In this chapter, Heinrichs argues that people have an issue with differentiating between arguments and fights. He cites ancient philosophers and studies about marriages to support his argument that when people resort to fighting rather than arguing to resolve issues, their outcome is inevitably doomed. Despite finding Harley’s article easier to absorb, I will be providing insight and knowledge of Scannell’s article “Dailiness” as I drew interest into his concepts and ideas behind the notion of temporality of everyday life. After Scannell’s reading, I could see myself reflecting different notions of time and ‘media time’, through his concepts of routinisation and the ‘care structures’ of dailiness I became exposed to the recurring cycle we live in.
Shlomo Yitzchaki is one of the most influential rabbis in Jewish history. Born in Troyes, France in 1040, Shlomo Yitzchaki grew up Jewish and learned from his father. When his father died in 1046, Shlomo Yitzchaki lived with his mother until 1057 when he married his wife and joined the Yeshiva of Yaakov Ben-Yakar. Since then he has become a staple in Jewish learning and Jewish history. Today we know him as Rashi. Rashi was and is very influential to Jewish scholars because of the way his commentary spread, the simplicity and variation of his commentary, and the controversy of his method that is still discussed in modern times.
Heinrichs begins by explaining the art of rhetoric and laying out the basic tools of argument. He emphasizes the importance of using the proper tense to avoid arguing the wrong issue. Furthermore, he introduces logos, ethos and pathos and shows how to “wield” each rhetorical tool. In Part 2, Heinrichs discusses common logical fallacies as well as rhetorical fouls. He remarks rhetoric’s single rule of never arguing the inarguable and demonstrates how ethos helps to know whom to trust. In Part 3, Kairos becomes an important tool for knowing the right time to persuade one’s audience. Summary – In an argument you are attempting in persuasion to change the audience’s mood, mind or their willingness to act. In a fight you are focused on beating your opponent rather than winning over the audience. It is important when in the midst of an argument you know exactly what you want by the end of it.
As Twenge continues her argument she compares it back to her own experiences which ties up this argument in the successfulness of it. She uses these comparisons to help emphasize important parts of her argument. Argumentation has followed humans from the dawn of time as a way for us to express our ideas and for our ideas to be heard. People naturally obtain the knowledge to persuade others, either backing their opinions by fact or touching others emotionally, from growing up and through their own experiences in life. Are there more than two sides to an argument? The Argument Culture was written by Deborah Tannen (Tannen, 1998). She would have us believing that there are more sides to an argument than just two. Professor Deborah Tannen is a best-selling author. She is a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University. She has written many books, articles, and educational essays. She would say that high-tech communication pulls us apart. She also states that argument culture shapes who we are. Tannen also believes that we can end the argument culture by looking at all sides of the story or situation. She seems to be very knowledgeable on the subject.

The way someone manages a difference can make conflict turn into a sphere of harm or a sphere of value. The sphere of harm is when differences are managed in destructive and damaging ways. Littlejohn states (2014) states, “Conflicts are managed so badly that damage is done to people, relationships, and, indeed, entire social worlds” (p. 188). Arguments are never won by those being the loudest or the most outrageous. When an argument turns into a hateful yelling match, the meaning is completely lost. Ideas about Culture start many heated shouting matches because of the connotation of the word. Their culture directly influences the way people choose to view the world. When cultures clash; people use argument to say or show that their culture is better. That clashing moment is when violence and social degradation can come into the lives of people belonging to these different cultures. Cultures should never been associated with hate, including argument, instead they should be accepted and appreciated. Deborah Tannen’s “The Triumph of the Yell” provides a basis for the assertion that arguments should not occur within the discussions of culture, assimilation, and the pursuit of happiness.
Throughout the semester, I have learned extensively about the process of an argument through the use of evidence, supporting details, and a clear stance on various pressing issue’s in today’s world. When I signed up for this class for the second semester, I never thought that I would be challenged to come up with compelling arguments for not only my side, but the opposing side as well. One of the most difficult things that I found was coming to a middle ground through the style of the Rogerian argument, but most of all, I learned that to opposing sides can find a solution without a fight breaking out. I learned that through one of the most basic argument forms it becomes so much more complex than simply arguing a point, you have to do the research
