INTRODUCTION
The Indian Economy includes a majority of people working in the informal or unorganised sector. Unorganised sector is characterised by the absence of structure in employment. Unorganised sector involves work, workplace and workers. The work, worker and workplace in the unorganised sector are characterised by Denial of rights of the workers, bad working conditions, temporary work, hazardous work, no terms of employment, no job security etc. According to the Economic Survey of 2007-2008, India’s working class includes 93% of people employed in the unorganised sector and the people who are self-employed. According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the workforce in India is divided into four categories on the basis of Occupation, Nature of Employment, Especially

The workers have limited or usually no educational base or other skills. As, the workers are not educated and skilled or trained they are forced to accept all the terms and conditions of the contractors. Whereas, of the workers are skilled, educated and trained then they can demand their own wages and bargain with the contractors for their work. The workers can also get their bargaining power if they collect together and form unions or associations, but the workforce is so scattered and defragmented that they cannot collect together and fight for their
Labor’s rights, this issue have been bothering many worker since the 19th century and can still be a problem today. As John L. Lewis has said in his speech “I repeat that labor seeks peace and guarantees its own loyalty, but the voice of labor, insistent upon its rights, should not be annoying to the ears of justice or offensive to the conscience of the American people” (John L. Lewis), which under his words meant that labor is something that can be done right and peacefully but it needs rules and benefits that come with those rules which labor asks for and when labor asks for those rules and benefits it shouldn’t be taken like some annoying kid’s demands but more as something that needs to be done and done with a right mind set. Labor today consists of a man or woman going to work, working their hours, and finally getting paid for those hours at the end of the week, at least a minimum of $7.50 an hour (United States Department of Labor), but before it wasn’t like that before many workers would get paid very poorly even thought they would work for a lot of hours and they wouldn’t get benefits from their work or safety when working such as in the mines like the mine workers, but one man stood up for them and his name was John L. Lewis (John Llewellyn Lewis, Encyclopedia).
The working conditions at the time for the majority of laborers was deplorable. Businessmen would take advantage of the laborers and force them to work long hours with severely little
The factory workers are stuck in a complicated position where they are taken advantage of and exploited. While “exploitation occurs on any level” these factory workers do not have the opportunity to exploit others because they are the ones being exploited (Timmerman 7). Tension is created between the corporations, factory owners and workers, because the factory owners force the workers into harsh labor and intense working conditions that they were told
This therefore creates an incentive to keep costs low and selling prices high which results in instability making these workers further reliant on the capitalist who buy their labor. This is a form of oppression and domination of the workers because the boss profits based on the exploitation of workers. Once these workers are being alienated, dominated, and oppressed there is a progression that happens. They are first alienated from their own labor; they are a part of just one piece of the labor that goes into making the product. This makes their jobs menial and tedious, the workers do not find joy or fulfillment in their jobs and no longer see their labor in the product. They are also alienated from one another, in this system people are placed in competition with one another and therefore they only look after themselves to make sure they get the best benefits. They are then alienated from their product labor, they work for a product that does not matter to them and that they have no passion for. The last form of alienation is that they are alienated from themselves; by being apart of this system, it does not allow us to contribute
Change is something that human have to face often, yet it is still very hard for us to adapt to it. We can, in turn, agree that change is not easy (Jacobs 2002). Occupational therapy has been thought a lot of changes which give rise to new treatment methods, new approaches and a better to communicate with the patients. Below is an analysis of the changes that have been made in the occupational therapy field and their outcomes.
It is of paramount consideration that social workers are conscious of, aware and sensitive to the cultural demands of their clientele. This is because culture is a pivotal factor upon which a great deal of conduct, norms, social connections and mindsets of clients revolve. For social workers there is need to understand and appreciate how cultural traditions influence relationships with a diverse panorama of client needs and demands. This literature review seeks to create a foundation regarding the facts stated above through filtering and analysis of relevant and interesting research studies and works by previous authors. This review of literature focuses on how social workers develop or maintain cultural competence following graduation from Masters of Social Work Program. It aimed at providing answers for further research regarding how social workers maintain cultural competence post graduation. In addition, this literature review seeks to consider that social workers are not enhancing their cultural awareness post graduation as mandated by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) code of ethics.
