The values that I hold most dearly are honesty and courage, I have upheld these values for the past 26 years of my life, and they are what I stake my pride on. Thinking back, I can thank my mom for instilling honesty within me. Whether it was punishing me for lying, or pointing out the bad things that happened to those that lied, she built the foundation for this value. When I think of honesty I don’t just hold this value to the big ticket items, it encompasses the little ones as well. Being honest on my taxes is just as important as telling the DMV my actual weight. One story that I always refer back to is when I first enlisted in the military. At the time my recruiters wanted me to lie about a medical condition that I had been diagnosed with, and I foolishly went along with it. However, this value was not taught to me by any person, but rather life itself. When I used to think of courage I thought of the brave knight standing up to the monster, but I now have a vary different outlook on the topic. While serving I have learned that courage isn’t always seen as a heroic action, sometimes it’s standing up for what’s right. While stationed at my last command I served as a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocate. It was my job to assist those who had been sexually assaulted and help them report what had happened if they choose to do so. I was truly amazed at the courage that these sailors had in coming forth about their attackers. Often times they fear reprisal from the command or from their shipmates, but the majority of them had the courage to come forth and report the incident.
