When a person texts on their cell phones, they are disconnecting themselves from everything around them, and only paying attention to what is in their hands. Texting, on a regular and daily basis, has both an emotional and physical effects on human beings. Texting can have many problems such as how it affects the people around the user, and how it affects teenagers at school. This paper will explain the problems of texting and how it affects people. In the long term, people are heavily affected by texting. They lose the grammar that they learned throughout their lives and now are more illiterate as stated in (McWhorter, 1). People are also become more anti social due to the excessive amount of texting in their lives. When people text on their …show more content…
When people text, they are basically using a completely different language according to (McWhorter, 1). People who are texting for extended periods of time tend to want to type quicker so they can get the text out as fast as they can, this is called cyber slang. Cyber slang uses phrases such as LOL, LMAO, TY, BRB, ext. This way of writing is fine for when people are texting but some may tend to use cyber slang on an everyday basis. Some people may accidentally use cyber slang during tests, quizzes, essays, etc. These people who do this may not realize what they are doing until it is pointed out to them. By doing this, it will affects how a person’s grade may come out and how their life will end up. While texting, people may not learning to their fullest potential. Phones are the biggest distraction to people and when in class according to (Vitelli, 1). When they have the chance, students will be texting as much as they can. When people type on the computer or text, they have the potential to forget how to write properly. Writing in cursive has been completely taken out of the school's curriculum for younger students according to (McWhorter). Everything in the world now revolves around technology and cell phones. On a daily basis people are disregarding what they are supposed to be learning because they are on their cell phones and not paying attention to what is being taught to them.. Another problem for students and texting is cyber bullying. According to (Tomaszewski 1), people can cyberslam others with a simple press of a button. A rumor can spread around to more people and a lot faster by using a cell phone. Some may say that cyberbullying is even worse than normal bullying in some ways. What goes on the internet stays on the internet, this could even push a person to want to kill themselves with the stress that has been put on them because of a text about them says
ANALYSIS The author’s purpose is to persuade the reader to learn how to control the use of smartphones and involve more in face-to-face conversation rather than chat online “It is not giving up our phones but about using them with greater intention” (Turker). She notices that many people do not really pay attention when it comes to face-to-face conversation because they get used to playing the phones. In the article, she gives out many details and examples to support her position, her sources are reliable. She points out a lot of facts from her own experiences and other’s interviews to prove the problems that are caused by texting that people do not even realize. She then argues how the smartphone is a psychological device that changes what we do and who we are.
Today in the Twenty-First century we have surpassed many technological advancements and excelled far past what we would have ever thought. One of our greatest technological advancements is the thing we hold in our hands everyday, our cell phones. Sometimes we don't realize just how much our phones can distract us from our lives. As a generation glued to our phones us teenagers send an average of 3,339 texts per month. In Randy Cohen's essay, “When texting is wrong” he states how we are overcome by texting and how it damages our social and personal lives.
A recent outbreak in teen texting is taking a toll on their daily lives. Many teenagers have cell phones. Their parents get them phones for their safety and well-being, but is that what teens really use them for? I for one know that I rarely call my parents or use my phone for important reasons. Most of the time, I’m scrolling through Instagram and snapchat, to keep up with everyone that I will see in less than a day. The editorial from The Jersey Journal, called Teens are going to extremes with texting, informs the common people of the statistics of teen texting. The editorials main argument is communicating the excessiveness of teen texting. The author develops this point through expert uses of word choice, but also extreme examples and statistics.
In our world there are many forms of communication and these devices are beginning to take a toll on our younger generations. In Jeffery Kluger’s article,” We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging,” the idea that younger generations are becoming socially inept due to technology is discussed. As these younger generations consume texting as a main form of communication other important social skills deteriate.
How often do we text? Text messaging is a very useful way to communicate; but, there are occasions where texting is unnecessary, for example in meetings, watching movies, interacting with family, and even in the shower. However, while texting can be overused, it can also help us get to know one another in easier and faster ways. In Natalie Y. Moore’s article “The Rule of Thumbs: Love in the Age of Texting," she explains how the use of texting it is slowly destroying the love between two people (Moore, 1). Although, some people might agree with Moore points of view, when she argues that texting is killing romance and it should be reserved for some notifications, such as “I’m running late;” others might disagree with this idea
Texting however keeps people at arm’s length and prevents relationships from getting past a certain level of rapport. Text messages help people create distance between them and another person. This distance can lead to many things, like lost friendship. Friendships can be lost in text messages because of tone. I was texting my sister one day, who types in all capital letters, and finally halfway through the conversation I asked her why she was yelling at me, because that is how I was reading them, as me being yelled at. When she responded she was very confused, and told me that she didn’t realize that she had been yelling at me and was sorry. This can happen to anybody. People can confuse tone in text messages, and that can lead to one person arguing with someone who has no idea that they are in a fight. Text messages are also used by people to purposely keep others away from them, and by some it is used to hide. Alice G Walton, a science journalist with a Ph.D. in Biopsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience says, “People like to text because the message gives them the ability to hide,” (Walton). It is like the saying “a drunken mind speaks a sober heart,” When people are drunk they hide behind being it, and use alcohol as their mask, but when they are texting, it’s the phone. They are able to say what they would like, without having to actually face the person they are talking to, and
Studies have shown that students may be paying more attention to their phones than they are to their class work. Often during class, a student will be texting a friend with some unimportant message instead of paying attention to the teacher. They may look like they are quietly listening to the instructor , but under the edge of the desk, the hem of a jacket, or a stack of papers their fingers may be typing out some chit-chat news that has nothing to do with what they should be learning. Professor Fang-Yi Flora Wei, Ph.D. of the University of Pittsburg points out that "In-class texting interferes with the students ability to pay attention, which is necessary for effective cognitive learning (sciencedaily)." When we cannot understand or remember information, the result is usually poor grades. Also, according to Wikidot.com, Tech-Nation texting has a negative effect on the student's ability to write papers. They are having problems with punctuation and run-on sentences. Shortcuts found in instant messaging and texting have been finding their way into papers students are writing. They are in such a habit of writing "u" and "ur" for you and your, that some teens have seemed to accepted these letters as real words. Many have also forgotten where to put commas and periods because they seldom use them when texting. While these are some of the concerns about the impact teen texting has on c...
