The competency, “Analyze determinants of health and disease using an ecological framework” was met through the exercise, “Health Problem Analysis Worksheet” and through reading Chapter 2 in the book Public Health: What it is and How it Works.
The purpose of the “Health Problem Analysis Worksheet” was to pick a disease, I chose diabetes, and to determine the determinants, direct contributing factors and the indirect contributing factors. Turnock (2011, p.73) defines determinants as a scientific factor that relates directly to the health problem and is one of the primary risk factors of the health problem. When creating my health problem analysis worksheet I selected my two determinants for diabetes to be: physical inactivity and dietary consumption. I chose physical inactivity because of the major benefits that physical activity has on preventing and controlling diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, physical activity can help control your blood glucose level, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels; if you don’t not already have diabetes it lowers your risk from getting diabetes; it relieves stress, strengths muscles, heart muscles, and bones; and it keeps your body and joints flexible. Next, I chose dietary consumption as another determinant for diabetes. A person’s dietary consumption plays a major role in preventing and controlling diabetes. Studies have found that a high consumption of fruits, vegetables and fish were linked to lower rates of diabetes while diets high in red meats and milk products had a higher risk for diabetes (R., Yu, et al. 2011).
The next component of the health problem analysis worksheet is the direct contributing factors. The direct contributing factors are defined by Turnock (2011, ...

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2012), the diabetes rate has more than tripled since 1980 from about 5.6 million people affected, to nearly 21 million people. And, of the 2.9 million Native Americans, approximately 16% have been afflicted with type-2 diabetes (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). These rates were more than twice the rates for the white population and strongly correlated with income level. One factor that is believed to have contributed to the high rates of non-insulin-dependent diabetes is dietary changes from traditional foods to processed foods (Reinhard et al., 2012).

The dramatic increase of gun violence in Chicago has many questioning the effectiveness of state policies and police tactics. For many Chicagoans, gun violence is a common occurrence and this would not be the first time in which a big spike has been observed. In fact, Chicago was doing well overall in each crime category until recently in 2016, when they ended the year with 762 homicides victims that were gun related. Towards the end of 2016, Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago, had a press conference with the communities at the Malcom X College. He goes into detail of how he hopes to see a sharp decline on the heavy issue of gun violence surrounding their city. It’s an issue in which the mayor says will only work through a combined effort of its

Explain the relationship between factors and affecting health and wellbeing Heath care practitioners will research the links between certain public health issues and possible causes, triggers or individuals lifestyle choices for example smoking or eating a high cholesterol diet. They do this to be able to advise individuals and prevent them from getting the illness or to find ways on how to treat the illness because they have gained a better understanding of where it comes from. For example researchers found that there was a link between elderly people being susceptible to the flu because their immune system was weaker, to prevent them from getting the virus they would have been immunised and keep away from possibly being exposed to the virus.
Through two decades ago and in recent years gun violence has increased significantly in the various parts of the United States. There are more cases of children and young adults, engaging in violence. Gun violence leads to the death of many civilians annually. Gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt to commit crimes. put children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affect communities of color. Gun violence harmed all the society and it was a nightmare which produced a culture soaked in blood.

Since Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common health challenges world-wide, I am going to further incorporate the topic in my paper. Through academic research and resources, in my first paragraph I will be providing the health promotion definition along with expressing the importance for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. My second paragraph will display the pathophysiology to help comprehend how this health challenge is present in the body. Health promotion interventions will also be incorporated with ideas and specific information to aid individuals in promoting health and preventing development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Gun violence affects things like communities, basic institutions, and the health care system. A constant support at all levels of society will be required to prosperously address this bewildering and chronic problem. Addressing gun violence will require a multidimensional approach. Gun violence is an urgent, complex and multifaceted problem.
You can’t turn on the television, or read the paper without hearing about violence in our cities and world. In a report from “Stand Up for Kids” in Chicago, they analyze the relationship between low wages, income inequality, and the epidemic of violence in Chicago’s low income neighborhoods. This report found that in 2012 there were nearly 7,700 gun-related crimes reported in the city. The city of Chicago has the third highest overall metropolitan poverty rate in the nation. Nearly one quarter of all Chicago residents live below the federal poverty threshold according to this report. ("Chicago Not Only Leads the Nation in Gun Violence Rates, but Also in Measures of Urban Poverty." Stand Up Chicago, 1 Feb. 2013. Web. 7 Oct. 2014.) Decades of research have demonstrated that there is a statistically significant link between low wages, income inequality and crime. The analysis presented in this report shows that when a city’s economic conditions improve, the violent crime rates go down.( "Chicago Not Only Leads the Nation in Gun Violence Rates, but Also in Measures of Urban Poverty." Stand Up Chicago, 1 Feb. 2013. Web. 7 Oct. 2014.) Parents and children are turning to violent acts to provide for their family needs. Policy makers and the government need to address the issues of persistent poverty and income inequality such as raising the minimum wage to a living wage and create satisfying jobs for the
In studies of epidemiology and health-related science, the overall effect of a certain risk factor or exposure on health related outcome is of interest. Once this effect has been confirmed, interest in investigating the possible biological mechanism will grow. By decomposing the overall effect into several pathways according to the involvement of different mediators of interest, path analysis and mediation analysis have been widely adapted to investigate the mechanism 1. In recent decades, causal mediation analysis, a branch of mediation analysis, uses the causal theory to explicitly define effects of interest based on counterfactual outcome model (also named potential outcome model) 2-4, expending mediation analysis to generalized

Point blank, diabetes is a serious disease and causes major effects on people’s daily lives. In a society where food comes in such abundance, people are overeating. Compared to the beginning of the twenty first century when only about five percent of the population had diabetes (Nazarko, 2009), today that number is rising and continuing to do so. This is starting to affect the health of children by being diagnosed with diabetes at a young age. When a child has diabetes it becomes very serious since children are at such a young age to deal...
