High School Students Society has been stereotyping people since the beginning of time, from stereotyping groups to stereotyping them individually. With stereotypes comes misconceptions, which society is superb at. Making stereotypes and misconceptions have become everyday activities, that people do without realizing half of the time. They have become as easy as brushing your teeth every morning. These statements can force people into believing them as truths, when in reality majority of the people being labeled need a better understanding. High school students are stereotyped on a daily plainly for being in high school, but are also stereotyped from within; they are perceived in a way that completely disregards their true emotions and behavior. These truths are then exaggerated to a point where the group, or person, is now categorized by that stereotype. When stereotypes are built, so are depictions of those being labeled and they are now known for these melodramatic truth that someone had come up with. Humankind has, over the years, developed a theory that everyone needs to be grouped according to their lifestyles, characteristics, habits, interests, gender, and even on race; people go the extra mile by making comments towards these groupings. One case of a stereotype is saying that all teenagers are rebels and disrespectable. Despite that being true for some teenagers, it is considered a stereotype because it labels a whole group. As stated in “But Stereotypes are Based on Truth Aren’t They,” Lenora Billings-Harris explains, “A stereotype is a generalized statement or belief applied to everyone in a group, as though the entire group is the same. Any belief or characteristic, applied to an entire group, immediately makes it invalid because no characteristics are held by everyone in the group”(1).
