The dramatic increase of gun violence in Chicago has many questioning the effectiveness of state policies and police tactics. For many Chicagoans, gun violence is a common occurrence and this would not be the first time in which a big spike has been observed. In fact, Chicago was doing well overall in each crime category until recently in 2016, when they ended the year with 762 homicides victims that were gun related. Towards the end of 2016, Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago, had a press conference with the communities at the Malcom X College. He goes into detail of how he hopes to see a sharp decline on the heavy issue of gun violence surrounding their city. It’s an issue in which the mayor says will only work through a combined effort of its …show more content…
Emanuel says that to properly improve the quality of life in Chicago they would have to work together with the community and the police would have to adjust their training to meet this new crisis. Gun violence is an issue in which to properly eradicate would require many factors to be covered by the community and police enforcement. The mayor of Chicago has implemented more officers to watch and work with communities. He knows that this could improve the poor relationship between civilians and police. Rahm Emanuel has also increased the police force by a couple hundred which would require proper training to efficiently combat gun related homicides and crime. To better understand this problem, we would have to look at the source. Chicago has implemented many strict laws through recent years so why has it still spiraled out of control now? Well there are many licensed dealers that can sell in Illinois through loop holes. They’re referred to as “Dirty dealers”. They appear …show more content…
They have strict gun laws in which ban the purchase of guns within their city limits, ban the possession of any assault weapons, and they enforce steep fines if guns which are stolen or lost are not reported to the any police department in good time. The Chicago Police Department had seized 7,400 guns used in crimes in 2012, according to Richard Berk a criminologist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Yet Chicago is the middle of its worst period of gun violence in the past years. The implementations of laws are good but they would need to focus on enforcing them with their police force. If we are to compare Chicago’s city to New York, they had 414 homicides in 2012 which is their all-time low. If it had Chicago's murder rate, New York would have totaled more than 1,400. Both cities share the fact that they have strict gun laws and have the problem of guns coming from outside their borders. New York, however, has distinguished itself by its anti-gang program which Chicago could benefit a ton from along with proper police training. Though people could say that New York and Chicago are different cites with different factors in each play, New York's work in reducing gang violence is a game-changer. "If you remove gang-related incidents from the Chicago homicide statistics, the homicide rate involving normal citizens is much lower," says James Alan Fox, a criminologist at
In Chicago, mere months after granting concealed carry weapon permits, “homicide rates improved to a 56 year low” (Istook). Placing the power of protection into the hands of responsible citizens has taken power away from criminals. The right to own a weapon, within legal statutes, is not only a right granted by the second amendment, but also a deterrent to crime, and is legislation that liberals and conservatives alike can support. However, Party lines and media sensationalism have separated public opinion on gun control issues, and made a sensible solution to escalating crime -allowing concealed carry weapon permits – difficult to
When help presented itself, many of the people at least made an effort to change and realize that violence was not the answer. The amount of people that are shot and killed in Chicago is a surprising number. Many of the violence does not come from someone necessarily being a bad person, but someone who is unwilling to back down from any situation (Kotlowitz, 2012). In Chicago many believe that “death before dishonor” is a good motto to live life by (Kotlowitz, 2012). The funerals that people attend are just a reminder to them, that one day the way they live their lives on the street will catch up to them (Kotlowitz, 2012). The violence interrupters are working hard in Chicago to help the people in the society, but if people do not want to change it is hard to make a difference (Kotlowitz, 2012). The people in Chicago also have to put in the work to make the community a better place, so that they feel safe leaving their houses instead of feeling like “every time [they] go outside somebody is going to get killed” (Kotlowitz,
A growing number of publicized tragedies caused by gun violence have caused a great stir in the American community. Recently, President Barack Obama has made proposals to tighten the regulation of and the restrictions on the possession of weapons in America to lessen these tragedies. Should the legislative branch decide in favor of his proposals, all American citizens who do or wish to own the type of weapons in question or who use current loopholes in existing policy would be directly affected. His proposals, which are to “require background checks for all gun sales, strengthen the background check system for gun sales, pass a new, stronger ban on assault weapons, limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, finish the job of getting armor-piercing bullets off the streets, give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime, end the freeze on gun violence research, make our schools safer with new resource officers and counselors, better emergency response plans, and more nurturing school climates, [and] ensure quality coverage of mental health treatment, particularly for young people,” have been cause for a large amount of recent debate (whitehouse.gov).

Community policing in Chicago means more than officers going on foot. When it works, officers get to know their beats and the people who live on them, and residents are encouraged to report not only crime problems but also pressing community issues such as abandoned vehicles and neglected children. The police turn the complaints over to the appropriate city departments, and they expect their reports to be answered quickly and efficiently. The people of the city have to work together. Yes, Chicago has a great deal of organization and a good idea, but Chicago is still one of the cities with the highest crime rates. It may be hard because it is a big city, but if everybody would put their efforts together there would be more satisfaction in the city of Chicago.
Guns are not the trouble, people are. The United States is #1 in world gun ownership, and yet is only 28th in the world in gun murders per 100,000 people. The number of unintentional fatalities due to firearms declined by 58 percent between 1991 and 2011 Based on these facts, one can see the guns not the causes of gun violence. moreover, civilians who get permits take gun safety courses and have criminal background...

