A contingency plan can never be prepared soon enough. A contingency plan especially in healthcare is designed to be proactively implemented before unexpected issues occur; as soon as possible. During, the possible natural disaster the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest that a healthcare facility(HCF) must remain safe, accessible and functioning at all times to the utmost capacity to ensure that it can continue to salvage any life that comes through the door (2009). In order for a healthcare facility to run accordingly one must have a well-planned contingency already in place.

If any of these elements listed above are not met the contingency plan is now at risk of failure. The contingency plan will be constructed based on the vicinity of the healthcare facility. It should be in an area that will not easy flood and accessibility can be accomplished in time of a natural disaster. The snow storm has the potential to decrease the amount of essentials or activities of daily living. Systems with in the contingency plan will also have an estimation of supplies and drug requirements, an extra water supply, power supplies and medical gases maintained for all necessary patients. The contingency plan should be developed and evaluated for effectiveness by the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Healthcare Administrator and Clinical Nursing staff. The nursing staff should train staff on the risk management process and provide several types of risk identification actions and be able to provide feedback of each risk and be able to discuss, commit and establish if the plan is actually effective.
Gillian Scott has several things to think about before they actually occur. I think in order for the continuity of care to be given she should maybe want to see who can come in early to stay over so that they nurses can maybe rotate especially if more snow falls than what was expected causing employees to be snowed in which will cause the nurses who have already been there 12 hours to be exhausted. I think it’s better to have more nursing staff on than not enough. There should be a designated place for the nurses to rest up to be able to rotate and relieve other staff as well.
In conclusion a contingency plan is the correct way to orchestrate a team in the direction that better serves the patients and employees. Gillian has a lot to consider. She wants to get the nursing staff to and from in a safe manner without compromising the nursing staff that is already at
