Many students wake up before the sunrises to begin their commute to school, and then spend several hours sitting in class listening to instructions and then return home where hours of homework are waiting to be completed, such as; writing, reading, studying, and many other assignments. The evening often seems like it doesn’t contain enough hours to complete the tasks at hand, leaving students overwhelmed. Gaining a high school education paired with the drive to excel creates enough anxiety, especially when not given the necessary time needed to complete assignments, and this doesn’t even consider the experience of students under additional stressors such as taking higher level classes, playing sports, having jobs or home responsibilities. …show more content…

“As early as the 1950s, educational reformers were proposing alternatives to the traditional school day schedule to maximize benefits for students and teachers” (Queen & Isenhour, 1998). A block schedule allows teachers more time to improve and implement learning styles and “Students benefit from a multitude of instructional strategies used to address the variety of ways in which they learn.”(Rettig & Canady, 1996; Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement, 1995). Some think there is greater advantage to the traditional fifty five minute schedule because it equals a total of one hundred and sixty five hours during the school year where a block schedule only contains one hundred and thirty five hours of eighty minutes in the classroom, but many studies show that students benefit from a less fragmented schedule where students can receive uninterrupted instruction. “Teachers found the use of cooperative learning essential to the high school's move to a block schedule of four eighty-minute periods. Both faculty and students felt the cooperative format made a significant difference in realizing the potential of the double-sized periods. The block schedule allowed the high school to gain an additional week-and-a-half of instructional time over the school year.” explains the American Association of School Administrators as they prove that a block schedule should be implemented
Extended class periods and block scheduling will improve student’s grades and can diminish their stress level significantly. A normal day in block scheduling consists of only four classes a day, alternating each day. These classes would last 120 minutes each, with the same 5 minute passing periods in between classes. This scheduling gives teachers more time to explain their lesson. It also gives students time to recover from the late nights due to sports and other activities because they only have four classes a day. Their homework for these classes isn’t due for another day, so they don’t have to stress over getting it done. 120 minute classes combined with blocked scheduling increases the amount of time teachers have for instruction and will overall increase the student’s knowledge, in turn, raising their grades.
On average, high school students receive about 3.5 hours of homework each night and elementary school students are getting about three times the amount that is recommended, which is ten minutes per grade, so 10 minutes for 1st grade and 50 minutes for 5th grade. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school student would be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste. This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their schools do start later.
The phrase “year-round” scares students and parents alike. Some argue that students attending school year-round will get so burnt out that the new schedule would be counterproductive. However, the term “year-round” is misleading. Students would not go to school non-stop twelve months out of the year. Instead, students would attend in blocks separated by short but frequent breaks (Hapka). The National Education Association gives insight to the block system:
Year round school or the modified school year is a rearrangement of the traditional school year to provide the students with continuous learning throughout the school year. Students receive the same amount of instructional time as a traditional school. In year round schools, the instructional time is balanced without of school time more evenly. (Winter, 2005) The National Association for Year Round Schooling defines it as “a schedule which contains no break lasting longer than eight weeks-schools are able to keep their students in constant learning mode, and are able to use the intersessions between periods of schooling to address the problems of students who are falling behind.” (St. Gerard, 2007, pg. 57) There are three common tracks of year round schooling. They are the single track, multitrack, and extended year. The single track is scheduled throughput the year into intersessions which allow time for enrichment or red-mediation. The multitrack is used to help schools reduce overcrowding. The school divides the teachers and students into groups of an equal size. Each group has its own schedule. One group is on intercession while the other is in school. The extended year increases the amount of time spent in schools from 180 days to as many as 240 days a year. (McGlynn, 2002)
Having block scheduling is one of the main concerns of the Aldine Independent School District. Block scheduling is when students have half of their classes one day and the other half the next. There has been some complaints about how block scheduling decreases students’ focus, but there has also been many compliments about how it improves students’ education. Michael D. Rettig, President of School Scheduling Associates, states that more schools are considering block scheduling and more than thirty percent of schools in the country already have it [bandwagon]. The Aldine Independent School District has made the reasons remarkably clear as to why they have switched to block scheduling and they are: better test scores, better grades, and improvement of teacher-student interaction.

Back in the early ages, the idea of year-round school would be thought as completely insane, because the farming families depended on their children to be home during harvest time. Now in modern times, the term year-round school is becoming more and more common in the United States of America. Slowly the schools are changing the way they teach, from giving the students a long three month break to a shorter one month break during the summer. The change of America’s high schools to the year-round schedule benefits both the schools and the students because they still get breaks throughout the school year, the children are less likely to forget information, the children would have more time with the teachers to learn, and the parents would not have to pay for childcare during the long summer break.

Academic excellence is strongly emphasized along with respect for individual differences and flexibility of programming where needed. Each student is challenged to grow and develop to the highest reaches of his or her ability. As methods of reaching those goals, in 1997 the high school initiated a 4x4 block schedule after preparing the staff in a variety of teaching techniques and seeking support and approval from the community. The high school also pursued a relationship with Seton Hall University and is part of the Project Acceleration concurrent enrollment program that allows students to receive college credit while taking their high school courses. The middle school moved to a modified block schedule in September 2006, with an eight period schedule four days ( M, T, W, F) and a block schedule Thursday. This schedule allowed for three core classes to meet in an extended block every other week. In September 2009, the school added Tuesday as a block schedule day, allowing all six core classes to meet in an extended block each week. An advisory Program, providing each student with a staff member advisor who meets with students three times a week at the beginning of the day, was added to the schedule in September 2007. Additionally, a Thursday activity period each week is dedicated to student-initiated problem-based learning with a strong service learning component.
High school students were surveyed about what negative effects they experience when they feel overwhelmed, both in school and at home. “40% of students say they [lost] interest in school and learning” altogether and “35% said they participated less in extracurricular” activities (Powell). Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. They should be able to have enough time in the afternoon to distract themselves with other healthy activities which ensure the development of new skills and is also relaxing. Many students’ everyday activities may also be affected. Students who like to read or do their homework in the library or just spend time in any other public place will be affected since they will have less time in them because of later release times. Today, many students report more anxiety due to stress than child psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. In a 2006 survey of 1,300 students at a public high school in Needham, Massachusetts found that 58% of the students surveyed reported between a great deal of stress and extreme stress due to homework (Bennett and Kalish). Many students in today’s time, have so many things to do that it is difficult for them to come home, only to have to finish five to six hours of homework. This, with the added effects of after school activities and technology, only adds to the stress that is put on students.
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age.
