How Did Ancient Greece Influenced Western Society

Between 800 B.C. to 500 B.C an advanced society was founded. It was made up of many small independent city-states who became larger and more connected. “Emigration was one way to relieve some of this tension. Land was the most important source of wealth in the city-states; it was also, obviously, in finite supply. The pressure of population growth pushed many men away from their home poleis and into sparsely populated areas around Greece and the Aegean.” (history.com). This society is known to us today as Ancient Greece. Ancient Rome on the other hand was founded in 753 B.C. Beginning in the eighth century B.C. “Ancient Rome grew from a small town on central Italy’s Tiber River into an empire that at its peak encompassed most of continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands.” (history.com). Both of these ancient societies paved the future and influenced the world. In western civilization the mark that these two civilizations left is much more clear. With that being said was one more influential than the other when it comes to western civilization? Ancient Greece was more influential in western society because they were the first democratic society, built advanced inventions, and Greece even influenced Rome.

Roman architecture and Greek architecture are strikingly similar. The mythology is nearly the same, though the names are different, both sets of Gods reside on Mount Olympus. Western historians talk about Magna Grecia, a period beginning in the 8th Century BC in which the Greeks colonized what is now known as modern day Sicily, Calabria, Apulia, and Salento.
