One aspect of a friendship is mutual reliance. Friends are there for support and to assist an individual in overcoming obstacles. In How to Train Your Dragon, both Hiccup and Toothless, needed the other support more at different times. Toothless needed not only Hiccup's support, but his empathy, when experimenting with tails. It was essential for Hiccup to have Toothless's support, when he lost his leg. Toothless's and Hiccup's relationship emerge as a interdependent relationship, but it blossoms into a friendship. By depending on each other, they discover who they are and what they are capable of. In the beginning of the movie, Hiccup is seen as an outcast. Toothless is rare type of dragon, so the vikings have little information on them. The dragon handbook states that if someone comes in contact with a night fury, then they should kill it. The handbook includes a picture of every other dragon, except the night fury. Both Hiccup and Toothless, are portrayed as invisible. Hiccup is scared to start dragon training and struggles to impress his father. He is different from the other vikings; he has a smaller stature, has never killed a dragon and is scared of dragons. At the end of the movie, Hiccup loses his leg. His leg replacement fits Toothless's tail replacement. They both become mutually dependent on the other. Toothless can not fly without Hiccup and Hiccup can not ride another dragon. The prosthetic leg fits with Toothless's tail replacement. Hiccup discovered that is a Viking, but not in the traditional sense. Toothless discovers he is a deadly dragon. Together they destroy the main dragon, and become heroes. This becomes a crucial moment in their relationship, because it is the epitome of their relationship. They find their identities, but not without the help of the