My results for my high school career quiz displayed many careers that I did not believe were for me, however there was one that I had never heard of that sparked my interest, Occupational Therapy. At the time, I had no idea what this career consisted of, but as time went by and I participated in various volunteering opportunities and shadowed several therapists, I began to realize that this career really intrigued me. Occupational therapists assist individuals across the entire lifespan in participating in daily living activities. They work with individuals with physical and developmental disabilities, those who have previously sustained an injury and need to regain their abilities, and the elderly population who may lose the abilities to perform certain tasks. This profession contains many important responsibilities that involve aspects of social psychology including evaluating the abilities of the patient, increasing independence of patients with
As a social worker, I have been able to use my skills I have learned in the field and my college education. I have values, beliefs, and ethics that I have used to center my social work career around. I also acknowledge as a social worker, I cannot push my values, beliefs, and ethics onto others. Every person does not share the same values, beliefs and ethics.
India's general public has been impacted by an exceptionally solid standing framework before, which kept numerous individuals from openly picking what work or business to enter. This has changed and urban districts have a tendency to be more liberal concerning starting cast alliance than the rustic ranges. The extent that the mechanical environment is concerned,
Furthermore, laborers do not have relationships with one another but rather a relationship based on competition among the other laborers for wages. The laborer views other workers as competition for accumulating the maximum wages provided by the bourgeoisie, and not as true human
Contracting out affects workers in different regions. The is spread to different sectors of companies and different lines of work. In previous year it was a massive problem for migrants in the construction sector especially. Precarious work used to be a problem affecting only certain types of jobs. These jobs involved food catering, security, cleaning, transport, and maintenance men or women.
The National Association of social workers (2008) defines the unifying primary mission or purpose of social work as “enhancing human well-being and helping meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.” (Dubois & Miley, 2014).
The aim of Social Work is to alleviate the conditions of people suffering from social deprivation with in the community. It promotes social change and engages in problem solving to enable service users reach their full potential (Graham, 2007). The British history of social work in intellectual disability can be traced back to the 1913 Mental Deficiency Act (Gilbert, 1985, p.59) where the justification of institutional care and community control is outlined in section 17 of the Act. Occupational social work developed after the formation of the Charity Organisation Society (CSO) in 1869. The concept of social work developed by the CSO was a direct extension of a social theory concerning the causes of social unrest and disadvantage.
... 12 million child workers in India. They are employed in textile factories, roadside restaurants (dhabas), hotels, domestic workers, in mines and so on. They are even seen in doing hazardous work in firecrackers and matchstick industries. This is not a new scenario of India. The Government has been taking proactive steps to tackle this problem through strict enforcement of policies and laws. The root cause of this problem is said to be poverty which is a big hindrance in the way of development. India Government introduced a law in 2006, where no child under 14 years of age should work. But this law came into force in 2008. As per the said definition of underdevelopment, it can be said that there may be many factors leading to the developing country to be called as underdeveloped but the economy is something which captures the whole argument in any factor discussed.
In the early 1900s industrial accidents were commonplace in this country; for example, in 1907 over 3,200 people were killed in mining accidents. At this time legislation and public opinion all favored management. There were few protections for the worker's safety. Today's industrial employees are better off than their colleagues in the past. Their chances of being killed in an industrial accident are less than half of that of their predecessors of 60 years ago. According to National safety Council (NSC), the current death rate from work-related injuries is approximately 4 per 100,000, or less than a third of the rate of 50 years ago. Improvements in safety up to now have been the result of pressure for legislation to promote health and safety, the steadily increasing cost associated with accidents and injuries, and the professionalization of safety as an occupation. When the industrial sector began to grow in the United States, hazardous working conditions were commonplace. Following the Civil War, the seeds of the safety movement were sown in this country. Factory inspection was introduced in Massachusetts in 1867. In 1868 the first barrier safeguard was patented. In 1869 the Pennsylvania legislature passed a mine safety law requiring two exits from all mines. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was established in 1869 to study industrial accidents and report pertinent information about hose accidents. The following decade saw little progress in the safety movement until 1877, when the Massachusetts legislature passed a law requiring safeguards for hazardous machinery. In 1877 the Employers' Liability Law was passed. In 1892, the first safety program was established in a steel plant in Illinois, in response to the explosion of a flywheel in that company.
