Hip Hop Culture: Rapped By DJ Herc

Hip hop is a culture that started as an urban movement in the 1970s but was later changed to an art movement. It was developed by famous hip hop artist DJ Herc when he first started playing it in the Bronx. While hip hop does consist of many sub sections,there are only four which are primary. These four include: rapping, DJing, discoing, and jazz. Jazz is actually one of the first subsections to be created in the Hip Hop culture. Jazz started off as a verse style but was later transitioned into a form of egotism. From then on , many more subsections came to be, including rapping. In the book Evolution of Hip Hop Culture the author talks about how “Hip hop music educates people from several different perspectives and raises many social issues. Hip Hop is a channel for people to speak freely about their views on political or social issues and by doing so, it engages teenagers to become concerned and aware of these issues” (Devos 115). This is important because it makes the youth aware of the world around them and the conditions they face in society. Additionally, allowing individuals to discuss about social issues enables them to discuss ways in which they can make a positive change in society. Some issues that Hip Hop has brought up and created awareness for are, the importance of education, embracing individuality, and racial discrimination. Hip hop also is a reflection of our mental and physical minds, it is a comfort place for both the artists and listeners who may be struggling with the same issues. In general music can bring people together, however only Hip hop demonstrates the struggles and difficulties in life that the youth can relate on. In the article Hip Hop with reality, the author states “ Since the release of Grandmaster Flash "The Message" in 1982, Hip Hop music has adopted a more political tone” (Villanueva 5). Hip hop music is more than any other genre. All in all it is a genre that has alerted both private and public citizens of the plight of the lower classes in urban areas among other issues.
