For my participant observation assignment I went to observe a class at Funky Buddha Hot House and then also to the Calvin Fitness Center. I thought that these two places would be a great comparison to each other because they are both aimed at health and fitness, but the facilities offer completely different areas of fitness to the participants. Funky Buddha Hot House is set in a small building with a main entrance and then a back room where the yoga was being practiced. The main entrance has a simple desk with a few cubbies for the people to put their coats and shoes. When first entering the main entrance there was an obvious smell that some form of an essential oil was diffusing in the room, helping to create a clean and healthy feeling environment. …show more content…
It was not hard to figure out quickly that it was hot yoga. The room was very warm and humid. There was also soft music playing in the background and the lights were slightly dimmed. Since I came into the yoga studio room right before class was supposed to start, there was about 30 different mats and people laying on the ground. Every person was stretching or laying in their own way that they found most comfortable. Everyone was silent and the atmosphere felt peaceful. I then began to notice the walls, one being colored orange, one green and two black. To me I did not get why they were all different colors, but after a while it was helpful when doing the yoga session to be able to have those different colors to focus in on. An unspoken rule that was pretty obvious when I first entered the room is to not stare at each other and to not talk. The main reason for this, I think, is because yoga tends to be a personal experience but it can be difficult when you are in a room with 30 other people. It is to be a place where you are safe to release all the tension and …show more content…
It was clear to see who was experienced and who was not with their yoga practice. Those who were most experienced would often do more complex moves without guidance and would be more inclined to do their own yoga routine despite what the teacher was saying. Others would have to get one-on-one explanations on how to get into certain positions and would have to have them modified due to lack of experience or lack of physical abilities. Depending on what a person’s mat looked like, what they were wearing and whether they brought extra yoga blocks; it was easier to figure out who appeared to have more of a higher social
Overall, I enjoyed the experience of learning more about a new culture and participating in their cultural events. My original fear of being an intruder went away when people would be friendly and introduce themselves to me. I was surprised to enter the prayer room and see that people were sitting on the floor because I am used to people having a chair to sit on. I was also nervous about sitting on the floor for a long period of time because my body is not used to it and I am not as youthful as I once was. After about thirty minutes, I started to get really uncomfortable, but I continued to sit because I did not want to be offensive by standing. I was surprised to see volunteers cooking meals for the guest because that is not something that I am used to seeing at a
In the opening of both the play and the novel we are introduced to the two main female characters which we see throughout both texts. The authors’ styles of writing effectively compare and contrast with one another, which enables the reader to see a distinct difference in characters, showing the constrictions that society has placed upon them.
Michelle Alexander’s book, The New Jim Crow, as well as Eugene Jarecki’s documentary, The House I Live In, both discuss the controversial issues surrounding the War on Drugs, mass incarceration, and drug laws. Ultimately, both Alexander and Jarecki concede that the court systems have systematically hindered growth and advancement in black communities by targeting young African Americans, primarily male, that have become entangled in drugs due to their socioeconomic status. There is a disturbing cycle seen in black underprivileged neighborhoods of poverty leading to drug use and distribution to make money that inevitably ends with the person in question landing in prison before likely repeating these actions upon their release. Both Jarecki and Alexander present their case, asserting that the effects of the War on Drugs acted as a catalyst for the asymmetric drug laws and
It is where there is no danger and nothing dreadful would be expected to take place, which is why it is called safe space. Safe space is invaded by unsafe space and makes the place threatening as something terrible is about to occur. It is by using these techniques and through creating this effect that Spielberg has succeeded in making ‘Jaws’ such a legendary film. Another example of this effect is the shower scene from ‘Psycho’ by Alfred Hitchcock. Janet Leigh who plays the main character and who was quite a famous actress in the 60’s is taking a shower and as the audience, you wouldn’t anticipate that something terrible would happen this early to the ‘main character’.
Yoga is a discipline both involving physical and mental control that originated in India. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word, "yug", meaning union and it means the joining of the individual spirit with the universal spirit. The type of yoga known as Hatha Yoga, ("Ha"- sun, "tha"-moon) is what is most commonly practiced and this yoga involves the path of the mind and body and is the most physical. There are eight limbs or steps of Hatha Yoga, the first step being the five Yamas. There are five yamas and these concern your behavior to the world.
is the “Restful Place”. During this we experience strange feelings, like the feeling of falling. You
These are the reasons why I need my special place. Without a place to go I would probably have an ulcer. I believe that everyone needs a place to go to get away from it all. It is an opportunity to explore a new and unique world all of my own. I can enjoy activities that I once got to enjoy when I was a kid, I can think through all the problems in my head, and most of all, I can get away from those people who give me the ulcer.
