In my four years at Northern Arizona University, I will begin studying Biomedical Science. My Junior year I will take the MCAT’s and apply to medical schools both in my state of Arizona and along the West coast. Once I am accepted into a medical program, I will join the United States Air Force and enter in as a officer with an O-1 rank. In the hopes to not incur several hundreds of thousands of student debt in the process of earning my MD or DO, I will apply for the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). The Air Force will cover the costs included with attending a medical school and other supplies needed for study. In addition, a monthly allowance for living expenses will be given and in turn I will serve my country for upwards of eight years. This …show more content…
The main focus of the medical school program in the Air Force is to be successful in the classes given. They offer a wide-array of educational outlets that work to broaden your scope of training and offer insight into various fields of work. However, once a year I will have a 45 day “active duty tour” where I may take officer training or an additional elective pertaining to the Air Force. This part of the program is necessary to maintain the training required of all the other troops on base. After graduating from med-school and completing my residency, I will owe the military four years in active duty and four years in the reserves. The Air Force offers residencies and fellowship programs in a wide variety of specialties, so there are many opportunities available. Should I choose the path of committing more years of service to the military, the Air Force also offers additional training in my field of choice, cardiothoracic surgery. Whether I will choose to stay in the force or open my own practice when in the reserves, is yet to be decided. My focus and determination to succeed in this field is strong because failure is not an
If I can turn back in time, I would advise my young self to join the Kaiser Permanente volunteering program sooner and to skip the small conversations in meetings. Those talks may seem necessary for the first few times, but this communication method can become meaningless since people do not interact on a personal level. Joining the program had supported me by allowing me to associate with various friends through teamwork and encouraged me to thrive beyond my comfort zone.
For undergraduate students looking to pursue a career in medicine, medical school can be a daunting financial endeavor. The Health Professions Scholarship Program is a military scholarship offered by the Army, Navy, and Air Force that covers all tuition and fees for one to four years at any accredited medical school or other qualifying professional program. The scholarship also gives the student a stipend for living expenses. In return for the aide, students incur an obligation to the military; students must serve one year of active duty and one year of Inactive Ready Reserve for each year they receive the scholarship. The student will also have to apply
Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession.
After graduation, I took a hiatus from education to re-evaluate my goals and interests. Although I thoroughly evaluated my competence and desire to attend medical school, I thought it necessary to take another year to do so; given the importance of such a decision. During which, I continued to explore my enthusiasm for medicine through shadowing and clinical volunteering opportunities. In the process, reinforcing my already present inclinations to become a physician. Furthermore, I rigorously studied for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) as it is a critical part in the admissions process.
After completing undergraduate education, medical school and graduate medical education (GME), a physician must obtain a license to practice medicine in state or jurisdiction of the United States in which they are planning to practice. Physicians need to register for the permanent license after completing a series of exams and completing a minimum number of years of graduate medical education. Add in the time and cost it takes to pay off medical school debt and a dissatisfied physician may well consider pursuing medicine a one million dollar mistake. This assumes the average $166,750.00 medical school debt takes thirty years to repay at 7.5% interest a total cost of $419,738.00 (CBS
When I started nursing school, I began to learn of the same disease processes I had heard sitting at the bedside of family members. It was then that I realized the role that education and appropriate management play in preventing complications and the difference those tools could have made for my family. As a first-generation child of a afghan immigrant and without a education, my family did not have access to those tools. Within our community, there was no emphasis on health promotion or education. However, I see this not as an obstacle but an opportunity for change: with the training from the Family Nurse Practitioner program, I can educate other families on how to live a longer and healthier life.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) is a federal government agency tasked with protecting health and providing basic human services. This department separated from the Department of Education in 1979. Below introduces this important department and explains how their services help Americans every day.
Scholarship is a concept that can mean many different things to many different people. As nursing students, scholarship is a concept that we began developing before we started our formal nursing education, will continue to hone during nursing school, and will utilize every day as professional nurses. Scholarship is not something that comes from a singular source, but rather something that is the product of many different experiences, ideas, and types of knowledge. For nurses, it is the synthesis of knowledge from liberal education, knowledge from a variety of disciplines, and the integration of ways of knowing and thinking in nursing that promote scholarship, which in turn leads to the promotion of safe, quality patient care.
This involved diagnosing and correcting issues as they occurred with the equipment provided requiring an ever expanding knowledge base and mastery in practicing that knowledge and training others to proficiency with equipment provided to them. During this time my desire to work in medicine didn’t dwindle and actually grew. At my first duty station a fellow 25U was a Registered Nurse before joining the Army to follow her husband with a career during his career. She helped me in looking at the various options in working in health care as well as different medical periodicals and journals worth reading, showing me the benefits to becoming a R.N. and career options that are possible by going R.N.; instead of going paramedic or the popular per-medicine degree that I was considering. At my second duty station was by far the most difficult assignment both in personal career development and spiritually taxing which was the most taxing for me. I served in the Oregon National Guard as a full time signal support to train up a unit for deployment to Afghanistan.

I am applying for the Army Health Services Professional Scholarship because my goal, which I’ve had since high school, is to become a physician in the Army. I see this opportunity as not only a phenomenal way to get through medical schools without accruing significant debt, but also as an opportunity to serve my country in a field that fascinates me. I initially chose to pursue medical school because I saw all the good in the world my father does as a physician. Whether he was stitching up friends after somebody caught an elbow in a backyard basketball game, watching him calmly handle an emergency situation with a crowd of concerned bystanders looking on, or evaluating me for a sickness or injury, I came to realize just how special his job was. The ability to heal someone is a powerful thing, as is the ability to know what to do in an emergency situation when someone’s life is on the line.
for close persons must not lead to a decrease in standard of living and impose poverty among them. The care provided by both informal and professional careers must be appreciated and recognized by the culture. Financial burden is a necessary prerequisite for ensuring the quality of care. The provision of quality services are directly proportional to the presence of skillful and trained workers, counselors and respite social services, including support from the society. The demand for adequate helpers and isolation from the social events enforces careers’ health as well as dignity and quality of care at risk and there will also be posed for the risk of abuse and neglect.
I realize my lifetime goal is a little farfetched, seeing as how competitive the medical field is. I’m aware many people have failed in this endeavor, and it is very rarely achieved; however, based on the community service hours and extracurricular activities I have involved myself in, I feel my chances at succeeding are just as good as any. Becoming a doctor will be stressful and time taking (after all, it is a lifetime goal), but the reward at the end will be gratifying.
“To care implies more than simply a passing interest or fancy but instead the acceptance of some form of burden” (Tronto, 1994:103). This essay will discuss if caregivers’ responsibilities and ability to care for children and families creates further inequalities. It will specifically consider working class South African families as this sector makes up the majority of South African families. This essay will consider the historical relevance in shaping families and inequality, the implications of care in contemporary living arrangements, gendered patterns and state involvement in providing care. Care is a crucial, although seriously overlooked, part of society.