“I’m sorry I didn’t hear you. I was responding to a text message. What were you saying?” Have you ever heard this expression or something similar; we all have. This is clear evidence of how cellphones can be a very big distraction in many social settings. Some people check their cell phone first thing in the morning. It is so easy to waste time playing on your cell phone rather than doing something productive. Cell phone use, can cause harm physically, socially, and academically, although cell phones have some good qualities, advancements in technology is causing the world to gradually become dependent on technology.
The issue with texting and social media is not that is makes humans totally and completely unsocial. Matter of fact, in most cases it comes down to people being too “social.” Technology is purposely created nowadays to allow users to communicate with one another, especially adolescents. There has been vast amounts of research done on this topic but a specific one to mention was done by an assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Culture in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington. The professor, Ilana Gershon, conducted research about technology and communication with students at the college campus. Gershon stated in her book, The Breakup 2.0, that, “To think of technology as something that is used in social int...
In the sources that I found about text message and teen literacy, it showed and also informed me on how teens take the next talk to the classrooms in schools and how it creates bad grammar among themselves. During my research I found out that many kids and kids use shorthanded text and it affects their literacy in so many ways. We as teens don’t think that our findings will benefit anyone unless they want to have a short knowledge in grammar. As teens we don’t really see how doing something wrong can harm us. Such as texting shorthanded, and with silly faces. It affects our literacy by not knowing how to correctly punctuate their words, grammar and speaking. In the research that I looked up, that teens send about one thousand eight hundred
Step onto any college campus and take a look around. You will find clumps of students standing around in circles, phones in hand, typing away. What is it they are doing? Texting. Ever since the first text message was sent in 1993, the use of text messaging as a means of communication has spread like wild fire, especially amongst the adolescent generation. And with this new form of communication a new language has appeared; text-speak, the shortening of common words into abbreviations and acronyms (Drouin 49). While texting and the text-speak language seem to have been welcomed by many, what affect is this new technology having on the way we communicate? Is it possible that texting is negatively affecting our ability to use formal written communication, or is this idea just a myth perpetuated by negative media attention? And what changes has texting brought to the way we communicate person-to person? Are these changes positive, negative, or perhaps a mixture of both?
It’s impossible to walk around the streets without seeing someone texting. The World Bank says, “Three quarters of people on earth have access to a mobile phone.” Cell phones are a part of our everyday lives. Our society is obsessed with communication. Technology has some positives and negatives.
Text messaging is damaging our literacy and communication skills as a society. Calling someone on the phone or writing them a letter is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. There is a new language that is being learned and not taught across the globe. It is the language of Textese, and it has quickly consumed the lives of millions across the world. There will always be the protector of language arts. These are the shrinking number of people everyone knows, that will continue to handwrite letters and sign them with proper English and etiquette. It may be as simple as picking up the phone and calling a friend or relative. It may be even simpler than that, in that people put forth an effort to talk to the person sitting next to or across from you and engage them in a conversation. Texting and textisms have become so common and widespread that using proper English, correct spelling, and full sentences is also becoming a thing of the past. People that constantly use text and instant messaging may have difficulty with literacy and expressing themselves in writing form. The research shows that text messaging has deteriorated how we communicate and express ourselves because textisms have become an easier and quicker form of communication that has affected literacy in children and adults.
There has always been controversy as to teens not being able to concentrate and focus because of texting and cell phone use. Visiting any U.S high school can show the lack of concentration and focus of students caused by using their phones. Benefits of having a cell phone can have the advantage of reporting crimes as they happen, handling an emergency, and always being connected with friends and family; however there are drawbacks such as reducing concentration, having poor grades, and causing an accident while the driver is using his phone.
Texting is a lot more private and if you are in a public place you are not distracting other people by talking on the phone. You can also have an argument with someone via text without anyone knowing it. Can you imagine the attention you get by fighting with someone over the phone? You will probably turn heads and get some nasty stares. Besides, you can also get more things done while you text aside from talking on the
