Comparison of Hector and Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln and Hector both lived centuries apart, despite having many contrasts, especially in the beginning stages of their lives, their final results were that they had several astounding similarities. Hector lived as royalty whom was willing to live, fight, and die for his country. Lincoln lived as a poor, young boy until he became the leader of a country that was in desperate need of help. Even though they may have died for diverse reasons, they both died as heroes for many.

Hector knew he had to battle until he breathed his final breath as an endeavor to protect his beloved country. His death came as a consequence of fighting the Greeks’ mightiest warrior, Achilles. If he did not love his country to the magnitude he did, he would not have died fighting for it and its people. In distinction with Hector, Abraham Lincoln, son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, was born in a small log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky.
The morals and beliefs on slavery came to him from his parents who went as far as joining a Baptist congregation that separated itself from a church due to its acceptance of slavery. On November 6, 1860, Abe became the sixteenth president of the United States of America. The southern states knew of his disapproval of slavery so they seceded from the Union, in fear that they would lose their right to have slaves. After many bloody battles, the Union came out triumphant in the Civil War, a fight over slavery and an effort to make America one again. As a result of loathing towards the president and his verdict to outlaw slavery in the country, on April 14, 1861, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater. For the heroic choice to free the African Americans of the United States, Abraham Lincoln died for what he believed was right.
Hector died as a result of his love for the land and individuals of Troy. Abe Lincoln died as an outcome of his desire for freedom for all living in one unified country. One may have been born a poor child in Kentucky while the other was born to be a king, they both made their own distinct marks on history. Although some may not agree that Hector and Lincoln made the ideal choices that resulted in their deaths, many would approve when both of these men are called

His most known accomplishment was writing the emancipation proclamation. The emancipation proclamation allowed all slave to be freed in the seceding states. Abraham Lincoln’s assassination was unjust because he was killed for being an eloquent opponent of slavery, and he wanted to unite America; however, the confederate sympathizers disagreed with these actions.

Throughout the Iliad, Achilles and Hector were two of the main characters. Both Achilles and Hector defended their countries greatly. Achilles defending his country Greece and Hector defending Troy. Both were great warriors and were equal in power, but in the end Achilles would be considered the more heroic warrior. Achilles was more heroic than Hector because he was raised to be a warrior, while Hector was raised to be a king. Being brought up in different circumstances the way both men were had an impact on the way they fought. Even though Hector was indeed a great fighter he was no match to Achilles. It is said that Achilles was the greatest warrior of the Trojan War. As stated in class, the heroic code meant that honor is more important than life itself. Achilles stood by that meaning. Achilles wanted to die knowing that his name would be remembered by all.
In ancient times, due to the presence of the gods on earth with mere mortals, the concept of fate was a real and commonly known subject. And it was a justifiable reason for going to war. But Hector wasn’t the only man fighting in this war.
Hector is the True Hero of Iliad In today's society, a man's mind is his most important tool. In the past, however, a man's courage and strength is all that he had to keep him alive. In Homer's Iliad, courage is valued over honesty and even faithfulness to one's wife. If a hero is the most courageous man in the bunch, then Hector is more heroic than Achilles and King of the Myrmidons.

He felt, from the first, a presentiment of the fall of his country, but still persevered in his heroic resistance. He was a man who was willing to fight till the end. Hector’s union in marriage was with the beautiful Andromache. His traits and character as a husband and father was no less admirable than that as his as a warrior. Even though Hector was the best known, there were other principal leaders on the side of the Trojans. Besides Hector other Trojan leaders were Aeneas and Deiphobus, Glaucus and Sarpedon. If you read the Iliad you would see even in death Hector was a man who life was celebrated.

Lincoln’s mother died when he was young. Even though his family were poor, Lincoln had a strong a memorable childhood. Lincoln loved to learn and read, and soon became extremely intelligent. As he physically grew, he also grew in character and soon became a fine young man. Following a friend’s advice, Lincoln decided to run for state office. Even though he lost the election, he learned many things about the country he loved, and in 1861 Abraham Lincoln became one of the most famous presidents of the United States of America.
His election that November pushed several Southern states to secede by the time of his inauguration in March 1861, and the Civil War began a month later. President Lincoln was a intelligent man who deserved to be a historical hero. Tristan Eugene Segers risked his life by joining the army. Segers had chosen to be in the army which costed him his leg. While Segers was talking about his leg he exclaimed, “I didn’t do anything special, but if the progress I have made motivates another wounded veteran to keep going. Then that’s great”(Fiege). In Homer’s epic, the Iliad, the legendary, has no two characters that are so similar yet so different as Greek warrior, Achilles, and the Prince of Troy, Hector. Achilles is the strongest fighter in the Greek side, and Hector is the strongest Trojan. They are both put into the mold of a hero that their respective societies have put them into; however; it is evident that they are both extremely complex characters with different roles within their society and with their families, and with the gods.

This constant pressure of his grim duty can only be supported because of his titanic immortal strength. Now imagine the combined weight of two worlds, but this time held by a mortal.
