In Cumberland County alone, “13.4% of the county’s citizens live below the poverty line” (Family Promise PPT). As of 2013, there is an estimated population of 157,332 people living in Cumberland County (http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/34/34011.html). This means there are roughly 21,082 people living in poverty in the county. Several local organizations have been created to help combat this social issue, such as Spirit & Truth Ministries and Help & Hope. Although both organizations fight for a worthy cause, Spirit & Truth Ministries is a more effective program than Help & Hope because it can assist people more frequently, serve more people, and offer clients a variety of services.
Availability to provide assistance is essential when dealing with such a large population in need. Spirit & Truth Ministries operates Monday through Friday all year round (S&TM Pamphlet). Help & Hope operates Tuesday through Thursday each week (H&H Handout). Although a two-day difference appears insignificant at first glance, it can equate to a 104-day gap of availability to assist those who may depend on it. Additionally, each client can only collect food once a month with Help and & Hope (H&H). This means they would have to turn away people without proper documentation that could potentially have a great need for its services. Furthermore, those who do meet those standards are supplied with only enough food to last three to four days of the month (H&H Handout). Spirit & Truth Ministries serves anyone who comes into his or her establishment. They can provide up to five meals a week. This equates up to 36 to 48 meals a year for Help & Hope and up to 260 meals a year through Spirit and Truth
