Looking around the world today, it is almost impossible to imagine an existence controlled by segregation. In America, we are governed by the idea that all human beings are equal. But unfortunately, there was a time when life was different and human suffering was rampant. Without the courage of incredible individuals this might still be our truth today. But one man by the name of William Wilberforce changed the world and it’s view on human slavery. In 1759 on August 24 William was born. His political career started in 1780 and he became an Evangelical Christian in 1785 which greatly influenced his lifestyle and his reform policies. included Thomas Clarkson, Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton. Wilberforce’s ultimate goal was the complete abolition of slavery in Britain. For the country, the slave trade had been introduced in the 16th century and by 1783 there was a consistent route that included the purchase, transport and selling of slaves. Slave dependent products such as sugar, tobacco and cotton were around 80 percent of Britain's foreign income. Domination of the trade allowed for huge wealth and superiority over other countries. It is estimated that while over 11 million slaves were transported, over 1.4 million died due to the inhumane condition during the voyage. Evidence like this was the beggining support to Wilberforce's claims. William met with James Ramsey in 1783. Ramsey was a ship’s surgeon and had first hand knowledge and evidence of the horrors of slavery. Abolition gained ground with undisputable support. The Testonites, as they were called later, continued their study and in 1786 and the prompting of the Middletons, they decided that they were ready to take their case to Parliament. Another source was Thomas Clarkson, who had first hand evidence and Quaker support.
It was planned that Wilberforce would introduce a motion that would notify a bill of abolition during the 1789 parliamentary session. But due to a stress related condition he was forced to step back and let other members of the abolition introduce the bill. To alleviate the pain William used opium and continued to for the rest of his life which caused further problems. Once he recovered he gave his first major speech on May 12, 1789 and gave 12 resolutions condemning the slave trade. William’s overwhelming evidence took his opponents by surprise but they were able to avoid the inevitable by delaying the vote so that they could prepare their own evidence. Although the hearings were delayed which caused opposition, the process went through. In 1790 the gathering had finished hearing witnesses and the following year William introduced an abolition bill. To add to the frustration, the bill was easily defeated 163 to 88. Pro slavery advocated proved aggravating with charges that slaves were not capable to maintaining decency and order. wasted. On April 2, 1792 a bill calling for the gradual abolition was passed but it was little more than a diversion. In February the following year, Wilberforce came even closer but a difference of eight vote denied him his wishes once again. A crafty tactic was used to push the abolition forward, by banning British subjects from aiding or participating in the slave trade to the French colonies. The Foreign Slave Bill was passed. From this point onward William’s health caused him to limit his political activity. In April of 1833, he gave his final speech. On July 26 1833, he heard that the government had conceded to pass his Slavery Abolition Bill. He learned that his strife, work and anguish had not been for nothing. Tragically, he passed three days later, just one month before the House of Lords passed the Slavery Abolition Act which abolished slavery in the British Empire starting the August of 1834. Plantation owners were granted 20 million in compensation and other guidelines were established. Wilberforce had won his lifelong battle and the freedom of over 800,000 slaves was the result. Without the work of abolitionists such as Wilberforce, our world would filled with separation and inequality and the world we live in would have never become as wonderful as it is.
Slavery’s Constitution by David Waldstreicher can be identified as a very important piece of political analytical literature as it was the first book to recognize slavery 's place at the heart of the U.S. Constitution. Waldstreicher successfully highlights a number of silences which most of the general public are unaware of, for example, the lack of the word “slavery” in the Constitution of the United States of America. Also, the overwhelming presence and lack of explicit mention of the debate of slavery during the construction of the document.
David Wilmot was an avid abolitionist. He became a part of the Free-Soil Party, which was made chiefly because of rising opposition to the extension of slavery into any of the territories newly acquired from Mexico. Not only was he opposed to the extension of slavery into “Texas,” he created the Wilmot Proviso. The Wilmot Proviso, which is obviously named after its creator, was an amendment to a bill put before the U.S. House of Representatives during the Mexican War; it provided an appropriation of $2 million to enable President Polk to negotiate a territorial settlement with Mexico. David Wilmot created this in response to the bill stipulating that none of the territory acquired in the Mexican War should be open to slavery. The amended bill was passed in the House, but the Senate adjourned without voting on it. In the next session of Congress (1847), a new bill providing for a $3-million appropriation was introduced, and Wilmot again proposed an antislavery amendment to it. The amended bill passed the House, but the Senate drew up its own bill, which excluded the proviso. The Wilmot Proviso created great bitterness between North and South and helped take shape the conflict over the extension of slavery. In the election of 1848, the terms of the Wilmot Proviso, a definite challenge to proslavery groups, were ignored by the Whig and Democratic parties but were adopted by the Free-Soil party. Later, the Republican Party also favored excluding slavery from new territories.
