Over 70% of kids in the United States quit competitive sports by age 13 annually because of the pressure competitive sports bring. Many people debate over the topic that competitive sports are beneficial to kids. Organized team sports, although played by many, can cause harm to children at a young age. By playing competitive sports many kids are exposed to the pressure, whether it be from coaches, parents, or even other players. Many adolescents feel large amounts of pressure from competitive sports which can affect them physically and psychologically.
By playing competitive sports the pressure that kids experience can result in fatal physical injuries. When one is focused on the end result and how to win, the pressure can cause them to overthink the game and affect how he/she plays. The pressure that sports bring can discourage children causing them to experience mental breakdowns or even thoughts of quitting. The text Pros and Cons of Sports competition at the highschool level, states, “While any physical activity and sport can provide teens with incredible benefits and opportunities, parents and teenage athletes must also be aware of the potential downfalls of competition and athleticism. As teens engage in competitive events and team sports, their exposure to peer-pressure and anxiety may increase with the need to win.” (Grace Chen) Based on the information found in the article, the feeling of losing can be stressful to many after being exposed to the pressure of winning.