On December 14, 2012 Adam Lanza, a 20 year old with asperger’s syndrome, shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut . According to the final report by the states attorney’s office he got in the school at 9:30 AM in the morning and shot the principal and the school’s psychologist that went out to the hallway to check loud bangs they heard. He then moved on to class rooms where innocent children were learning and started shooting and by 9:40 AM, just ten minutes later, he took the lives of twenty six people, including twenty children age twelve and below and six adults, before taking his own life (State Report on Sandy Hook Elementary shooting).
In the documentary chicagoland that is what they want to put the emphasis on without giving actual fact on how the police are cracking down on gun violence. What the documentary considers as factual evidence is the simple fact that guns are all over the city and police have no idea where they are getting them from, and they have done little to take the guns off the streets or find out where they are getting the guns from so that makes them ineffective police. The truth to that is police have been hard at work trying to get guns off the street. In fact in 2012 police seized more than 7,400 guns including more than 300 assault weapons(Guns, Seized.np). This just show the effectiveness of the chicago police and how they reily are trying to make a difference in the city.
“A handgun ban is not realistically enforceable. Confiscating guns would require house-to-house searches and alienate the very individuals whose compliances is essential to the success of any regulation. If gun ownership were prohibited, organized crime would step in to provide the firearms that will continue to be procured with criminal intent” (Done Kates). Over the past decade, the media has reported an increase in the severity of violent crimes as individuals have killed and hurt many others, including kids. Since 2006 there have been over 200 mass murders in the United States. Between 2006 and 2011 alone, the FBI has counted over 172 cases of mass killings, not including those unreported from different police agencies to the FBI (“Murders
Is scary to think about family members or close friends dying innocently because they were victims of a gun shooting. The recent shooting at a 7-Eleven store, across from Cerritos College, has many people talking about gun violence. In America, on of the biggest issue is gun violence. Throughout the years, the gun violence in America has been increasing. Most of the time, the shootings occur at schools, stores and at public places where lots of innocent people get injured or dies. When a shooting happens, the news reporter, social media or at the front page of a newspaper talks about the problems with guns. There are two sides in this gun debate, one is making more laws and the other is more guns. Individuals must consider which side of the debate offers the greatest gain for the least cost. Looking back to laws, making more laws will not work because individuals will break the rules. Many will not stop until they own a gun, legally or illegally. Even though, some individuals do not favor the right to own a gun, owning a gun will determine the live or death of an individual by making sure the individual is safe. Having the right to own guns might help save more people’s lives because a gun will be a really good source of protection. In terms of the gun debate in America, individuals should prioritize personal liberty because having more guns people might feel more safe and protected.
Detroit and Chicago have some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the United States. Yet both of these cities have high crime and homicide rates. Criminals benefit from overly stringent gun control laws, because when the citizens are not armed, committing crimes without immediate punishment becomes significantly easier.
Illinois (specifically Chicago) is notorious for crime. The state is ranked number twelve out of fifty-one (the fifty-states and District of Columbia) as of 2008 for violent crimes and ranked number five out of fifty-one in armed robberies by the FBI (United States Dept. of Justice 3). In turn, the District of Columbia reported a forty percent increase in violent crimes for the year 2012 (Noble). Gun rights activists view concealed carry licenses as a crime deterrent based on the reasoning that criminals will not attack someone who may be armed (Concealed Guns 2). The Chicago Gazette published “Gun rights groups challenged the [Illinois] law banning concealed weapons” in 2009. Acitivist with funding fromthe National Rifle Association sued on behalf of an Illinois woman who had been attacked while volun...
There can be a negative side to giving guns to an area already filled with gun violence. If the guns are legal then the gangs can also get easier access to them. It would be possible that the gun violence will go up or it might have the opposite reaction. What I think is that we can use reverse psychology in this case. My cousin, who is professor with a PhD, used to tell me that when you tell a kid to
You can’t turn on the television, or read the paper without hearing about violence in our cities and world. In a report from “Stand Up for Kids” in Chicago, they analyze the relationship between low wages, income inequality, and the epidemic of violence in Chicago’s low income neighborhoods. This report found that in 2012 there were nearly 7,700 gun-related crimes reported in the city. The city of Chicago has the third highest overall metropolitan poverty rate in the nation. Nearly one quarter of all Chicago residents live below the federal poverty threshold according to this report. ("Chicago Not Only Leads the Nation in Gun Violence Rates, but Also in Measures of Urban Poverty." Stand Up Chicago, 1 Feb. 2013. Web. 7 Oct. 2014.) Decades of research have demonstrated that there is a statistically significant link between low wages, income inequality and crime. The analysis presented in this report shows that when a city’s economic conditions improve, the violent crime rates go down.( "Chicago Not Only Leads the Nation in Gun Violence Rates, but Also in Measures of Urban Poverty." Stand Up Chicago, 1 Feb. 2013. Web. 7 Oct. 2014.) Parents and children are turning to violent acts to provide for their family needs. Policy makers and the government need to address the issues of persistent poverty and income inequality such as raising the minimum wage to a living wage and create satisfying jobs for the
