How to Survive High school
1.Know your way around
Everything is in the same boat at the very start of school however soon after you are expected to know your way around. It can be difficult being one of those people who learn slower than others. I remember one of my teachers getting mad at this girl countless times for being late to class the second week of school. It is better to figure out your way sooner than later if you are in this situation. Whenever I think about not knowing your way around I think about one of my friends. It is the second month of school and he always walks right past our advisory class. I don 't understand how he doesn 't know where it is by now and that he keeps making the same mistake. Luckily he always realizes before he goes into another classroom which would be awkward. One of my friends went on to tell me how he has walked into the wrong classroom countless times. To make it worse he has walked in late to the wrong classroom while the teacher was talking. If this was me I would have died of embarrassment and I would forever be haunted by that memory. Whether you want to admit it or not everyone 's always judging off of your actions. You don 't want to have a reputation of being the kid who doesn 't know his way around school.
2. Learn what type of teachers you have.
In order to survive high school ones need to figure out what type of teachers you have as quickly as you can. There are many different categories that teachers can fall into. The first teacher to be aware of is the overly strict foreign language teacher. No matter what you say they want it said in their language even if they haven 't taught you it yet. One example of this would be a French teacher who you ...
... middle of paper ...
...f you had done it right away.
5. Balance Yourself
Some of my friends complain constantly because they did not balance themselves. They stress how they have no time to do all of their AP homework because after school they go to newspaper club, then soccer practice, and then eat dinner before they can do their homework. I asked them why they took so many AP classes if they didn 't have the the time for it. Their response was that they wanted to take AP classes because it will look good on their college transcript. When I try to tell them nicely that it is sort of their fault for taking 4 AP classes and doing extracurricular activities they respond, by saying that it is the teacher 's fault for assigning so much homework. I decided to stop asking them why they decided to try to do everything. The reason being that they were not going to admit that it was their fault.
Throughout the span of the past few weeks I have traversed the globe, visiting several countries and regions, only to realize that although new methods develop, language as a way of expressing ones self has remained the most effective. Despite this fact, language still has its pitfalls. Neil Postman, in his essay “Defending Against the Indefensible,'; outlines seven concepts that can be used to aid a student in better understanding the language as a means of communication. He describes how modern teaching methods leave a student vulnerable to the “prejudices of their elders';, further stating that a good teacher must always be skeptical. He urges teachers of all subjects to break free from traditional teachings as well as “linguistical tyranny';
A schedule of a student becomes very tight as they need to balance everything out in all ways they can. For example, this year due to me taking a College Now class I have needed to compromise my entire schedule, donating another hour of my life into school. Through the past years of high school my classes started at 8:00 AM, however, now my classes start at 7:00 AM. Along with this class I have regents based classes which I manage such as Physics, English, and U.S. History, yet I take Pre-Calc this year. As a student, I always hear other students around the school complaining about the amount of work they have to do, however, they don’t realize that this work is what leads to their future success. For me complaining is not a valid excuse, as I certainly believe that there should be a deadline for everything because we can manage everything as long as we are determined. A person like me, who receives an assignment, which may be due in the next two weeks will manage their time out and complete it in the next two days, thinking that what if I have more things to do. Throughout all the school years that I have attended, there has not been one assignment that I didn’t complete or didn’t hand it in on time. Where I come from and the teachings of my parents, have taught me that family time and family are two significant parts of your life, which no matter what happens
“When in doubt eat fruit.” That is the advice Francesca Haller gives her daughter, Nicole, any time Nicole is hungry and isn’t sure what she wants. Nicole is a sophomore American Sign Language major at Northeastern University.
As discussed in class, discourse is our communication. Furthermore, author James Paul Gee of “What is Literacy” defines discourse as an “identity kit” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). Gee includes discourse as a combination of one’s thinking, acting, and language that is associated to a group of others. There are different kinds of discourses; two discourses that will be discussed in this paper are primary and secondary. Primary discourse is the “oral mode developed in the primary process of enculturation” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). The primary discourse in this paper is the first-person experience I had in high school. Secondary discourse is “developed in association with and by having access to and practice with these secondary institutions” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). School, work, and church are examples of secondary institutions. The secondary discourse in the paper is attending the University of Arkansas and writing this paper. According to Gee, “secondary discourse can serve as a meta-discourse to critique the primary discourse…” (“What is Literacy?”). Throughout this process I wanted to know if high school is destined. Was my high school experience awful or is there a sociological reasoning behind the events? With that, I have researched the social construct and applied it to my previous experiences enabling me to truly discover if high school is destined.
I remember moving to a new school and not knowing the language. Students helped me learn French and it seemed so hard at first. Sometimes, students did not always teach me the nicest things to say, such as profanity, but everything was fun and new. Teachers were very nice and understanding due to the fact that I ...
