Source: AA Roads, Major road through North Houston by Kevin Trinkle Source: AA Roads, Major road through North Houston by Kevin Trinkle The Northside of Houston sounds like a vague gesture to the compass point but in fact the Northside is another of Houston’s communities that’s growing up fast. Home to some of the biggest businesses in Houston, the Northside enjoys the home-base store of Gallery Furniture: a Houston staple, landmark, and all-around attraction. It’s the Houston theme park that is actually a premier shopping furniture store, with characters like owner Jim“Mattress Mack" McIngvale, a local favorite who can be seen daily on his sales floor, along with very exciting, exotic animals and attractions in the store itself that ensures …show more content…
I voted and two out of two of my hands agree. Nevertheless, the Northside isn’t just a maturing business mecca—it’s also a burgeoning market for affordable suburban living. City Data tells us that nearly 60% of all Houston’s homeowners have a mortgage, but that number is only 40% on the Northside. It’s also a modest family neighborhood, as the average household size is more than 3 people, compared to Houston’s average of 2.7. In fact, the percentage of family homes in the Northside is nearly 4% higher than in the Greater Houston Area at large. Considering its wealth of great businesses and the affordability of housing, it’s no wonder that the area is also a haven for recent immigrants beginning their American Dream: almost 24% of residents do not speak English well, compared with Houston’s average of only about 15%. The median household income here is more than $10k less than the Houston average, but that is perhaps owing to its

Hell’s Kitchen, being a predominantly racial background of White, has incurred many other diversified backgrounds that are making the rent of buildings rise. Thus, residents from other neighborhoods moved into Hell’s Kitchen. Since 2009 there has been 1,500 of Hispanic backgrounds living in Hell’s Kitchen. However, because gentrification and wages spurring upward, data pulled from an ACS 2015 Profile, has shown an increase in Hispanic background to 2,800 residents. Hence, most workers in the area, like Jesse Angel from Lansdowne, commute not too far from home and doesn’t need to take the
Furthermore, he attempts to dispel the negative aspects of gentrification by pointing out how some of them are nonexistent. To accomplish this, Turman exemplifies how gentrification could positively impact neighborhoods like Third Ward (a ‘dangerous’ neighborhood in Houston, Texas). Throughout the article, Turman provides copious examples of how gentrification can positively change urban communities, expressing that “gentrification can produce desirable effects upon a community such as a reduced crime rate, investment in the infrastructure of an area and increased economic activity in neighborhoods which gentrify”. Furthermore, he opportunistically uses the Third Ward as an example, which he describes as “the 15th most dangerous neighborhood in the country” and “synonymous with crime”, as an example of an area that could “need the change that gentrification provides”.

