The book Blind, written by Rachel DeWoskin, is about a highschool sophomore named Emma, who went blind after being struck in the face with a firework. When she first lost her sight, Emma was placed in a hospital for over 2 months, and once she was released, she could finally go home again. DeWoskin uses the characterization of Emma throughout the beginning of the text to help the reader understand the character’s struggle more. Especially in the first few chapters, it was difficult for Emma to adapt to a world without sight. For instance, DeWoskin writes, “And sat down, numb, on our gold couch. And tried to open my eyes, rocked, counted my legs and arms and fingers. I didn’t cry. Or talk” (DeWoskin 44). As a result of losing a very important scent, she’s started to act differently from a person with sight.

Individuals who are deaf or are hearing impaired are faced with many problems in today’s world. There are so many tasks and activities that are done today that deaf or hearing impaired people may have difficulty doing because of there handicap. There handicap used to stop them or inhibit them from doing something that they are interested in or there friends and neighbors would do. However in today there are new and different technologies, that help the deaf and hearing impaired in the activities in which they want to participate in which is hard for them to take part in because of there handicap. Technology is used to help with everyday tasks in the lives of deaf and hearing impaired individuals. With out this new technology which is being invented everyday, deaf and hearing impaired people may be considered to have a handicap which prevents them from certain activities, but this is not the case anymore, now these people just have different obstacles which through the use of technology they are learning to over come. They can do anything that regular normal range of hearing individuals can do, due to the new technology being invented everyday.
David Lepofsky is a blind Canadian lawyer and the chairman of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Alliance, who have suffered from vision loss. Blind for much of his life, Lepofsky understands the hardships that people with disabilities are forced to go through daily in society. As a lawyer and chairman of the alliance, his goal is to advocate for new laws to help disables overcome the barriers faced upon society such as unequal access to services, discrimination, and emotional stress.
He showed that, like most things in life, having a disability can be overcome with a bit of work. He showed with thinking flexibility can lead to solving problems like overcoming color blindness by his switching to etching. I believe this helped the students learn the alphabet and see the differences between letters. However, most of the students already read this book and knew most of the alphabet well. It was great to review the book and alphabet with them again, though, because some students still have trouble identifying all of the letters of the alphabet.
Think of ways we could help illiterate people. It’s as easy as reading a sign for them or the back of a box of cereal. Helping an illiterate person only takes a few minutes out of our day, but the help is very seldom seen in our society. It may not be easy to just spot someone in a grocery store that is struggling to read a label, but think of how hard it is for an illiterate person to walk up to someone and ask for help reading the ingredients on a box of cereal. Not only would it be hard for them to build up the courage to ask for help, but they would also have the fear of embarrassment or getting shut down.

Stevie was born premature. He was placed in an incubator, received too much oxygen, and went blind. Stevie believes that he was lucky to be alive (Beyer, 2002). Since blind people can’t rely on their vision, they have to rely on their senses like touch and sound. People that are blind can tell how someones feeling just by the tone of their voice. Eventually a blind person is going to realize that sound is going to become the most important sense. Stevie could understand this from a very young age (Beyer, 2002). When he learned that sound was very important, he became more fascinated by music. Stevie had to always make noise because he hated silence. At one point his noise developed into music (Beyer, 2002). Stevie has always known that people are sad about his blindness more than him but the reason he wasn’t sad about it is because he doesn’t really understand what it means to have the gift of sight, so he didn’t have a reason to miss it (Gulla, 2008). As a child, Stevie’s mom brought him to many doctors to see if they could bring his sight back but none were able to do so. Stevie also attended school with other blind students. But even within his group of peers, there were cliques. The problems were made worse when students who were not blind would talk about the students who were blind (Beyer, 2002).