These environments are places that are specified for a person to help one gain vertical and horizontal thought. This is brought up in Birkerts essay when he says “because only where silence is possible can the vertical engagement take place.” (Page 35). Silence can mean something different for everyone. One person could reach vertical engagement better with background noise, but there are some people that prefer complete silence. It depends on the persons preferred environment as to where they can reach vertical engagement. People need to start taking life in and broadening their understanding by locating a place where they can experiment with horizontal and vertical thinking. The process of combining the two thinking methods can make a person more sensible about the world around them. Birkerts also states, “The only remaining Oases are churches (for those who still worship) and the office of therapists.” (Page 35). This quote displays what environments are ideal for Birkerts to reach a vertical engagement. This is very important because it shows that every individual has a different atmosphere that can help them vertically
“All I ask of that woman is that she leave me alone. But she can’t admit to herself that she makes me sick,” (II.47). This is a quote spoken by Big Daddy concerning his wife, Big Mama. Throughout the play, women become victim to unfair and misogynistic treatment from their husbands. This is mainly evident in Big Mama, Maggie and Mae’s respective relationships. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof displays this casual misogyny in its accurate depiction of how women were treated in that era, through the roles of the female characters and their relationships, as well as the treatment of the female characters.
This particularly yoga class was taught by a college student from State University named Kim. She stated that she is in training to become an official yoga instructor and that this class was the first one that she was teach at the Recreation Center. It is an exercise class that was intended to make your mind and body feel at peace as you stretch and do strength training. Yoga is meant to be very calming and spiritual. Everyone in the class appeared to be college student, there were mostly girls and few boys, only the instructor spoke during the class, and everyone made sure that they had their own personal space through the class to make sure they had enough room to move.
This gave me enough time to tend to my daily needs and get some work done. There weren't as many activities compared to the Mind Body Conference, which was a relief because too much work would have left me exhausted. The yoga activity we did was fun and well worth it. At first, yoga was intense to a point where I couldn’t keep up, but after I settled in, it became very calm and relaxing. Unlike our usual yoga practices, this one was more soothing.
This qualitative case study is an approach to research how yoga can affect the human mind in a positive way and lead to a healthy lifestyle using 2 sources one being a book called The Science Of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards by William J. Broad 2012. And the other being a private interview with a 22 year old male Yogi. This ensures that the issue is not getting explored through one side, but rather a variety of sides which allows for different inputs to be reveled and understood. There are two key approaches that help determine if yoga helps affect the human mind in a positive way. One flourished by William J. Broad (2012) which explores different factors on how yoga contributes to a healthy lifestyle and interviews fellow yogis who give there insight on the matter. And the second being a personal webcam interview conducted by the researcher ...
Focusing on these key parts of your body will keep you stable in all that you do. Tapas, or heat, is built throughout your entire yoga practice. As you move and build strength, you create heat within your body. This heat can help drive you to take your intension with you both on and off your
This week’s analysis is associated with the yoga class provided online to help with stress reduction. The first term that I came across was psychophysiology and how this principle is based on the mind and body being one and how our thinking affects all physiology. This principle was the perfect definition of yoga because yoga focuses on how the mind and body connects with each other. It gives you a sense of relaxation throughout your mind and body together. Furthermore, the yoga that was in the video was a yoga style called hatha. Which practices asana (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises). According to the book, this practices helps bring peace to the mind and body and prepare our body to do deeper exercises. The art of breathing was mentioned during the exercise and in the book. Breathing is very important when trying to unite the mind, body, and spirit. So, having slow, deep breathes was a main focused during the exercise. Another term that was used in the video was the art of stretching, which allows us to become aware of our flexibility of our muscle while moving. Lastly, the art of balance is significant because it allows us to move into the next form of position on both sides of our body. Some of the workouts pose that was mention in the textbook that I did was two knees to the chest, cobra, and head of cow. Overall, hatha
The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. Yoga training students were engaged in a four week program. They were administered tests and the beginning of the study, prior to engaging in the program, at the end of the program, after completion, and then again at a 3 month follow up. Multiple factors were assessed, however the significant and important ones which relate directly to our understanding of healthy, happiness and wellness and the course content are extremely