There are many gratifying factors that attract people to the state of Texas which allows it to be one of the most diverse demographic systems in the United States. The most imperative influences in Texas’ are the prosperous business settings in its major cities, the vast amount of land and rich natural resources, and the convenient central location in the United States. All of these factors are attractive to citizens throughout the states and immigrants looking to migrate into the country. These features can cause a state to have major fluctuations in its demographics in regards to race, income, and age.
One thing El Paso does not lack is Diversity. El Paso has a population of 672,538 (2012) with a demographic of 92.8(2012) white, and 81.7 %( 2012) Hispanic, leaving the rest of the minorities under 5% (quickfacts.census.gov). El Paso includes the army base Fort Bliss. Fort Bliss brings thousands of soldiers and their families from all over the world. Not only does El Paso includes Fort Bliss, but is also along the border of Mexico. With various languages, and races, El Paso is its own melting pot. Although diversity is a beautiful thing, problems arise when Spanish is a primary language spoken, and a distinct few does not. Many places in El Paso speak Spanish, and a language barrier occurs when the distinct few meets the mass. Although one being bilingual is an advantage socially, one must not forget that because the various backgrounds not all are reluctant to being bilingual in Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language, living in El Paso allows the language to flow through the city. But instead of focusing on Spanish alone, there are various people who speak Japanese, German...
Victoria has one single story mall and a few shops around the mall. The variety of stores in the mall is limited and many people actually go out of town to shop in larger cities like Houston. Even grocery stores are limited in Victoria. H.E.B. is the only major retail grocery chain in Victoria. Even though there are national chain restaurants in Victoria, the most popular restaurants in town are locally owned. Victoria residents want real, fresh Mexican food from a locally owned restaurant instead of tacos from Taco Bell or a homemade hamburger from Dairy Treat instead of a hamburger from Jack in the Box. Houston has multiple malls and malls like The Gallery that are visited by tourists and international visitors daily where people shop, eat, and even ice skate. Houston has a variety of grocery store chains and even ethnic grocery stores in areas of town like Chinatown and Denver Harbor that cater to the many cultural backgrounds of the people living in Houston. Houston also has locally owned restaurants and shops but the variety of national chain restaurants and shops surpasses those of Victoria. The differences in retail shopping and
Race and urban poverty remain the major problems pressing challenges which the United States has yet to address.Technology, race relation and global economy during the last 30 years have necessitated newly innovative analyses and policy responses. Common threads which throughout many of the studies were reviewed here is the dynamics to migration. In “When Work Disappears”, welcoming immigrants provided reasonable data which highlight the issues of ghetto poverty affecting minorities. In “ No Shame in My Game”, hispanics immigrants are factoring towards the changing demographics in parts of Harlem. Canarsie,Brooklyn, migration of African-Americans into a working/middle-class neighborhood gives conservative backlash from a liberal community.
UA’s perceived strengths are in their expansion into new product lines and their use of new technology to improve their products. They also target specific markets. However, according to industry analysts, a weakness could be that they are very dependent on US sales and also depend heavily on a limited number of distributors such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Sports Authority. Another possible weakness is that the company may be spreading their resources by going after powerful competitors like Nike, which is known to have greater resources to compete in the area of footwear where Nike dominants. As an example the company was unable to woe away Kevin Durant from Nike which could be interpreted by customers that UA is not yet in Nike’s league.
Despite having to battle discrimination and poor neighborhoods, second and third generation Mexican-Americans have made a great strife to overcome large obstacles. Mexican-Americans are finally gaining representation in city government representing the 9.6 million Mexican residents of Los Angeles. White politicians can no longer ignore Mexicans in Los Angeles, as former mayor Richard Riordan saw in the elections of 1997, in which his re-election was largely in part to the high turnout of Mexican voters in his favor. Although Capitalism still exists in the greater Los Angeles, its influence is not as great as it was fifty years ago. Los Angeles continues to serve as the breeding grounds for new cultures, ideologies, and alternative lifestyles. The pursuit of the American Dream becomes a reality for most immigrants in LA. LA is a great place to live, party, and be from. I knew little about the history of Los Angeles prior to this course, but now I am well prepared to answer the question of, “What makes Los Angeles, Los Angeles?”

This reflective essay will critically review my personal and professional skills that I am less confident in whilst in practise, which is essential for communication and developing effective relationships with others in an organization and even for personal development. The skills identified for improvement was highlighted in a skills audit for communication and effective relationships. A SWOT analysis was carried out to focus on the skills recognised, where finally an action plan was made to address how to improve the skills, what the challenges would be to develop them and how it is beneficial. The skills audit, SWOT analysis and the action plan are included as an appendices. It will also apply communication theories to
The SWOT analysis is a useful tool for identifying our personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to our plans and goals. According to a “Fuel My Motivation” article (2010), this analysis considers internal influences that can positively or negatively affect our ability to achieve our goals. The internal factors are our strengths and weaknesses. Also considered are opportunities and threats, which are external influences that can have a positive or negative impact on the ability to achieve our goals. I will share how the self-assessment instruments and self-exercises in this course have contributed to assessing and understanding my strengths and weaknesses. I will also discuss techniques I will use to leverage my strengths and understand my weaknesses. In addition, I will consider opportunities that I can take advantage of and the threats that can possibly impede my progress.
Over the years, my neighborhood has shaped me in many ways. I currently live in the Town of Cicero, and I have lived in the same neighborhood for my whole life. In my neighborhood, there are many things you can do. In the summer and spring, you can go swimming in the local pool, you can go play at the soccer & baseball field, you can go to the park,or you can go walking to the library. In the winter, there are many events at Cicero Stadium that you can go to. In my neighborhood, I would say there is an equal amount of males and females, and each household containing 4-7 family members. It is mostly hispanic residents, but a small percent are Caucasian and African-American.
