Do we give hospital Security enough credit? They are the protection from harm for all the employees, patients, and visitors in the hospital. Now the biggest problem in hospitals is when a disaster happens is there enough security to help out or protect us? Should we hire more security? Should they train their employees to handle different situations? However how many times have hospitals had problems with their security not being able to protect their people? There are multiple factors that you have to look into. what is their job? how much do they even get paid? Have there been any past problems? What is the security policy for the security officers?

In 2012 there was a hospital shooting that left 3 people wounded. According to Mike Oliver the security officers did everything they could do to make sure their people were safe. According to Liz Moore the spokeswoman for the hospital "There is a security plan and it was implemented." However even if the plan was implemented to protect the hospital, how are the officers suppose to protect anyone from if they are not armed? If an armed man or woman barges into the hospital, why would they put their self in front of a gun without any kind of protection? If the officers had guns to protect maybe the two hospital staff members wouldn’t have gotten hurt, they could have stopped him before they even found his first victim. Are every hospital making their security officers walk around unarmed? The Baptist facilities all over the United States hire retired police officers who are able and trained in open carrying a gun. While they are allowed to open carry they also know how to not use the gun for every little thing, but trained to take down a person causing harm to others by different tactics. The different facilities need different tactics. At mental hospitals the officers cannot care a firearm based on that they are around mentally ill individuals. Because there are so many different places to cover, the hospital takes extra precautions to make sure everyone is protected. They installed physical protection such as time delay lock and alarm system, panic alarms, cameras, photo I.D. system, and IT security. Once you are a hospital employee, you give the security department the license plate on your car. You then make a badge that allows you to get into different doors that are locked for the protection of others. Also you set up different passwords that allow you into the computer system. Once you set up your passwords for the computer you are then allowed to get into every patient 's chart, however you shouldn’t do that unless you are assigned to that patient. There are certain rules that exclude you from going into other peoples chart, it is called HIPPA. HIPPA protects all of your medical information that only you are allowed to say who can know about your medical information. However if you are in a hospital setting there is a system that shows who is in your chart. If it is not a hospital personal that is assigned to you, they will get fined and may get prison time. Other than having an IT system the hospital security can patrol the hospital without even leaving the security
All health care employees will do everything within their power to protect the patient’s right to privacy. This means they will follow the HIPAA law closely. The medical facility has to protect the patient medical records and all healthcare information for the patient. If paper files are still in use at the medical facility, it should be stored, where it can be locked at close of business. Also, medical files should not be kept where individuals, other than those that need to use them, have access to them. Electronic medical records are being pushed for all facilities, large or small. The thought is less chance of someone having access that should not. There are firewalls, password use, encryption and other means of protecting electronic health records.

Risk managers are beneficial to their organizations because not only do they save money but they can also save lives. In the hospital setting where mistakes can cost someone their lives, risk managers work to develop protocols to help prevent human error. Information is gathered through the process of evidence based practice as well as guidelines in place by best practice. While there at Ivy Tech downtown campus there were two incidents which helped, me understand the polices on how Ivy Tech handles both criminal, and medical emergencies with the incidents being a disruptive student, and a student passing out temporarily.