The original edition of The Strange Career of Jim Crow had as its thesis that segregation and Jim Crow Laws were a relative late comer in race relations in the South only dating to the late 1880s and early 1890s. Also part of that thesis is that race relations in the South were not static, that a great deal of change has occurred in the dynamics of race relations. Woodward presents a clear argument that segregation in the South did not really start forming until the 1890s. During a period of time, the world lost its values due to ambition. Blacks were enslaved for being different. Races became a huge part of people’s everyday talk and to succeed, farmers and business owners had to make African Americans do their dirty work for them. During this period of time, people like Joe Starks from “The Eyes Were Watching God” and people like Frederick Douglass’s slavemasters became abundant in the world. The belief that they were superior to everyone else lead them to impose power in a way that even themselves could not tolerate. Even though “The Eyes Were Watching God” was written after slave abolition, Joe Starks and Douglass’s slavemasters have many characteristics in common and differences which are worthy to be noticed.
During the late 19th and early 20th century, racial injustice was very prominent and even wildly accepted in the South. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois were two of the most renowned “pioneers in the [search] for African-American equality in America” (Washington, DuBois, and the Black Future). Washington was “born a slave” who highly believed in the concept of “separate but equal,” meaning that “we can be as [distant] as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress” (Washington 1042). Segregation is the act of setting someone apart from other people mainly between the different racial groups without there being a good reason. The African American’s had different privileges than the white people had. They had to do many of their daily activities separated from the white people. In A Lesson Before Dying there were many examples of segregation including that the African American’s had a different courthouse, jail, church, movie theater, Catholic and public school, department stores, bank, dentist, and doctor than the white people. The African American’s stayed downtown and the white people remained uptown. The white people also had nicer and newer building and attractions than the African American’s did. They had newer books and learning tools compared to the African American’s that had books that were falling apart and missing pages and limited amount of supplies for their students. The African American’s were treated as if they were lesser than the white people and they had to hold doors and let them go ahead of them to show that they knew that they were not equal to them and did not have the same rights or privileges as they did just because of their race. In A Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass segregation is shown through both slavery and the free African American’s during this time. The Strange Career of Jim Crow, by C. Van Woodward, traces the history of race relations in the United States from the mid and late nineteenth century through the twentieth century. In doing so Woodward brings to light significant aspects of Reconstruction that remain unknown to many today. He argues that the races were not as separate many people believe until the Jim Crow laws. To set up such an argument, Woodward first outlines the relationship between Southern and Northern whites, and African Americans during the nineteenth century. He then breaks down the details of the injustice brought about by the Jim Crow laws, and outlines the transformation in American society from discrimination to Civil Rights. Woodward’s argument is very persuasive because he uses specific evidence to support his opinions and to connect his ideas. Considering the time period in which the book and its editions were written, it should be praised for its insight into and analysis of the most important social issue in American history.
Black and white abolitionists shared common assumptions about the evil of slavery, the "virtue of moral reform", and the certainty of human progress"(1). Schor, Garnet,1877, & Lanngston, 1989). This shared understanding provided "the basic for the interracial solidarity" and cooperation so vital in the crusade against slavery"(2). (Schor and Garnet, 1877). But blacks also brought a distinct perspective to the antislavery movement. Their abolitionism was shaped profoundly by their personal experience and racial oppression. Unlike most white abolitionists, they conceived of antidlavery as an all-encompassion struggle for racial equality, and they took a more pragramatic, less doctrinaire approach to antislavery tactics. The contrast between the two abolitionists -- black and white -- become increasingly apparent in the 1840s and 1850s as black expressed a growing militancy, asserted greater independence, and called for racially exclusive organization and initiatives.

As the United States grew, the institution of slavery became a way of life in the southern states, while northern states began to abolish it. While the majority of free blacks lived in poverty, some were able to establish successful businesses that helped the Black community. Racial discrimination often meant that Blacks were not welcome or would be mistreated in White businesses and other establishments. A comparison of the narratives of Douglass and Jacobs demonstrates the full range of demands and situations that slaves experienced, and the mistreatment that they experienced as well. Throughout the first part of this semester, our class has discussed slave religion a few times. Different claims from certain people and the class discussions have opened up a deeper understanding of slave religion for me. From African-American slaves to the black race now, I believe that black people have come a long way in recognizing their identity. African-American theologians and religious historians like James Cone and Gayraud Wilmore and scholars like Albert Raboteau have located within slave religion of the importance in maintaining culture for African-Americans. Cone and Wilmore proposed ideas of Black Theology. I believe that their theories show how African-Americans can gain their own identity through their own practices of religion and culture. I believe that the greatest struggle of African-Americans in a racist society is the struggle to regain collective identity and culture. However, they show how it is very possible to rise above racial discrimination, and stereotypes. Although Albert Raboteau was not necessarily a theologian, his claims of slaves finding their own way of life despite being dehumanized, easily relate to the ideas of Cone and Wilmore. The arguments and ideas that Cone, Wilmore, and Raboteau put forward make me wonder about what it means to be black in America. I believe that the battle for culture and identity is at stake for African-Americans; from past to present. However, I will show how the ideas and claims of James Cone, Gayraud Wilmore, and Albert Raboteau make way for the African-American race.
