Romeo and Juliet is a play filled with many hidden meanings that are shown through the characters action and words or have to inferred from these things. The play also has many themes such as love, anger or regret, but also more subtle ones, like the one talked about in this essay, understanding and more specifically how one should not speak about things that they don't understand. This theme is one of the less emphasized ideas in the play, but it is equally as important as many of the other larger ideas in the, like the ones mentioned above. This idea of understanding is significant not just to the play as a whole, but also to myself and everyone else.
The play Romeo and Juliet is filled with different messages and meaning that are shown all throughout the play, one of these messages is perfectly described by ROMEO: “Thou canst not speak of that thou dost not feel” (3.3.67-72). This quote is a little hard to understand at first unless you are familiar with old english, but to paraphrase it says: you can’t speak about things that you don’t feel. This message is similarly stated many different times during the play, but I will focus of this one instance because I find

that the wording connects most to the message the play is trying to convey. This idea of people speaking of or saying they understand something that they have never felt is a constant for Romeo during the play, but there are a couple of parts in which it is most evident. In the specific scene that this quote comes from Romeo has just found out from the Friar that his punishment for killing Tybalt is banishment, but not death. Romeo is devastated and says that banishment is even worse than death because everyone will be able to see Juliet while he will not; the Friar says that banishment is much better than death because he is still alive and things can still change. Romeo is angry at the Friar because he has never felt love yet he still tries to console and comfort Romeo, but Romeo still knows the Friar is right. This quote is also significant to the play as a whole, the idea of love is one of the main themes of the play and even so the many people of the play that have never felt love or true love still try to provide advice or make decisions for the people that are in love. This quote connects not just to the scene that the quote comes from, but also to the entire play and to the many messages throughout it. This quote applies not only to the play and the scenes within it, but also to me and my life thus far. I have lived a fairly short life so far, but even in the 15 years that I have been alive I have had many situations and experiences that connect to this quote: one example of this is my time as a programmer and specifically one instant in the past with one of my old teachers. I was in a computer programming class in which we were supposed to be learning a coding language called Python, but the teacher decided to switch to an oversimplified drag and drop language called Scratch. I got through almost the whole semester without any trouble and asked the teacher if I could learn Python on my own during the class, she agreed and I started learning it with a friend. The teacher said we should make our final program in Python, so we did while all of the other groups did the final project in Scratch, we spent about 50 hours collectively on our project and were feeling pretty good about it. We turned it in and were hoping for 100% because of how much effort we put in, other groups had finished their projects in less than 2 hours. When we got it back we were shocked to find out that she had given us a B- on the project and while we still had a solid A for the class we wanted to know why she had given us such a bad grade. We asked her and since she had never programmed in Python before said that we had just whipped together something and that would not be acceptable in her class, we tried to show her how much work it was, but she upheld her belief that we slacked on the project. She graded our project and talked about it without even knowing about the coding language or the effort we put in, just like when the Friar commented on Romeo's banishment. This quote is relevant to the play and to my life, but it is also relevant to everyone and teaches everyone a lesson about what they should comment on and judge people on.
Many people have fallen into the trap of comment on something they don’t understand, for example, telling someone who is bad at math that they should just study more, when you have never had trouble with math. I have fallen into this trap quite a few times, just like everyone else, and will probably fall into it more times in the future, but everyone should try their best to not do this and try to be more understanding. Altogether this quote shows a life lesson that everyone will encounter at least once in their lives and one that is generally overlooked in the grand scheme of things, but also one that is very important to
everyone.
William Shakespeare, the author of many various forms of writing, was born in Stratford upon Avon, in 1564. He wrote plays and sonnets alike, and occasionally combined the two. “Romeo and Juliet” was an example of this as many sonnets are used in it so as to display their love. This play was perhaps the shortest one that he ever wrote, and it is a tragedy that still warms the hearts of people today. It is, no doubt, amongst the most well known plays by him, and is greatly enjoyed by children and adults alike. In this essay, I will identify the various techniques used in this work of art, explicitly focusing on dramatic irony and foreshadowing.
“Don’t waste your love on someone who doesn’t value it.” In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare exposes the life of two young lovers in the Renaissance period fighting for something they cannot live without; each other. Although fate takes its toll, the everlasting feud between two families, conditional love by parents, and the irresponsibility’s of father and mother like figure are the main causes in the death of Romeo and Juliet. The idea of love is something that is valued in this play from many different aspects of characters, lines, and scenes. Shakespeare leaves the minds of readers soaring over not why it happened, but who was at fault.
