Transparency and leadership theories such as social identity theory are associated as they both sum up different management strategies that have been proposed to act as catapult in effective management and leadership in healthcare organizations. A good example where transparency as a leadership behavior is associated with different leadership theories is the initiative by Healthdirect (Australia) (McCormack, Dewing, & McCance, 2011). This initiative launched a transparent program aimed at training health care workers so as to ensure that besides theoretical models that have been suggested to help leaders, the concerned workers help in ensuring patients, members of community and stakeholders rate services offered by the registered healthcare centers. Relating this behavior with situational leadership theory, the theory and the behavior offers health worker with proper guidelines of evaluating group work in health care situations. When leaders become transparent in their operations, strategic decisions like the introduction of new services become efficient. Although Nembhard and Edmondson (2015) call for qualitative research that explores the possibility of having transparency affect decisions that are confidential to health care organizations, transparent health care organizations have their nursing and health care services improve as workers tend to follow leaders they believe in. Secondly, the aspect of teamwork and organizational change are strongly linked with leadership behaviors enumerated above. The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
Why now? Why are we focusing on transformational leadership? Healthcare costs are continuing to rise. Some of the critical problems and active debates prevalent in many hospital organizations include the rapidly intensifying healthcare costs, funding and reimbursement cutbacks, and concern regarding the overall quality and safety of health care. “Healthcare systems have come under pressure to improve performance and manage productivity” (Botting, 2011). To be successful in the 21st century, there is a demand on healthcare systems to have a vision and executive and clinical leadership to inspire the change process and make the difference between success and failure in change.
Leadership is described as the behavior of an individual when directing the activity of a group towards a common goal (Al- Sawai, 2013). Healthcare system involves multiple related, interconnected relations with other departments and health care professionals from various cultural backgrounds; therefore, the understanding of individuals’ behavior and group dynamics within the healthcare organization is imperative for a leader and or organization to be successful (Bukowski, 2009). Managers that hold leadership roles must adopt a certain style that can be functional for his or her initial organization to be successful. Performance improvement can be a very serious aspect of leadership engagement (Croxton, 2011). Healthcare managers need to have people from all areas involved to work effectively. Without the consistency of getting all staff and physicians involved, the organization may suffer greatly.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. A leader of a clinical medicine centre was interviewed for this report.
