Today marks the date of July 30th, 2015. We have Apple Watches, Google Glasses, High Definition TV’s, Gluten-Free food, and even dairy-free ice cream (Larsen). All of these items listed have helped us advance and improve life, here, in America. But, one thing that still holds us back from being healthy individuals is, the fast food industry. The main concern when eating a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder should be the health risks associated with it. It was “found that consumption of fast food more frequently than once a week increased the risk of being obese by 129 %” (Jaworowska et al. [Page 312]). Obesity has no one cause there is a mix of many different factors like behavior, genes and outside factors ("Division of Nutrition, Physical"). Behaviors affect your “diet patterns”, how much you exercise or how inactive you are ("Division of Nutrition, Physical"). Outside factors include our environment which can directly affect how much/little exercise is done. Another major outside factor is education, which can lead to poverty. But, there are many other smaller health effects that having going to fast food restaurants have. Many times drinks, usually sodas, are filled with a lot of carbohydrates and empty calories (Pietrangelo). When your digestive system breaks down these carbohydrates they break off into small pieces of glucose which is then release into your blood stream (Pietrangelo). In response, insulin is released to lower your blood sugar. This is a normal process when eating carbohydrates. However, many “frequent spikes” can lead to type 2 diabetes (Pietrangelo). There was a study completed that showed that people who eat fast foods can be “linked to depression” (Pietrangelo). 51% of people who do consume fast food items have a higher chance to develop depression compared to “people who eat little to no fast food”

People tend to believe our obesity epidemic is due to our high-calorie fast food restaurants. They are quick to blame others for their own mistakes and their willingness to change their eating habits. Fast food restaurants are not to blame for our obesity problem in our society but as a consumer, we are making that ultimate choice. We need to stop and think about what we are putting in our bodies and what they are doing to us. Yes, it’s true, it’s easier to find a McDonalds than a fruit or vegetable stand, but why not choose the salad with half the dressing at McDonalds

However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension”
There are many causes for obesity each obese person can have a different one, but in general obesity is caused by an individual consuming more calories than the body can expend or actually needs. Obesity is defined as an abnormal increased of fat in the subcutaneous connective tissue. This means that there are many fat cells under the skin. Eating a lot of food than the body can use for energy makes this deposition.(5) The main explanation for this are eating too much or having a diet high in fat and calories and having lack of exercise or activity. Carrie Fredericks in her book “Obesity” he mention some facts about the causes of obesity and he said that people who get 20 to 30 minutes of exercise most days are less likely to be obese(31). So exercise is one of the factors that prevent obesity. Most dietary research suggests that people should limit the amount of fatty foods they consume to less than 30 percent of their daily energy consumption.
Cholesterol and salt are known to set off blood pressure, stroke and heart diseases in a chain. Excessive salts can affect functioning of kidneys. Excess fats and oils along with spices added in these foods act as an irritant to gastric mucosa leading to excess secretion of hydrochloric acid, landing in gastritis. Poor concentration is another result of fast food habit known to affect in immediate and medium term periods. When a sumptuous junk meal rich in oil is taken, there is a feeling of drowsiness and failure to concentrate. A small study in 12 healthy men reported changes in the ability of skeletal muscle to process glucose after only five days on a diet rich in fatty processed foods. The researchers concluded that junk foods may lead to insulin resistance in the long term. This implies that fast food consumption may promote serious diseases in the body in long term such as diabetes as a result of insulin resistance, gastritis, lack of concentration. During my time at Lake Placid and even now, I find myself falling into these bad habits. The problem with fast food is the amount of calories in every meal. According to the study in the same New York Times article, “The study found that most teenagers underestimated the number of calories they were consuming, some by up to 466 calories.’. But, if someone asked you how many calories are in a single McDonalds Big Mac, what would you guess? 150 calories? 200? 300? No, the answer is 563 per Big Mac, that is not even including fries and a drink. Therefore, a full meal at a fast food establishment, like McDonalds, contains around 1,313 calories. The suggested amount of calories for an active teenage boy is anywhere from 2,600-3,200 calories a day. As the fast food industry continues to grow throughout not only the United States but the whole world, marketing companies are always looking for ways to broaden the group of people that are interested in buying their product over another company’s. As a marketer for a fast food company it is essential to have a group of people that you can rely on to always buy the company’s product, to many fast food companies they found this group of people to be adolescents and children. Marketing groups specifically market their products to entice this group of people to lure them in. Food is an object that is needed for the survival of a human, but the type of food that humans chose to eat is also not always the best. Because fast food is so cheap and easily accessible just about everywhere you turn your head, many people resort to eating it even though it is very unhealthy. With these factors present, many adults have exposed their children to fast food at a young age, these parents do not always think about the long term effects of feeding their children fast food because they are so caught up in the moment of feeding their kids right then and there; they do not think about the health risks that can occur later as a result from eating fast food now.
Some effects include, childhood obesity, cancer, diabetes type two, heart disease, binge eating, pot belly, or shortness of breath. Childhood obesity is becoming more common because of fast food advertisements. According to an interview with Dr. Rosen, a hematology/oncology specialist, he stated,”Diabetes, HTN (hypertension), heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and cancer.” This shows, some of the diseases of childhood obesity will cause. Moreover, according to CBS news,” Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity,” (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fast-food- linked-to-child-obesity/ 1). This is talking about how fast food is contributing to children becoming obese and thus experiencing the effects of obesity. Also, according to healthyeating.sfgate, they mentioned that in a 2004 study called “the lancet” if the average person eats fast food two or more times a week, it increases the chance of getting type two diabetes and a ton of weight gain. This shows some of the effects of fast food advertisements, along with an experiment to back it up. Since all of this is happening the obesity rates are going up drastically. Majority of the students in our study are consuming fast food more than recommended by nutritionist: at least once a month (Weil, 2014). Based on the comments made by respondents, the proliferation of fast food outlets has provided much convenience for students especially those with time constraints in university, whereby they are becoming more reliant on these quick-serving foods compared to a proper healthy meal. In addition, as a student ourselves with tight monthly budgets, we tend to find something that is worth it, in this case the price of fast foods compliments the delicious taste.
“Grab and Go!” shimmer windows of many fast food restaurants in the new XXI century. “It is really comfortable and it saves time”, my old neighbor whispers to me as a secret. “Today is my birthday! Let’s go to McDonalds and order cheese hamburgers and fries!” – My niece is screaming with delight in her face. Finally, really big hamburger appears in TV screen during commercial and looking juicy with fresh green salads forcing every one of us to feel hungry. However, fast food restaurants serve not only food lacking of vitamins and nonnutritive value, but also are responsible for endangered species, biodiversity reduction, worsening human’s health, and risk to run out of natural food and medicine sources that can lead to human’s extinction. One of the effects is that junk food contains a high amount of unhealthy ingredients. The sugar and oil in junk food gives the body extra calories that the body doesn’t need which will later be unhealthy fats. Why try cooking when you can get food at a much faster rate? To most people, fast food is the answer to all of our problems. It is good in every possible way, or is it?
