The Hopi American Indian tribe occupy northeastern Arizona, which is, and was their original location. Presently, the Hopi reservation is surrounded completely by the Navajo reservation. Hopi societies consist of unnamed phratries which are further divided into individual, named clans, and subdivided into households. Additionally, Hopi religion consists of cosmology and mythology. The Hopi people also rely on supernatural forces called kachinas who are essential for the manipulation and control of the elements (“Culture summary”, p. 1-5). This paper will discuss Hopi social organization, from the largest to the smallest unit, and their religious ideology.
In Hopi social organization, exogamous phratries are the largest social unit. Within the phratry are numerous matrilineal clans, and kinship is shared amongst all members of the phratry. Each clan has a distinct position within the phratry as well as a set of expected behaviors and responsibilities that are dictated by the prime clan (Connelly, p. 542-543). Furthermore, each Hopi clan share three inherent characteristics that make them synonymous with each other. First, each clan is believed to be descended from a single female ancestor who founded the clan. For this reason, every member of the clan is considered kin, and proper kinship terminology is used for all members. Secondly, each clan has its own distinctive name and clan house where all the clan’s individual sacred objects are stored. Finally, all principal properties, which includes homes and farms, are held in the name of the clan (Bradfield, p. 8).

...epresents. Kachina dolls represent this individualization and are given to young girls as gifts. The Kachina doll is given to the child by her father, in which he solicits another member of the tribe to dress up and represent the same Kachina as the doll (“Fathers, daughters, and kachina dolls”, p. 7). The dolls are then taken home and used as aids to teach the girls the names and distinct characteristics of all of the Kachinas (Colton, p. 5).
The Hopi society is a proud American Indian tribe that has been around for hundreds of years. Over the years Hopi villages have decreased in size, Christianity has emerged, sustenance practices have changed, and commercial activities have become another source of income. However, Hopi tribe members today still participate in kachina ceremonies as well as operate the same social organizations as they did aboriginally.

Early women’s clothes included a dark blue woollen blanket that was fastened above the right shoulder and tied with a belt at the waist. When Hopi girls reach womanhood, their hair was dressed in two large whorls at the side of the head in a squash blossom.
In addition, Social structure was another important factor pertaining to each tribe, Quapaw society was arranged by inherited statuses and relations that were acquired by marriage. Each person in the tribe belonged to a group of descent they received from their father’s side. People were divided into two groups sky and earth people, this also determined who a person could marry.
The Netsilik and the Chipewyan were both tribes that lived in really tough area with extreme low temperature and a lot of ice that doesn’t allow any kind of farming. These tribes rely on deer hunting a lot and the process of using the meat is handled by women. Any kind of sewing, cooking or preparation of the meat to be used is done by women, but even though women have a big role in the post hunting life in both of these communities, they have quite different roles. The social and political organization of the Basseri and the Nuer are very much different. The Basseri’s social organization is based upon that of nuclear families; they are also neolocal, meaning that upon marriage a couple starts their own nuclear family in a new tent. After marriage, in order for the couple to begin a new household, the husband usually receives part of his father’s herd and at times, if not given any animals, the husband can work and receive animals as a payment. During the spring, the nomadic tribes can be supported in large numbers in a single camp; while during the winter, camps are setup in smaller groups. The Basseri reckon descent patrilineally where inheritance is usually from father to son. A woman bestows membership rights to her own tribe or her offspring. The Basseri consider themselves one unified tribe because they are all subsumed under the authority of a single leader, the chief of all the Basseri.
Throughout ancient history, many indigenous tribes and cultures have shown a common trait of being hunter/gatherer societies, relying solely on what nature had to offer. The geographical location influenced all aspects of tribal life including, spirituality, healing philosophy and healing practices. By analyzing the Kawaiisu, a Great Basin Native tribe, I want to explore cultural wonders and observe their society as I compare an aspect of interest with that of another culture in the world, the Chuuk. This paper addresses the results of interviews, observations, and research of life in the Ottawa tribe, how they see themselves and others in society and in the tribe. I mainly focused on The Little River Band of Ottawa Indian tribe. I researched their languages, pecking order, and interviewed to discover the rituals, and traditions that they believe in. In this essay I revealed how they see themselves in society. How they see other people, how they see each other, what their values were, what a typical day was etc. I initially suspected that I would have got different responses from these questions but in reality the results in the questions were almost completely the same. I studied this topic because mostly all the people that are close to me are associated in the Ottawa tribe. I additionally love the Native American culture, I feel it is beautiful and has a free concept.
People have been living in America for countless years, even before Europeans had discovered and populated it. These people, named Native Americans or American Indians, have a unique and singular culture and lifestyle unlike any other. Native Americans were divided into several groups or tribes. Each one tribe developed an own language, housing, clothing, and other cultural aspects. As we take a look into their society’s customs we can learn additional information about the lives of these indigenous people of the United States.
There are consistent patterns or themes regarding Native American world views and the differentiation of cultural elements and society. Native Americans retained control of institutional and cultural orders against the assimilation effort because all aspects of Native American societies are interrelated, guided by the broader cultural world views. Each cultural or institutional element is, in fact, overlapped with other elements, so change in one element inevitably affects the broader cultural and social complex. While adopting to a new environment and small changes was possible in the West, where social and cultural elements are separate from each other, Native Americans were faced with conflicts and a potential, large disruption of the existing social orders.

The Hopi is an Indian tribe indigenous to Northeastern Arizona and New Mexico. They live in four different villages, those being: the Oraibi, New Oraibi, Bakavi, and Hotevilla. (Brandt, 1954: 17). The villages are located on top of mesas, surrounded by rocks and desert land. The dry land allows them to grow an abundant amount of maize, beans, squash, and primarily blue corn. Hopi men and women are both responsible for different tasks in the tribe. While the men do the farm work, hunting, religious ceremonies, and sheepherding, the women have the authority to own houses, farmlands, and cisterns. Their society is matrilineal; Hopi households revolve around the women of the family. As a result of this, children are always part of the mother’s clan (Nanda & Warms, 2012: 111, 170).

The most phenomenal thing about each individual culture though they may be similar in some ways they vary in the most impeccable manner that makes that group of people unique such as the Navajo Tribe. “The Navajo are natives of the Four Corners region (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado). The Navajo people are still living in their traditional territory today. The Navajos live on a reservation, which is land that belongs to them and is under their control. Every belief or tradition are what make the very aspect of the Navajo tribe. In traditional Navajo belief, all illness or misfortune arises from transgressions against the supernaturals or from witchcraft (Adams). Consequently, medical practice is essentially synonymous with ceremonial practice (Adams). There are particular kinds of ceremonies designed to treat illnesses caused by the patient's transgressions, by accidents, and by different kinds of witchcraft (Adams). Apart from ceremonial practices, there was formerly a fairly extensive materia medica of herbs, potions, ointments, and fumigante, and there were specialists who collected and applied these (Adams).