However, the difficulties I was experiencing during my first year of high school made me realize that it was imperative to meticulously scrutinize the way I studied in order to ameliorate and become the student I used to be. Additionally, I became aware that my ability to speak English was affecting me, but later I came to the conclusion that if this was a determining factor in my performance in class, I had to challenge myself by engaging in more rigorous courses. As time went on, however, due to the fact that I was surrounded by students I considered to be far ahead, I felt very intimidated by my advanced classes. Furthermore, I became aware that some of my teachers from the advanced placement classes seemed to doubt my ability to perform at the level expected, just by hearing my accent. To be condemned to failure simply because I did not speak English the same way my fellow classmates did, was a terrible sinking feeling. Nonetheless, this circumstance made me very diligent in all my classes, for it made me very attentive to the topics discussed, and it made me evaluate the extent to which I studied. As a result, with my grades and work ethics throughout the year, I proved those teachers wrong and received an apology from the one I came to admire
College English is a big difference compared to how high school English was taught. Many differences that I have noticed with these few past weeks that I have been here at Fresno State University would be how the group exercises are structured, how the professor shows interest about the student’s improvements with their work, and how the course materials are presented to the class. High school was not the greatest experience that I could have had during my educational years. Many of my teachers that I had throughout my high school career were not the worst but they were far from the best. I always felt like they did not care about how our work turned out, also they always seemed to help the students that were good in the subject, and that they
High school is a jungle. There are silent rules that can’t be broken and foreign territories with boundaries that can’t be crossed. Entering the high school battlefront is life changing for everyone, especially freshmen, and that is just the beginning of the next four years of their life.
Starting high school is tough for some people. Moving to a new city is also tough for some people. Or me I had to deal with both. I can remember my very first day of high school, I was so nervous. I didn’t make any friends over the summer so I didn’t talk to anyone. I was pushed out of my comfort zone to talk to people and make new friends. A few months into school I received my first interim. It wasn't the greatest but , I blamed it on my transition to high school and promised that
High School Do you remember your high school days? High school for me has proved to be a learning experience and also a challenge. There are many lessons that can be learned. You can learn more about yourself, who your friends are, what kind of help is offered to you, and what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Attending High School helped build my confidence because my classmates were supportive, my teachers taught me how to study for tests, and the math tutors helped me overcome my fear of math.
I know what I am looking forward to in high school. To me, people get to do a lot more in high school than middle school. There are many activities and clubs like FFA,basketball, football, soccer, and baseball. The thing I look forward to most are all the new things I will learn. That is what I look forward to most in high school.
Life After High School I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability, because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college.
First, when reading the essay “Me Talk Pretty One Day” the way he depicted his teacher gave me a great dislike for her. She was effective as she put fear into them and the experience was like “being in the presence of a wild animal” (Sedaris 294). Her qualities were not so good. Telling things to her students such as ‘I hate you” can have hurtful effects as it did on Sedaris (294). One thing the reader does not know if the students in the class cared about using French after their time in France. They may have a hate for French because of the effect she had on them. I had a teacher who hated the side of politics that disagreed with her beliefs. I only learned in that class how great her beliefs were and the evil side that disagreed with her. I don’t remember anything else. A negative effect can have long damage on a person and what they choose to learn.
Since the courses can be boring and students know there is no real consequence if you do not turn an assignment in, they choose to hang out with friends instead of work on their assignments. I have almost fallen subject to taking advantage of it as well. I have a strong work ethic but I find myself scrambling to get all of my assignments done. I always manage to get my work turned in on time, but sometimes I just want to skip an assignment so I can get the “more important” ones done. For example, one night I had quite a bit of AP Calculus homework due at midnight. I saw all the assignments I had to do: Personal Finance, Senior Experience, and AP Chemistry. I decided to work on my AP Calculus all night because it is a course I take through Northern State University, so I prioritized it. The next day, I had to do the other assignments during first hour because my guilty conscience set in. I am very glad it did, because it is much more satisfying if you actually do your assignments and turn them in on time. Once a student slacks off once, chances are they will continue to slack off all the way to graduation
Most freshmen like me that enter the school are scared. I think the first week of the school is the easiest since there would not be a lot of homework and what you need to do is to listen to what you need for the class and know other people well in the class. But I am wrong, as soon as you get seated on your assigned seat, new teachers start to introduce themselves and start giving tons of homework. As the bell rings, I start rushing to my next class hoping that I wouldn’t be late. The first day of school is always the hardest since you don’t have any new friends and you have to sit in the cafeteria alone when it is lunch time. As day starting to go by, I found myself getting earlier and earlier to class. Talking starts to increas...
