Volunteering at StraightWay: A Christian Rehabilitation Journey

This past weekend I went and volunteered at StraightWay Training Center in Hungerford, Texas, along with some of my other batch mates. StraightWay Training Center (SWTC) is a Christian-based drug and rehabilitation center, which is the only program of its kind that provides treatment for whole families, unmarried mothers, single males, and females, as well as single parents with children. Using Christianity as a basis for their treatment center, at StraightWay the ultimate goal is to teach every attendee the principles of life which include how to deal with everyday issues and how to manage a good healthy lifestyle.This is accomplished through an intensive curriculum of spiritual, academic and vocational training over a period of …show more content…

It has shown me just how much helping others by volunteering can make a difference, in my life as well as someone else’s. Another thing that I did not like was the fact that I was not informed of where we were going as well as what it was that we would possibly be doing ahead of time. I would’ve appreciated being aware of earlier that I would’ve had to drive forty-six minutes away from Houston Baptist University to get myself to Hungerford. On the other hand, I very much enjoyed that we got to do something different and help out somewhere that I would’ve never of known even existed if it were not for Serve Houston. Volunteering that Saturday overall: helped me gain confidence in believing that I have the ability to help people, make new friends, learn new skills (such as how to use a self-wringing mop), be part of a community, and was just flat out fun and enjoyable. Personally, i have been volunteering since I was eleven and in the sixth grade, so volunteering has been apart of my life for quite some time now. Participating in Serve Houston not only made me feel good about myself and as a person, but it especially made me want to continue to volunteer. Whether it be at StraightWay Training Center, Houston Baptist University, my church, in my neighborhood, or at my local pet shelter, wherever it may be, Serve Houston made me want to continue to put time aside in my life to go
