Personal fulfillment is the achievement of life goals which are more important to an individual in contrast to the goals of society, family and pursuit of happiness. Imagine waking up one morning and finding that your own self-fulfillment goal has been achieved. Now think, did it positively affect just yourself or were others in society also affected? And does it really matter who else was affected, whether positively or negatively, if it’s your own “personal” fulfillment? A great philosopher known as Mencius once said “Don’t do what should not be done, and don’t desire what should not be desired. Hitler’s personal fulfilment was to be completely in charge and to have everything go his own way. His motivation behind this was greed and power. He reached his goal but by doing so, he hurt and killed many others along the way. For this example, the outcome was bad for society but beneficial for Hitler’s own personal fulfillment. All the power and greed went to Hitler’s head, influencing him to become hungry for more power. Another example would be Martin Luther King Jr. King’s goal was to be heard and to make change. His motivation for this was to better society as a whole and to receive more rights. King reached his goal of personal fulfillment and helped others in the making. Both wanted to make a change and both did. But they differed when it came to how it affected the people around them. Comparing the two goes to show that one could reach personal fulfillment but also positively affect and better society while doing so. Of course, there are some negatives when thinking about personal fulfillment because not everyone is a good person and not everyone thinks the same way, causing possible negative outcomes or scenarios. People have different beliefs and outlooks on life and this shows when comparing the two
