As a woman of color who was born in West Africa where culture and tradition have significant roles in the lives of the individual, heterosexuality is the singular model of sexuality accepted among the population. As a result, growing up it was not difficult for me to discern and acknowledge my sexual identity as heterosexual. I observed heterosexuality in everyday lives and it was the normal and natural identity which for me did not have to be questioned. Social practices such as the paying of a dowry or traditional marriage, virginity, wedding are compulsory rituals associated with my gender. Not only are these identities recommended and conditioned from every woman in the culture, but they are also seen as prestigious things that elevate family’s status. As a woman, I was aware of all those social practices that have to be fulfilled in my life. If I do not fulfill them my gender will not be respected and valued by the rest of the female society in my culture. In this paper, heterosexuality will encompass a variety of meanings. I will be considering sexual attraction, cultural norms, religion, values system, and institution to be the fundamental practices that shape my identity.
Community environment shaped my sexual identity. In my community heterosexuality is seen as power. I was brought up in a royal family where my grandfather, a king, had nine wives, thirty-five kids with over one hundred grandchildren According to the royal beliefs; it is considered that having multiple wives and children are signs of power and wealth. In the concept institutionalized heterosexuality, she talks about how normative heterosexuality captures everyday life. She mentions that heterosexuality status accrues privilege and it is regarded as natural and normal. The reading made me reflect on how I identify myself as a woman and heterosexual. We could clearly see that social forces such as sexual attraction, cultural norms, religion, values system, and institution have shaped my identities.