Who would be willing to die for their loved ones? Romeo and Juliet would and did. Romeo and Juliet’s love and death brought two families together who could not even remember the origin of their hate. When the parents saw what their children's love for each other, they realized that their fighting had only led to suffering and insoluble conflict. Romeo and Juliet loved each other to an extent that they killed themselves rather than live apart. They did it with no hiatus. Juliet says before she kills herself, “O happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die.”( 5, 3, 182-183) demonstrating how she would rather die than not be with him.
At the start of Act 1 Scene 1 Sampson and Gregory start the scene off
Ambiguity of Juliet's Character in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Romeo and Juliet, is a story of hatred wounds reopened through the love of between rival families, where only death will bring a finale. This story of these town teenagers is set in the 1500s, obviously the culture and general behaviour was very different, and this has a significant effect on the way the story is acted out by the characters. Today, we expect children and teenagers to debate arguments, make decisions for themselves, and be rebellious to their parents and authority in general. But, in the 1500s this was far from normal behaviour. The parents in traditional rich families would control the children in their everyday activities – although the sons were controlled to a lesser extent.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about two lovers who are from two disputing families, and their eventual suicides. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony throughout the play to create tension for the audience and foreshadow the ending. Dramatic irony is when the words or actions of characters in a story have a different meaning to the reader than to the characters. This is because the reader knows something that the characters do not. Romeo and Juliet’s death could have been prevented if the characters in the story weren’t so ignorant of their situations, and often times the reader recognizes this.
“I neither know it, nor can learn of it” (Act 1 Scene 1, Line 143). This quotation proves that Romeo is being secretive about his troubles, therefore placing difficulty in identifying them. He is in this state because he is infatuated with Rosaline. relative of the Capulet‘s) but she will not return his affections as she has sworn to stay chaste.
Because of miscommunication, Romeo and Juliet’s parents are not informed of their teenager’s conflicts, therefore making them useless. An example of miscommunication between the adults and adolescents is when Romeo locks himself in his room depressed. Lord Montague is deeply concerned about Romeo’s seclusive ways, saying he is “to himself, so secret”. Lord and Lady Montague want to “learn from whence his sorrows grow” so they can help him with his troubles (I.i.155-163). Because Romeo alienates himself from his parents, not telling them he is heartbroken from Rosaline, his parents do not know why he is upset. If he would have had told his parents of his recent heartbreak, the Montague’s could have helped him resolve this issue. However, this does not happen and the parents end up being futile. While it is not the Montague’s fault that Romeo does not ...
The environment surrounding the star-crossed lovers in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet can influence audiences who may interpret the scenes in different ways. The audience can be greatly affected in their interpretation of the story by the mise-en-scene, costuming, and the hidden symbolic meaning. This great piece of literature was edited in two unique and intriguing forms, one Zeferelli directed which was filmed in 1968, and the modern version produced in 1996. The different scenes throughout the length of the party were the most influential to me in that I saw how different these movies were directed, and the different meaning I experienced from watching these movies. Focusing on the environment of the scenes and the costuming helped me in my interpretation, because I found hidden symbolism from these two qualities.
“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name;” (Shakespeare, 536). In the book, ‘Romeo and Juliet”, by William Shakespeare there is a deeper meaning that Shakespeare is trying to portray other than parents cannot control their children’s hearts. He is trying to portray that a name is only a name and it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things and that even with a different name that person will still be the same person they have always been. Shakespeare is using the characters: Juliet, Romeo, Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse to get this message across to the reader or the viewer.
By illustrating the negative effects of deception in relationships in the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows how important honesty is in
The prince’s speech in Romeo and Juliet was given after a fight broke out in the market between the rich families by the name of Montague’s and Capulet’s. The Prince said during his speech “Your lives shall forfeit the peace in my city” Is a bit of foreshadowing and how someone might have to pay their life for taking away the peace of his city. Later on in the story Capulet gets killed by Romeo, therefore he will have to pay his life because he once again disturbed the streets of Verona. Romeo was lucky enough to have kept his life, but he is banned from Verona for the rest of his life. “Three civil brawls bred of an airy word,” Meant that this isn’t the first time that the two families have fought. “Bred of an airy word” the two sides had a great battle just because of a few words. Shakespeare’s also like to use Iambic pentameter to show that speakers are of a higher class. It means that there does not have to be a rhyme scheme. Shakespeare does play with the word he uses so every line has the same amount of syllables. There are also different stresses on each word to kind of give ...
