According to Sharon Jayson of USA Today, just 20% of Americans have performed heroic deeds (USA Today). Those actions require the heroes to possess certain qualities. But what are those qualities? Comics say that heroism is about valor, similar to a knight who slays a dragon or Superman. On the other hand, the real heroes in our society are folks who go about their lives, not even thinking that they are being heroic, even though they are. It is just the smaller things that tend to go unnoticed. These people do things everyday, like help an old woman across the street, that require a certain positive personality and awareness of those around them. Some of the most heroic qualities are under the surface, such as being unselfish, confident, kind-hearted, and understanding. In other words, heroism is always being selfless, brave, and not fearful.

According to Oliver Stone, “heroes are everyday, common people. Most of what they do goes unheralded, unappreciated” (64). It shows that a true hero, although they possess admirable qualities, may not be noticed for small acts of heroism. The important thing is how performing a heroic action makes a difference in society; whether it makes someone’s day brighter or it even saves their life. That 20% of Americans who are heroic need to inspire the other 80% to be unafraid and unselfish. Selflessness and bravery are as vital in heroism as a heart in a human, while fear and weakness are like the deadly cancer.
