Development of Arch It is not sure when Romans invented arch first. Some scholars and historians say Archimedes of Sicily was the inventor of the arch but there’s no concrete evidence of that. The Colosseum was used as a royal treat, entertainment where gladiators would fight with wild beast in front of people, animal hunt, theatre performances and public executions for public entertainment and also the King himself. Circling from the Circus Maximus to Capitoline hill, the triumph itself was restrained by the natural topography of the city but modified in accordance with specific monuments built along the triumphal route over time. By end of the third century AD, Rome was filled with triumphal architectural monuments as emperors erected arches, temples, and other grand structures to commemorate their military victories. These triumphal structures were built with the locational purpose of being integrated in the original pathway of the procession. Thus, a control of triumphal movement was established with the further development of triumphal architecture.
The Roman Empire rose to power in about 27 B.C. and lasted until 410. During this time, Roman influence reached its height and Rome established a lasting legacy in the history of western civilization. One aspect of the Roman legacy is their architectural achievements. Roman engineering and architecture stand out as some of the most marvelously sophisticated for the time, with the variety of structures they built and the means of construction. Roman architecture went through a golden age beginning in 27 B.C. and lasting until about 180 A.D. when the Empire began to decline. During this golden age, the Romans built coliseums, an intricate road network, aqueducts, and bathhouses. Many examples of these structures still stand today, a testament to Roman architecture genius.
The ancient Romans were skilled engineers and have left lasting contributions in this field. The Romans built a great network of roads connecting cities throughout their empire. They also built aqueducts and bridges using arches for support. The Roman arch design was by far the most important innovation of their time. The arch, however, would have been useless without the discovery of concrete. The Romans had many other such discoveries that would make their engineering skills known throughout the world.

Today the Roman arch is one of the most innovative tools that we have borrowed and perfected from the Romans. “During construction, arches are often supported by a wooden frame. Hydraulic cement-based concrete is certainly the most significant ancient Roman innovation that has come to be. Ancient Roman concrete was significant as it was cheap, and allowed the ancient world to build greater infrastructure. This in turn vitally helped revolutionise trade and many regions’ economy. The Romans also excelled in the highly practical art, architecture. The Romans were the first people in antiquity to use concrete on a massive scale. By using concrete in their new architectural designs, the Romans were able to construct huge buildings, bigger than the Greeks ever could have dreamed of.
They mostly adopted their technology from the Etruscans and the Greek people (Milani-Santarpia, April 23rd, 2014). Although their innovations were few and far between, the achievements that were accomplished during the Roman Era included triumphal arches, aqueducts, bronze valves, water pumps, medical and surgical tools, cesareans, fast-curing cement, reinforced concrete, and even the calendar we use today (Milani-Santarpia, April 23rd, 2014). Even though Rome didn’t have many innovations, the one’s they did have are still being used today. Many aspects of Roman culture help make Rome unique, even today, but most people recognize Rome because of the buildings and landmarks that litter Rome. Some of the landmarks that people know as Roman are, but not limited to, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Catacombs, Pantheon, the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, the Castel Sant’ Angelo, the Old Appian Way, and the Spanish Steps (Rome’s Unique History, April 24th, 2014).

To that end, the Romans perfected three architectural elements: concrete, the arch, and the vault. These three elements helped lighten the load carried by Roman structures while maintaining overall durability.
