The Lanier County health department supports several of the topics pertaining to Healthy People 2020. Some topics that the health department and Healthy People 2020 have in common include, education and community-based programs, environmental health, family planning, immunization and infectious disease, sexually transmitted diseases, and maternal, infant, and child health. One topic that stands out to me is, education and community-based programs, which shares the goals and objective of this agency. In addition to collaboration with other faculty members of the health department and the community, the nurse also has to be able to handle diverse populations with a wide variety of health concerns. Patients come into the health department for numerous reasons including, immunizations, birth control, annual physicals, STD testing, prenatal case management and vision hearing and dental screenings. She would start by taking the patients’ weight and blood pressure, while asking the patient focused assessment questions. The assessment questions would focus on why the patient came into the facility and in some cases, she would even talk to the patient on a more personal level. No matter what the problem may have been, my preceptor always had the ability to make the patient comfortable. Most patients have been coming to this health department for years now, so they really respect and trust the nurses working here. The nurse presented as the health educator and patient advocate, while promoting holistic health services. No matter what services the patients’ were in need of, education was always part of the process. In many ways the nurse was doing the job of a nurse practitioner, by prescribing birth control, performing Papanicolaou (pap) smears, and ordering diagnostic tests including STD testing. The nurse also performed duties in her management position, including, ordering supplies for the facility, balancing her budget for purchases, and hiring a new part time nurse. My preceptor, Jeannie, has taught me so many different things that I will take from this experience and apply to my own future nursing
My nurse preceptor was Raji. I really enjoyed her communication skills. She made sure to be in constant communication with not only the different healthcare teams, but also the families. Keeping the patients and their families informed really helped get them involved in their care. She had a kind nature and positive attitudes. She made sure to communicate pertinent details regarding the patient's status to the patient's doctors and nurse practitioners. I was really impressed by her effort to provide complete comfort and ease to her patients. I have had previous nurses (at other hospitals) that did not necessarily pay attention to these small patient centered care elements. These were assumed to be done by the clinical partner. However,
- Nurse should place the patients well being above their personal beliefs and values. They should focus on treating the patient and making sure the patient’s needs are being met. This also means that tough decisions have to be made in the process whether it goes against what the health care team wants or it goes against what Mrs. Dawson wants.
The Healthy People 2020 (Healthy People 2020, 2014) is a nationwide program created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to achieve objectives for promoting health and preventing diseases. Faith based communities may benefit tremendously in including these objectives in program planning. The main goal is for the American people to have long, healthy lives. The Healthy People 2020 program provides measurable objectives that can be applied down to the local level such as in faith based communities. These guidelines encourage high quality of life by being healthy, disease-free, accessible healthcare, and have an environment that promotes good health and wellbeing in all age levels.
Healthy people 2020 can be defined as that arm of the government launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010 with 4 goals which include attaining high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, and improving the health of all groups of people; creating social and physical environments that promote good health for all people; and promoting the quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all stages of life (CDC, 2015).
“Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.
I have had the privilege to work with an incredible nurse leader over the past two years. This particular nurse leader shares my passion for population health and case management for the support of patients in their homes and keeping patients safe and healthy. The purpose of this interview was to obtain further knowledge about the role desired by the interviewer. By attaining information from a practicing Master’s prepared nurse, the interviewer will develop a deeper understanding of the career advancement and potential opportunities that are available in the local community.
As we begin our nursing career, it is vital to have an experienced preceptor to guide a new graduate nurse to becoming an accomplished and knowledgeable nurse. It just doesn’t take experience to make a good nurse preceptor but one that possesses qualities such as being patient, knowledgeable, give constructive feedback, and able to be a supportive role model. As stated by Korzon and Trimmer, “A supportive preceptorship relationship is a well-established primary support mechanism aimed at the successful integration of new nurse” (p.14). This statement doesn’t only apply to new nurses but nurses that are joining a new organization or a nursing specialty.
I enjoyed interacting with the patients, and my nurse. Karie, was amazing. She explained to me everything she did. The routine for each patient was very similar, and this repetition helped me anticipate what Karie needed and helped me feel fairly confident in assisting her with the new patients and their needs. On the other hand, I was extremely disappointed that I was not given the opportunity to administer an intravenous (IV) line. Karie was willing to allow me the opportunity after I watched her place an IV in three different patients, but her fourth patient was transported from a different hospital with peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line in place. It was beginning to get late in the day and the patients coming in was slowing down, so Karie told the nurses at the nursing station that I needed to practice IV’s, but no one had any to give. Although I was disappoint that the opportunity to insert an IV into a patient did not arise, I did gain much knowledge regarding the ODS unit. The qualities I think that is essential to be an excellent preceptor for someone in the nursing field is support/motivation. The preceptor must be an individual who has the senses to know when a nurse is struggling and give them the support needed to continue and push pass the obstacles they are facing because there are daily challenges that every nurse must face. The next characteristic that is important is the nurse must be knowledgeable in their area of nursing. This characteristic is important because if another is confronted with a dilemma they can be available as a resource because many nurses seek out a preceptor when they are unsure of a route to take before or after a situation has occurred. Therefore, I strive every day to be that professional, that health care provider that has a positive and long lasting impact on patient’s health and wellbeing. I always strive to be that professional that my patients and colleagues trust, respect and admire. As a registered nurse, I have accomplished that. I know it because I am asked to precept new nurses and students, because my colleagues come to me frequently to ask me questions when they are in doubt, because when there is a difficult or complicated patient, my supervisor trust me with his care, because at the end of a long busy shift with seven to eight patients under my care, my patients praise me and thank me for the great and unique care I provided them.
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
Ever since the dawn of modern medical care, nurses have played an important role. In fact, the ever-increasing demand for nurses indicates that their role is more important now than ever. And as nurses have increased in importance, their role has changed considerably. From minor considerations like their appearance, to major changes like evolving technology, nursing has made some prominent strides in the past 50 years. Luckily, I am very comfortable with patients, which made providing care very easy. I was not afraid to go into other patient’s rooms if they rang for help. I would try my best to help the patients; however, if I needed help I was not afraid to ask a fellow student or nurse on the staff. It is very important to be able to talk to patients and work as a team with fellow coworkers as it made the job easier. On the other hand, I need to go over mother and baby assessments to become more familiar with both. I was able to complete the assessments; I now need to do so in a timelier manner while ensuring I do not forget any key areas. Lastly, it is vital that I continue to go over patient teaching prior to clinical. Being comfortable with the patients made the teaching easier, though I need to become more familiar with all the material that needs to be taught.
