The short film, Hidden Figures was an extraordinary piece of work that contains many important themes.This biographical drama that is based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterfly, is absolutely unique to the USA. The film is about three brilliant African-American women at NASA, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson who serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history. This NASA headquarter’s building is located only in Washington D.C, United States of America. This clearly illustrates the main setting of this film. In addition, Mary Jackson one of the main characters of this film ends the first scene by stating the year and location, 1961, Virginia. They also assist in illuminating the story’s main theme about racism and inequality during the 1960s. The first example is clearly portrayed by the first scene, which involves three women trying to get to their office at NASA however it seems that their destination can’t be reached due to a car trouble. A few minutes later, a police officer approaches them, and questions them, surprisingly he is amazed by their occupation and offers to escort them to work. This strong irony starts to lead the story, in which . Mary takes the opportunity to say, “Three negro women are chasing a white police officer down the highway in Hampton, Virginia, 1961. This only happens once in a blue moon which makes it extremely ironic because during those days, it is usually the other way around, a white man chasing after coloured people. Another scene of irony directs the story in the right path, Mr. Harrison is enraged by the fact that Katherine has to run half a mile (800 meters) to use the coloured bathroom and has to run back to her work. As a result, he violently takes down the sign of the bathrooms which puts a stop its racial segregation and replies “Here at NASA we pee the same pee”.
