In the book, Henry Spearman went to a store to buy his wife a paring knife for Christmas. His daughter questioned why he would buy a knife instead of a bracelet because the bracelet would give her mother more satisfaction. Then, Henry rejected her suggestion to get the bracelet and went into explaining how the paring knife would give greater utility than the piece of jewelry. Spearman suggested “A new paring knife might save her an average of five minutes a day, or possibility a half hour a week (Jovens 55), which explains the gains his wife would receive, maximizing her utility. She doesn’t need to spend all her time cutting oranges when she could be using that time for something else which opportunity cost. Spearman’s wife has more time for
romance now than she would with an old paring knife. Another example of the utility theory in the book is when the psychology professor explains reasons why people do certain things. She concludes that most of the time it is to maximum their utility. People make choices on what makes them happiest and others can tell because of the choice that they made. She states “Economics merely says that people do what they want” (Jovens 22). This is tautology to her because it is merely a universal truth. This goes to show that applying economic theories are logical expressions and thoughts. But Spearman argues that something’s can have a rapid diminishing marginal utility, which means there’s hardly any satisfaction. Consequently people
Cotton Mather and John Woolman were two men who had very passionate ideas for the slaves. “Negro Christianized” written by Cotton Mather was an appeal to the slave owners to convert their slaves to Christianity. He primarily focuses on the idea that slaveholders should treat the slaves with dignity and respect along with converting them to Christianity. In John Woolman’s work “Some Considerations On Keeping of Negroes,” he talks about how slavery was detrimental to the slaves and the slave holder. He illustrated through his own conduct the principles of compassion and good will that formed the central message of his itinerant ministry. Which one is more compelling one might ask, to me I think that John Woolman’s work was more compelling because he received the revelation that we must start with our children first in order to abolish slavery. Mather idea of slavery was genuine, but he lacked the overall revelation of how the slaves should’ve been treated.

Jane was born into a rich family and could have very easily become a housewife with few worries. Jane’s father advised her to wear an old cloak instead, which would keep here warm without making the other girls at Sunday school feel badly about their own clothes. He added that, "it was very stupid to wear the sort of clothes that made it harder to have equality even (in church.)"
The handicaps are to people as the cage is to the bird. This simile describes how Caged Bird and Harrison Bergeron are alike. Harrison Bergeron and Caged Bird are very alike in many reasons. They both reference limitations on freedom. In Caged Bird the limitation is that the bird is in the cage and cannot fly or go wherever it pleases. In Harrison Bergeron the limitations are all the handicaps. In Harrison Bergeron there are limitations to the citizens. These are called handicaps. When you are more capable at something then other people are then you receive handicaps that limit your abilities so that everyone is equal. Some handicaps are earpieces that stop you from thinking with a ringing sound, masks for those that have superior beauty, and
as John Anderson explained: "I did not want to marry a girl belonging to my own place because I knew I could not bear to see her ill-treated." Moses Grandy agreed he wrote: "no colored man wishes to live at the house where his wife lives, for he has to endure the continual misery of seeing her flogged and abused without daring to say a word in her defense." As Henry Bibb pointed out: "If my wife must be exposed to the insults and licentious passions of wicked slave-drivers and overseers. Heaven forbids that I should be compelled to witness the sight."

I chose to read Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance, a story about four very different people living in India during a period of great civil unrest known as The State of Emergency. I found this book incredibly easy to get into because of the way Mistry writes. He seems to create the story around you, placing you in the setting as a viewer, involving you in the lives of the characters. Mistry clearly outlines the political and economic situation of India at the time, further emphasizing the plight of the main characters.
Question 1: My biggest concern for Henry is his physical health related to his recent hospitalization for COPD; coupled with, his anxiety of worrying about his wife, Ertha. In reaction to his interview, the cause of my concern is due to the changes in his life in the “last two to three years,” which includes: the declining mental state of his wife, and his lack of support. Henry and Ertha’s son died 10 years ago which was their only child, and from his interview, the only family they now have is a daughter - in - law Betty and a grandson who lives a couple hours away. Henry stated, “their life has not been the same since the death of their son. He is concerned with daily responsibilities of taking care of his wife such as bathing and preparing meals, and the

She explains, “Several times I’ve had to put stones on to boil so the neighbors wouldn’t know that we often go for many days without putting on the pot… And you’re dying of hunger… you should realize that you can’t eat pride’” (41-42). She loves the colonel, but she can not handle the sacrifice anymore. He is willing to allow them to go hunger, and wait for the pension instead of selling the rooster, and feeding them both. This drives the wife

Many scientists ponder over why humans act the way they do. Freud constructed a theory that people make decisions using three concepts: the ego, superego, and id. In Regarding Henry, the id and superego were very prominent. Henry dealt with a moral dilemma when his id constantly got in the way due to his mental drawback as a result of the incident. In the duration of the movie, his battle between id and ego are easy to identify.

Artists reimagine the human form in their artworks by using past experiences, intentions, ideas, materials, practises and applying them to the human form in an abstracted or changed reformation. World issues and interests also contribute to the recreation of the human form as they can give a traumatising or positive impression on the artist which would lead to new ideas for recreation. Art is an outlet for an artist to release his/her inner intentions and any other beliefs that cannot be seen by looking at his/her physical appearance, naturally these hidden beliefs, intentions, experiences can be easily moulded and distorted into and abstract and intricate piece of art.
