Hot Weather and Cardiovascular Disease
The summer season is rapidly approaching and will likely bring some extreme conditions to the South Florida region such as higher temperatures, more intense rain precipitations, flooding, and stronger tropical storms and hurricanes as consequences of climate change. There is scientific evidence that these environmental conditions can adversely affect the cardiovascular system. Recent research performed at Jackson Memorial Hospital showed a trend to increase the number of hospital admissions for acute heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions during the hurricane season. The solar energy is usually at its strongest during this period of time. Take advantage of the more friendly early morning and evening temperatures. Remember to wear appropriate clothing. Choose loose-fitting and light-colored clothes. Don’t forget to use sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15.
• Check with your physician before you start an outdoor exercise program. Some of the heart medications can cause dehydration, affect the normal electrolyte levels, and reduce the response capacity of our body to stress.
• Take frequent rest breaks. Do not overestimate your physical strength and give yourself a break frequently. This will lower the stress on your heart. Pay careful attention to how your body reacts during those resting periods.
• Listen to your body. Your body will start sending warning signs when its capacity to deal with heat is overwhelmed. It is also important to recognize the heart attack, congestive heart failure, and stroke manifestations to look for immediate help. Alcohol makes the skin arteries wider resulting in a significant increase of the blood flow to the skin surface. This promotes heat loss and sweating. In addition, alcohol increases urine output and it can affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature when it is consumed excessively. The net effect is dehydration with a subsequent drop in your blood pressure which can compromise your brain and heart circulation.
• Drink fluid carefully. It is important to be well hydrated. However, if you have congestive heart failure, you should be careful to avoid drinking plenty of fluids. In this case, it is better to remain in a cooler environment and follow the fluid restriction and the daily weight-tracking recommended by your physician.
• Choose the right fluids. Stay away from beverages that contain high sugar content because they can cause dehydration. It is better to drink sports beverages that can replace the water and minerals you lose through sweating during hot weather
