an event that was as catastrophic as this one. How does one person gain such a grip on so many people? How was he able to influence them to change their entire life’s to conform to what he wanted. Somehow he was able to get them to move to a completely new place and create a world all their (his) own. How does one person convince and force so many people that it was time for their life to end? How does he force them to kill themselves? So many questions that are still being answered to this day. There are plenty of movies and research done on this event but there is still a lot to learn.
In conclusion, true courage is shown in the story in many different ways by many different characters. There was not just one protagonist in this story who turns out to be a hero. In this story we had two plots. Each of the plots contained many heroic characters who not only did what they deemed morally just, but put their life behind what they believed in. Whether physically or mentally exerting themselves, almost every character, showed qualities like Martin Luther King Jr. They made bold statements in the community. They sent out messages that people would not forget. It is unfortunate that only now can we admire these type of people for what they did. Thankfully, they are remembered for their courage and that is what makes these characters world famous.
John Brown was an abolitionist who fought for freedom of slaves in the nineteenth century leading up to the Civil War. He was remembered for his bravery and dedication while taking action through the raid at Harper’s Ferry and the Pottawatomie Massacre. John Brown was a freedom fighter, religious warrior and political zealot. Although his violent approach was seen as an act of terrorism his ultimate goal was the emancipation of slavery justified by the word of God.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James has been the cause of many debates about whether or not the ghosts are real, or if this is a case of a woman with psychological disturbances causing her to fabricate the ghosts. The story is told in the first person narrative by the governess and is told only through her thoughts and perceptions, which makes it difficult to be certain that anything she says or sees is reliable. It starts out to be a simple ghost story, but as the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the governess has jumps to conclusions and makes wild assumptions without proof and that the supposed ghosts are products of her mental instability which was brought on by her love of her employer
The rulings made by the John Marshall and the Supreme court regarding the Cherokee and their inhabited land benefited the Cherokee. After decades of losing their land and withstanding the genocide of their people, the younger generations chose to go to court instead of turning to more bloodshed. The Supreme Court came to two conclusions on two different occasions regarding the Cherokee and their lands. The prior ruling stated, in short, that the Cherokee were subject to being protected by the constitution and could not be tried due to their non citizenship. The second ruling further protects the Cherokee from unconstitutional acts conducted by Georgia. These rulings were not only beneficial, but were impartial and withheld constitutionality.
Chris McCandless lived a life that can be examined in many different ways. He was an adventurer from the heart, and he didn’t want to conform to society’s views of how the world should be run and how each person should live their life. McCandless was able to stray from the normal progression of life, seen as going from graduating college to getting a 9-5 job and starting a family, by completely disappearing from his family’s life and trying to control his own life. In order to truly live life, one must be able to break free of the constricting confines of society, which control individuals and try to shape their life.
Weber, Ann. "WHAT MAKES A HERO? Ordinary People Put Their Lives on the Line to Help Others." The Blade [Toledo] 19 Apr. 2009, City Final ed., Toledo Magazine sec. Academic Search Premier. Web. 29 Oct. 2010.
There is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country, live mostly minorities and other ethic background. All their lives they’ve been expected to work harder and expected not succeed in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to become what everybody doubted they could. Escaping the crime, drugs, and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don’t go to college. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them someday.
